    I would have added a little bit more from Seo Taiji and Boys. This was the most pure K Pop era. You can see the perfect mix between US and Korean culture in each song. Nowadays I feel like it's more commercial than ever.

    You can definitely hear the influence of 1990's American Hip Hop and R&B (when Western music was arguably much better than it is today!). My favorite 1st Gen group is Shinhwa, and my favorite song of theirs is "Be My Love." Thank you so much for this compilation! I actually found some more songs to add to my playlist ❤️

    sorry but not can be heard the influence of American r&b that much, hip hop yea thou. I can hear mostly the influence of J-pop and visual kei J-rock, which is understandable since Japanese pop and rock music did much influence at beginning of k-pop. And just to note American pop music got influenced at that time by K-pop, like Britney's Oops...I did it again using song Invitation by Uhm Jung Hwa. etc.

    @@SamuraiSx19 there was definitely some r&b influence, new jack swing which is a fusion of r&b and hip-hop was very popular in kpop in the 90s (think H.O.T)

    This is so nostalgic for me; I remember downloading artists like BoA, M.I.L.K and Shinhwa (also Japanese artists like Utada Hikaru, KAT-TUN and Arashi) on Napster/LimeWire/Kazaa/Morpheus, and then burning and then swapping mix cds with my cousins. As an Asian teenager in Australia in the early Noughties, it was the first glimpse I had into pan-Asian identity which 3rd-Gen K-Pop has really fostered. Tbh, I didn't really know what these artists even looked like, it wasn't until 2nd-Gen (and when I fell in love with T.O.P's face lol) where I felt a sense of fandom.

    The spotify list is a great start for those who want to delve into the early history of K-Pop post Seo Taiji & Boys. However, their list is just not complete without some major K-Pop singers/groups that were omitted. Solid (솔리드) were the most successful gyopo (Koreans living abroad) group. Their impact in Kpop opened the doors for not only other gyopos such as Brian Joo of Fly To The Sky, but other asians abroad to join kpop groups (Lisa from BlackPink, Nichkhun from 2pm, both being of Thai descent) as well. The most notable and controversial figure is solo artist Yoo Seung Jun. Debuting in 1997, this guy was a triple threat: he can sing, rap, and dance. The total package. He was reaching superstardom status, being a huge sensation all over Asia. Sadly, that all came crashing down when he avoided mandatory military service for male Korean citizens and became a US Citizen (plenty of online articles and youtube videos on that). On a side note, I honestly thought the group S#arp would be one of the GOATs. Being a mixed male/female group in an era of mainly male only and female only groups, they certainly had the talent to stand out from the rest of the pack. But since their debut in 1998, the group went through a number of personnel changes as well as the bullying scandal between co-lead singers Seo Ji-young (the bully) and Lee Ji-hye (the victim). Unfortunately, they never reached their true potential as they disbanded in 2002. To the OP, great job of putting together this video. A lot of goodies while walking down memory lane...

    Wow and for 1st gen girl groups you are looking at 1997 to December 31 2006 end first gen January 1 2007-December 31 2011 second-generation Korean pop music girl groups. If you are looking for a transition period magazines Your Best Bets are the Korean Air and Asiana in flight magazines.

  • @EpicThe112
    @EpicThe112 Жыл бұрын

    This period went from 1997-December 31 2006. Easy evidence for this is that your Korean Air & Asiana Airlines Magazine will have an SM Entertainment SES Eugene Ad or CSJH Lina ad. My Korean Air Beyond December 2006 edition had both SES Eugene and CSJH Lina. The transition from Gen 1 girl groups to Gen 2 Girl Groups are 2007 can explain why January 2007 Beyond magazine has an Article about SNSD and Kara.

    Bru. Answer the Phone is even famous in the Philippines back then. I can remember hearing it on the radio before. But I can't remember in detail because I was too young back then, but I like that song. I don't know the language back then and thought it was french or German. Again, I can't remember much.

    Im glad i got to grow up during Gen1 kpop. H.O.T, S.E.S, DJ Doc, Kim Gun Mo, Fink.L, S#arp, Turbo, and im sure many others. Kpop back then just hit different. Don't get it twisted, I really enjoy these new Gen Kpop artists, just something different growing up during those years and listening and being there. ill never forgot my home town Dongduchon and ICS. Thank you for this compilation, bringing back groups i had forgotten about! Thank you!
