25 years ago, this race was special. Final win for Goodyear tires, AJ Foyt’s 5th Indy victory (1st as a team owner), Tony Stewart’s first attempt of double duty Indy/Charlotte, and Arie’s last race but returned 2 years later.
As a Robby Gordon fan, it hurts seeing this race…
The 1-2 finish in the race also happened in the 1998 Visionaire 500K. This was the 29th and last Indy 500 victory for Goodyear tires. It was a great day for A.J. Foyt as his cars finished 1st, 3rd and 6th. It was a 1-2-3 finish for Goodyear tires and six cars in the top 10 were on Goodyear tires.
"This is, and always will be, the greatest spectacle in racing". 🏁
Goodyear had developed a special narrow front tire for superspeedway racing starting with the 1998 Indy 500. It made them much more competitive in the IRL than CART. I believe they ran the same construction on the speedways in CART as well but other than Walker in 1998 and 1999, and Newman Haas in 1998 none of the top teams ran Goodyears.
I saw classic motorsports t.v. so much fun I was 10 years old!🏎🏁🏆
I love Al Michaels and this proves he’s just more than just a play by play football guy. Amazing storyteller.
my first Indianapolis 500 I WATCHED AND WOULD WATCH ALL BUT ONE SINCE THEN.
The best intro, better than Delta Force! Although 1992 is my favorite.
Seeing A.J. make that fifth trip to Victory Lane made this the greatest Indy 500 I've watched in the last 40 years. The only sour note was that Paul Page got removed from the booth because of an ABC edict that you couldn't call both CART and IRL races. I would have preferred it with Bob on radio that year and Paul on TV (never cared for Mike King on the radio network).
The sound reminds me of the song Afternoon Delight 😊
Sounded Like 7️⃣2️⃣0️⃣ Horsepower NASCAR Engines‼️ 🏎️💨🏁

Well, they are V8's but not the NASCAR Chevy or Ford blocks... they are the Oldsmobile Aurora V8's made exclusively for the Aurora luxury sedan, and tuned up to be throaty monsters in the IRL.
Please later post the 1997 Indy 500 edition too!
Coolest Pacecars ever
2008 Indy 500 next, please and also I miss the 90's

Robby Gordon was so close......
Gorgeous engine sound❤
Home sweet home
2:07:17 Arie definitely choked this one away. Was so much faster and got way too impatient with lap traffic

Real shame back when all the good drivers was in the other league when they were split up. Most of this field would have never made the show other wise
What was up with the fly over?
IRL or the best open wheel oval track drivers in the world?

No one died in them in 1999. In contrast to Gonzalo Rodriguez and Greg Moore.
