1GB Fiber Internet Service AT&T | What to Expect

Ғылым және технология

I did this video to give you a quick walk through of the components that came along with the 1GB Fiber Internet Service from AT&T. I didn't realize what all went into it until the installer showed up.

The box on the outside is called the ONT. We use inside ones now that plug into the wall normally. They're about 5x3 inches. On the modem you always want Power/ BB1/ service to be green. Wifi will flash if you have an active wifi connection and ethernet will flash if you have an active connection.

ONT is the final termination. Outside box is a Slack NID (Network Interface Device). Connect Optical drop to Inside Optical fiber via SC connectors. Sometimes home owner requests drop wire taken all the way to ONT, bypassing need for slack NID. All Slack NID does is give repairman an access for possible future repair call

The AT&T contractor installed our 1G fiber yesterday. He was quick and knowledgable. The only problem he ran into is that our house is up on a slight rise which means he had to request a 24 foot boom truck to get him high enough up the utility pole to make the connection there. After that, it was just a matter of running the OFS optical cable to the house, installing the box next to our existing AT&T phone / Internet box, then pulling the fiber through a new hole he drilled into our brick siding. He then switched our old AT&T router [an Ethernet Terminal Adapter, *not* a modem] for the fiber optic Gigabit router. One interesting thing to note is the new router has only 3 available Ethernet ports while the old one had 4. I will run a CAT-6E cable from the Raspberry Pi 4B that I am writing this note on when I get the time to drop by Fry's or MicroCenter to pick one up. Right now my Raspberry Pi's WiFi continues to work well. Port #2 is for our VOIP alarm connection by OOMA. Port #3 is hard-wired with one of my CAT-5 jumpers (until I pick up a CAT-6E version). I ran Speedtest before and after the 1G install: AT&T 24: *Ping* 27ms | *Download* 24.54Mbps | *Upload* 4.57Mbps 1G fiber: *Ping* 2ms | *Download* 72.6Mbps | *Upload* 57.27Mbps

They came out a few days later and buried it using a trenching machine. You had to look hard to find the "trench" that it was buried in. They actually did a good job. Only negative was the orange spray paint they put on the grass to show the crew the intended path for the line.

There is no way for me to not have their router in the loop but my Netgear Nighthawk router is better and more reliable than just theirs alone. I know this was more than you asked for but I hope this will help you.

Hi, B-Rob, I hope it's not too late for me to ask you something about this video, so I'm trying any way . . . the thing is, do you know if an installation like yours can qualify as a "Self Installation" when I show interest to get it from AT&T?; I mean, if I I wanted to save some money by making the installation of that system by myself, what would AT&T let me do?; Do they install the grey box outside the house or let me install it?; from what point of the whole thing would my intervention start? . . . Greetings . . .Thanks a lot! (Very helpful video, by the way)

Hi Benjamin. The installation was free for me so I didn't even consider asking if I could do it myself. I would think that they would not let you unless you were a contractor who performs the installations for them. I actually had an AT&T company person come out but I have heard that sometimes they contract out this work. Maybe you can work that angle. They did install the grey box outside the house for me. Let me know if you have any other questions. I want to be helpful. Also sorry about answering so late. I've been really busy with some other stuff and took me a while to answer. I should be more prompt next time. Thanks for watching and asking questions.

Hope you got it now. Sometimes att doesn’t have a say in it. Some cities give att a hard time over digging permits. Possibly because of kickback from cable companies, let’s not speculate. Also, att does some budgets over a period of years. So they’ll allot a few million for a period of say 2-3 years for fiber installation in neighborhoods. They pick the cities and neighborhoods. If some cities (municipalities) give them trouble they’ll get bypassed and they’ll have to wait for the next budget.

Good video. Told me exactly what I wanted to know. I have one question though. The conduit has been ran in my neighborhood, the boxes are there but there is no cable inside the boxes yet, only the orange conduit. Reason I say this is because I got an email it was now available in my neighborhood. Naturally I went ahead and ordered (tv and internet) immediately (I've been stuck with 6meg dsl and satellite tv for the last 9 years with no other options) and was given an install date of March 6th. I later received a text message that they would be coming out on March 3rd to bury a cable at my location. I'm thinking the one in the yard. Should I be concerned they've jumped the gun on taking orders in my area? I had previously received an email saying it was available weeks ago which I knew wasn't true as they were in the process of installing the conduit and boxes. I promptly received another email stating that was incorrect. Sorry for the long comment but I'm curious as to what might happen this week. Thanks again for the video!

Thanks for the positive feedback! So your situation is about like mine was. They actually came out to do the install a couple weeks before and realized that the contractors didn't bring the cable to my yard. He pulled it from the node (my word not his) which is one lot over and across through all the orange conduit and to the more convenient hand hole (I have 2 in my yard). Anyway the cable is ran to the house and I await install on Monday. To say I'm excited would be a massive understatement. From 6meg dsl to gigabit! Whew boy this will be interesting! Your Broadband 2 light will never light up. Broadband 2 is for copper service. If the main node is too far away from the house (speaking about copper service vs. your fiber connection), they bring the service in on 2 pairs of copper wires rather than just one (on VDSL circuits). On fiber, the broadband light merely shows that your RG is connected to the ONT and is transmitting data. If the main fiber line gets cut, you'll still have a broadband light (only on broadband 1), but the service light will be red because there's no data passing between the ONT and the node.

Wanted to touch back in. Our service has been great but be warned if you pair this with uverse tv you will have lag if you play online video games. Probably fine for Warcraft but not for twitch shooters such as call of duty, quake etc for sure. Reason being uverse tv takes priority in the packet queue so your gaming packets get delayed if tv is being watched. 1 receiver on might be ok but from my troubleshooting more than that effects it. I have the Pace 5268ac gateway. others may have qos built in but this pace is restricted a lot and no qos I can see so you can't prioritise packets. Yes you can run your own router with qos but the iptv (uverse) has to go through the gateway so it wouldn't help. I game a lot on cod so debating switching to directv to address the issue. My understanding is even if under contract they'll let you switch with no penalty since they're pushing ppl toward dtv anyway. I had to figure this issue out my self. If you have voip that takes priority over tv while on calls.

  • @KevAdams1989

    @KevAdams1989

    7 жыл бұрын

Regardless of the priority of the packets, your bandwidth is so high, you shouldn't see lag. Gigapower allows 6 streams into your home for the tv service. Those 6 streams will never cause congestion on your connection. Go ahead and turn on all your tv's and check your ping before and after, you shouldn't see much of a difference, if any. I will say that, from watching the video, the ping is not where it should be for fiber, each time I test a new fiber install it consistently shows 3 or 4ms, it certainly shouldn't be jumping all over like that. You likely have a defective gateway or ONT. I suppose it's possible your light level is bad on your fiber but the ONT shouldn't go online if the light is low. It's possible that your cat5e cable is pinched or poorly connected, or picking up interference from a magnetic field nearby.

Xbox One's speed test is faulty. It won't give you a consistent result. The only worthwhile speed test is Ookla's speedtest.net. That being said, an older iPad has a 2.4GHz adapter built in. 2.4GHz will normally only get speeds of around 75-100Mbps at best. 5GHz devices aren't all equal either. My iPhone 6 for example, can get around 300Mbps on wifi on a Gigabit account, while my iPhone 8 plus normally hits speeds of around 550.

  • @davidg4512

I think you mean 1Gb and not 1GB. Internet is measured in gigabits and not gigabytes. You are getting 120MB with a 1 Gb connection (125 megabits without any kind of overhead, but you will generally never get that and your speed will hover between 110 to 120).

Thank you for the comment. Technically you are correct. But....AT&T does advertise it this way in some ads. Also it is a bigger deal when you are talking about data storage and not so much internet..right now. It will be when those speed are the norm.

Which is only 1000Mbps. Thats actually 1/8 of a GB. There's 8 bits in a byte. So to have gibabyte service, you'd need 8 THOUSAND Mbps.

There isn't any radiation.... the light traveling down the fiber is just a laser. If the laser can get out of the fiber then your service will not work.
