Boredom feels like a failure because we know their childhood is lacking from how ours were. No kids to play with outside anymore. We're all disconnected from our immediate community now, working all the time. It's hard to connect with neighbors, and families are more spread apart. We have lost our village.

100%- I keep hearing 'it takes a village' but when I look around, I see no village. Everyone is busy, overworked, and wrapped up into their own households

“We’re accustomed to seeing our children’s boredom as a personal failure” - wow, just wow. That statement really sums up why we feel so pressured and driven to remove any traces of “boredom” from our children’s lives. Thank you for your work in broadcasting this message to the world. Love your podcast! You are an inspiration

That gut wrenching sadness of knowing that they can't just go play outside with neighbors the way we did.

This explains so well why gifted children often become perfectionists/anxiety driven in classroom settings! There are some great resources about this topic at the Davidson Institute for Talented Development site.

I am going to have to check out Kim's book!! Also, if you're interested in learning more about marketing to kids you should check out Susan Linn's book "Consuming Kids". There's also a documentary called "Consuming Kids: The Commercialization of Childhood". Both are really good!
