1st Step In How To Recover Data From Clicking Hard Drive AKA The Click of Death

Ғылым және технология

This video is to educate you on the most important part of the process of recovering data from a clicking hard drive - which is diagnosing the problem. It includes facts about clicking drives and how to avoid making your situation worse. One thing to understand is there is a point where running the drive another minute could cause your data to become unrecoverable.
This video should be able to help you make educated decisions during the recovery process, and ultimately help you recover your files safely.
First of all when your hard drive is clicking, it means the read/write heads are not getting the signals they need to know where to go to start reading the data. The first area the heads visit is the Service Area where all the information is stored pertaining to the functionality, identification, repairs, and stability of the drive.
When you hear the click that is the head stack returning back to it's parking position because it cannot find the Service Area. When it slams back into its parking position it clicks. This can and will wear out the heads and cause further issues if left in this state and continued to be powered on.
Hard drive clicking? Have you heard of the click of death? Well don't believe everything you hear, your drive isn't necessarily dead, and your data can still be recovered in most cases.
Most of the time when you hear a hard drive clicking noise it's not going to need a clean room either. Usually in the cases where the computer or external drive has been dropped, is when your drive will need to make a pit stop FIRST in a clean room.
Of course read/write heads go bad from time to time, and you will need a very expensive piece of equipment in order to properly and safely diagnose the cause of your hard drive's clicking.
If your drive clicks and stays spinning there is a really good chance a professional with the right equipment and experience will be able to recover your files.
When it comes to clicking hard drives it is not recommended for any one other than data recovery professionals to work on recovering them. This is due to the fact that most of the time there is a serious issue that needs to be fixed (temporarily repaired) for recovery purposes, and it requires some expensive technology and major experience.
Of course not every situation is the same so while one person might get lucky trying an online "fix", usually the longer the drive spins and stays on the worse the clicking will get and ultimately the head stack will get worn out and crash into the platters.

    12 minutes just to tell people, don't fix it yourself but take it to a shop. But most people want to learn how to fix it themselves like your title suggested. They don't want to spend lots of money to pay you to do it when it could be something they can learn to do themselves to save time and money especially when they just want the opportunity to get their files off the disk.

    Professionals don't diagnose drives they don't recover. There isn't one data recovery company that will JUST diagnose your drive and tell you what exactly is wrong with it, without having an agreement to recover it. And besides how will you diagnose this clicking drive? What will you use, and what are you expecting from that whatever? If we need specialized technology and major knowledge and experience to know why a drive is clicking, and then fix it, why do you think it will take you any less, like watching a KZread video and then being able to do it? Its sort of irrational to even consider that, but hey what do I know. And by the way, the whole definition and concept of "professional" is someone who gets paid for their skill or knowledge. Professionals get paid for what they do, but you say that as if its a bad word. You are guessing I am guessing we all are guessing what a drive is clicking for (diagnostics) without special technology. Please stop and think for a second before you join the circus with their unrealsitic epxectations ideas and then because they get their feelings hurt from a youtube video speaking the truth about something wayyyyyyy above their paygrade they hit the dislike button. its comical actually. Also quit being cheap :) you have no problem paying other "professionals" for their services why is a data recovery expert any different. You don't understand why a drive clicks you don't understand how to get the data. Its very simple. Good luck tho

    Hi, I just noticed some clicking on my 4tb seagate external memory, but it's a more quite clicking, like you have to get really close so it can be heard. Btw, it was working perfectly 2 days ago. Normally, when it gets connected to the power source and to the USB port of the console, it automatically starts running and the blue light starts blinking, but this time that wasn't the case. If you guys can help in anything I'll appreciate it immensely.

    Yesterday, I somehow noticed my backup external drive doing the normal head movement playing in slight higher (But not too much) volume for a few times. It views data and files just fine though and it turns back to normal volume sound after a couple minutes and back to less noticeably to hear like what should happen usually. I wonder why that happens? The health of the drive still said "Good" and I didn't see anything wrong in the values. Why do hard drives sometimes trick you like that or something? Position is on top of my tower desktop case.

  • @Sertdatarecovery

    @Sertdatarecovery

    6 жыл бұрын

    Well anything that you would have available to you for drive health reporting would relate to the SMART data. This data is incomplete and only shows on a very basic level what is going on with the drive. If you have your drive almost full, it will make your drive work harder and hence may make it perform a bit louder at times. Also it could be sign your drive is beginning to fail. Healthy drives shouldn't make much more than a slight whirring noise.

    So I have a question. When the stuck head is moved off the platter and back to it's parked position, what is the action of the arm? Is the arm spring loaded? Does it want to stay in the parked position or does it freely float or move? The reason I ask is because I had an issue with my disk and the head was in the parked position but it appeared to be stuck or frozen. I gently checked for play with a screwdriver. It was stuck pretty good. I than applied pressure to the arm and it broke free but it now freely moves. It's not spring loaded. Non of the videos show how the action of the arm should be while parked. Thanks.

  • @Sertdatarecovery

    @Sertdatarecovery

    it depends on where the parking is. However there is a magnet that is pulling pushing the actuator arm which can cause it to jump or fly around. but these are only things one might come to learn as every single drive is different.

    Well Toprak we look at it from a little different perspective. We look at reliability of a drive, from it's ability to be recovered when there are problems. All drives fail, the same as all tires will wear out on a car eventually. The way a user handles it has a huge impact on it. We always suggest Western Digital as they are the most resilient to damage. Samsungs are among the most favorite of some engineers.

    +Hind Al-Ghamdi First, one of the contributing factors to your issue is the drive is almost full. We suggest never running a drive with more than 80% capacity used. You are asking for trouble after that point. Second, your drive probably has a firmware issue that can only be temporarily fixed to recover the data by a company that has the machine required to do this. There is only one like it in the world, developed by the leaders in data recovery technology. Same technology that all the advanced data recovery companies use. You will end up needing to send it to a company like that, like us, in order to get your files off the drive. Every time it's plugged in and it clicks the heads are becoming weaker and will fail causing the recovery to be more expensive. The click is the head stack slamming back into its parking place. If you stop, there is a high probability your data will be 100% recoverable. Any further use of the drive, while not actually imaging or recovering the files will make the percentage worsen.

The thing also, is you don't know for sure it's even required to get access to the data. It's not ALWAYS a heads problem with a clicking drive. My answer to you would be to send it to a company who can correctly diagnose it, and then has the experience and equipment to get your files back for you.

    Scare tactics from a company who wants to jack up their revenue. Should a complete novice attempt to recover critical data via repair by themselves? Of course not. But anyone with some basic electronics know how can solve a number of common drive problems on their own with a few basic tools. Why do you not mention checking for bad caps, diodes, or resistors on the pcb? Why do you not mention cleaning contacts or even inspecting the PCB for damage? Why do you not recommend ensuring the power supplied to the drive is sufficient to prevent repeat resetting? Dozens of troubleshooting tips for this kind of problem are widely available and accepted as safe preliminary steps before sending the disk for professional recovery.

    because that's not usually the case or I would have, you don't need to guess with data that is important to you because guessing can ruin it. The statistics for the things you described being the culprit are extremely low. And don't forget how many drive are not recoverable because of people with no knowledge except watching youtube videos tried to do something they were clueless about. You don't have to be good at everything just pick one thing and excel in that.

    +Maurin Bieler yes some drives read/write heads park in the middle and some park on the outside on a ramp. The thing to remember is that there are many reasons why a drive will click that do not require it to be opened in order to fix it to recover data. However, you will need very expensive equipment in order to perform recovery in those instances. Opening the drive in these cases brings unnecessary risks to the health of the drive and can prevent recovery in some situations.

    The first question to ask is does the data matter, or can you lose it? The next thing to do is avoid powering it on. The clicking can be caused by a few different issues, a couple of them can get worse and cause the data to be unrecoverable. (see here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gpys1NGonLqtYps.html ) Clicking hard drives normally require expert help to get the data off. The drive needs to be properly diagnosed to determine why it is clicking, and the best course of action required to solve it long enough to get the data off.

    +Ruidwaun ElMahgiub you need to be able to determine for sure what the problem is. We use very expensive data recovery diagnostics equipment to do this. If you do not have this equipment you will be guessing and one wrong guess can cost you your data. For example, even if you properly did a head swap, and the drive still doesn't work because the problem was not the heads, but it was the firmware. You would not be able to solve it, in addition to incorporating extremely high risk that was unecessary in changing the heads. hope this helps a little

    my hard drive is really strange. It doesn't show on mac, but does show in windows( And makes the pc slow), and I can see all the data in it,( Some of the data, probably small sized data"till 50 mega bites" can actually be transferred, however the large data just don't seem to have that opportunity to be transferred). Some one help me? I couldn't find it in any forum on the internet, because mine doesn't have the whole typical symptoms? And important symptom, the clicking sound is not continuous but rather frequent And it doesn't sound bad,( I know the bad sound), And can disappear when holding it in some manner

    Well that's definitely not normal. Drives can click and still work when they are failing however I would not trust the drive at all. Are you running a RAID? What type of drives they are? Type of clicking sounds (loud, faint, how may seconds apart, duration)? Have been making the sound since the beginning? Is the clicking definitely your hard drive, or could it be the CD player? I would keep all your data backed up if it is the drives.

I wrapped the hdd in a plastic bag put it in the freezer for half an hour, then quickly took it out of the bag connected it to the pc via a cable. it worked enough for me to get the files off. then it went back to no go.. It's not bollocks, the theory behind it is, computers work much better in a freezing environment and no click noise, hot is no good. So soon as it warmed up it would not read click noise. I tried this some worked but not slim/pocket hdd's. If you don't believe it i don't blame you, this is not 'How to make crispy bacon in a microwave using tin foil'. I hate misinformation and the people who spread it, it pisses me off. So if ever you have a situation that you might wanna try this way, let me know if it worked for you. Mark thank you for your honesty here. The most important process of data recovery is the diagnostics phase. Anything that will cause clicking will require advanced data recovery hard drive technology that will allow the service area to be manipulated, or the ability to change the heads if that is the problem. There is no way for you to know what is causing the clicking without the technology.

    One should never turn on a drive that has been dropped if the data is critical. The heads may have made contact with the platter, or a few other things may have happened. You wouldn't necessarily know what to look for unless you have experience working with these types of situations. Performing any more procedures besides closing the drive up and sending it to a professional will likely cause the data to be unrecoverable if it's not already.

  • @Sertdatarecovery

    @Sertdatarecovery

    7 жыл бұрын

    The reason why your drive is clicking should be explained in the video. There is no easy fix to a dropped drive that has been damaged. The heads probably made contact with the platters, or came out of alignment. Changing the heads may be necessary but it may not even matter. You need to know what to look for on the platters and the heads to see if there is truly damage. If the drive was on, I guarantee there is damage to the platters.

Well we are actually trying to educate you and everyone else like you and actually get to you before you destroy any hope for recovery, and then try to send a recovery company the drive after you have completely man handled it o opened it to where the drive itself is crying and asking you to stop with its last dying breath lol

    You clearly can't identify a tip when 10 are given to you - seemed fair for me to say.

    my drive started clicking and i immediately put in a spare. Never tried recovering the data yet. Not too optomistic.

    if you cannot determine why it is clicking there is very little chance to recover the drive. No one should be optimistic about self attempts at data recovery. That would be like going into the garage and pulling your car engine out without ever having done it before. :)
