1999 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9L idles rough.
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
My truck started to idle rough about a year and a half ago. There are times where I would be at a stop light and it would idle rough and hiss. Sometimes it would die on me. I thought it was a broken vacuum line or maybe the thermostat (it doesn't overheat) but it could be the EGR valve or something else. I am not a mechanic but I can replace parts on the engine if needed. If anyone can help please post reply or video response. Thanks.

I had the same problem, I did a tune up plugs wires and cap and rotor. Replaced IAC, still did it. What fixed it was cleaning the entire throttle body really good, replaced upstream o2 sensor and used some chevron fuel system cleaner high strength. Runs like new.
Thank you for your input, I'm sure it will help someone who may have that problem. As far as letting you know what I find, the second video has the problem explained and there are links all through the video you made a comment on that leads to the second video.
David, I had the same problem with my 1996. I pulled the truck into the garage( at night w/ door open) and turned off the lights and the engine was on. I found that the spark plug wires were glowing in areas that they were in contact or close to any metal surface (valve cover) I replaced the wires and made sure to keep the wires clear from valve covers. The truck has been idling great and has more power.
Thanks Mike. I plan on doing that and maybe I will put a "how to" video up when I get it done. I am going to wait for warmer weather before I make the attempt. I really appreciate your input.
Yes, it's been a good truck. It's been in the family since it was new and passed down to me.
@spudbud2005 The cat was stolen from the truck about 4 years ago and when I had it replaced I don't think the new sensor was wired right. Which means you are right on. I really do appreciate your post the most. It's makes sense. Thank you!!!
I have the same truck and same problems at 140 thousand miles thanks for this I got a idea now
I have a 89 Dodge Ram W100 V8 5.2L 5.2 liter. My engine was doing almost the same as yours and I started asking and changing everything that was not wasting my money. I finally decided to take it to a certified mechanic and got it diagnosed. I had 1 faulty injector in the carburetor and they replaced the gaskets and decided to replace the other injector while there. My truck runs 100 times better. The replacement IS expensive but now I can drive it without praying I don't brake down.

+Earl Cacal I'm glad you were able to get it fixed and working again. Sorry that it was expensive though. I'm not working on mine anymore. I just decided that it's too old and need something more economical. I am putting it up for sale this month in my area.

I came across this video searching for what could cause a slight vibration at idle in my 95 5.2 ram and if this is normal, some others online say theirs always did this and others said just a tune up could fix it. To be honest with you, at 224k miles and with the bad rep these truck's transmissions have, I don't wanna sink alot of money into an almost 23 year old gas guzzler(that only cost me $800 and needed 4 used tires, inspection, and an oil/filter change) which at peak condition would get maybe 15mpg at best anyway. It gets me from A to B currently but I certainly don't plan on keeping this thing forever, going to save up for a cheap gas saver car personally. Due to its age, it could honestly need alot of nickle and dime parts that simply don't make it worth it. I'm sorry if anybody ever comes across this and it makes them mad, I do genuinely appreciate the truck (so far) being a reliable "beater" to get me around town, but, honestly, it's not the best idea using a gas guzzler as a daily driver, I feel guilty in my heart every time I fill the thing up knowing I could get at least double the MPG from even a cheap used Jap. car, heck, gas savings alone could make up for payments on a used car, or if bought outright pay for itself quickly in gas savings. I can empathize even moreso with people with the even more gas hungry 5.9 engines. Maybe I just need a tuneup, I don't have any check engine light on, though it seems a bit sluggish to accelerate, maybe that's just how these old heavy trucks are -shrug-
Thanks for the input. The water pump is working great. It doesn't over heat. When it does get to temperature is when the problem happens. I do believe it's the computer causing the problem because of the CAT o2 sensor. Thanks for the input.
That's great information. Thank you for writing it. I know it will help someone down the line.
That is initially the plan. Thanks for the suggestion. I appreciate it.
@GarageCrazy Thanks for the input. I have found that this is the case sometimes while it wasn't the problem with my truck.
This is likely the problem along with the MAF sensor. Thanks for the info. I'll look into this more.
I appreciate your comment. There are so many sources of vacuum and air flow of some sort that it can get frustrating trying to troubleshoot the problem. Sorry you had to take it to the shop. I guess when we run out of options that may be the best thing to do. I made a video that was a lot more detailed on the IAC and think I should go ahead and post it. I'm glad your investigating through youtube though. I have got a lot of help with the comments I get from my videos. Good luck to you.
Thanks for the suggestion. I already know what the problem is. The O2 sensor on the cat and the computer programming.
Thanks Steve for the info. It is worth looking into. That truck needs a lot of work. It's been a little neglected due to shortage of cash. Soon as I know something I will write you.
Definitely a 5.9 I got the same truck, is an 01 and just a week ago same issue with me, at first thought maybe one of my plugs wasn't sparking, more recently due to the bad smell out of my exhaust am thinking its an o2 sensor, im glad this worked for you because im going to hop right on it now, didnt want to replace it and find out that wasn't the case. Thanks

The smell is a possible catalytic converter sulfur(rotten egg) smell. O2 sensor would make sense with a bad cat as well. Maybe you both have the problem I've been having with the intake plenum pan gasket.

What ended up being the issue ?
you're oil pressure is fine, dodges read higher than what they really are.
I’m the kind of doofus who likes that sound
That's something that I never thought of. I've already solved my problem with the truck which was the IAC but I'm sure that someone will be able to use your information and solve their problem. Thanks for the input. I appreciate it.

Question ? If you still have the truck what sort of mileage should you be getting? Hwy? City? I also jave 1999 Dodge Ram 5.L
Hey, thanks for all the info. When it warms back up I will go through all the details of this and see if any of it applies. The idle is right. I think 800 rpm is common on most all engines. Don't know about diesel though. New cat in it since 3 years ago. Think the O2 sensors are new with it however I need to have the computer checked.
Thanks, I plan to make a video and show what I do. I'm waiting for warmer weather. My plan is to take the EGR out and see if I can clean it. I also plan to check the vacuum lines. Then I'll check the computer issues if the problem still exists. Thanks for the input.
@MUTUAL2002 Mine didn't have a blown gasket but some of the research I have done indicates that this can be a problem as well. Good information. Thanks for the input, I hope that it helps others who have the same problem.
No oil or antifreeze loss. Thanks for the input though. I hope that it may help others who read the comments.
I've had a 2000 Dodge Durango 5.9L for 5 months now. I'm running into the same problems. I used all the gas I had in the tank and added $40 of Sepreme gas from Chevron. It idles better and doesn't bog down apon accelerating. I noticed a huge differents. It already had new plugs, wires, cap & rotor. I plan on buying a Accel coil with pigtail adapter for $90. The gas stopped the vibration when accelerating from a stop and idle. There isn't a fuel filter to change so I'm running premium gas
Davis i have the same truck with same millage and it was doing something like that too. i fund out that the fuel rail rusted inside and all that rust was blocking the injectors.after i cleaned them up, the truck works like new again.
I just noticed the year of the video, WOW..... I have replaced the other things in your vehicle except for the heater core. Hope you sell it.
The comments on this video were super helpful i was stumped. Before watching this video i already replaced cap rotor plugs and wires and iac. In the morning i plan on cleaning the intake and map sensor and tps sensor and if that doesnt work i will try the upstream o2 sensor.

Did you fix your problem?
@DubbleDJay I finally found the problem in mine. I will post just in case it helps anyone else. I finally realized my idle was much worse on humid/wet days. It wouldn't start at all today. Just splutter and backfire. Found a very small crack in the distributor cap. Replaced rotor, cap, wires, and plugs and runnin smooth as can be so far. Its now FOR SALE! This trucks been a nightmare for the last 3 years. Thanks for the reply---
The catalytic converter was replaced a year ago. Thanks for the input though.
OK, on these Magnum engines...there is pan under the intake manifold. It is notorious that the gasket, subjected to hot oil, deteriorates and fails. Try this, unplug the hose from the breather on the driver side valve cover and plug the breather and the hose. Ensure that all hoses are plugged if they happen to be disconnected. Remove the oil fill cap and cover it with your hand, if you have a suction, that gasket has blown out.
I fixed mine myself I took the carburetor off and cleaned it. I replaced the throttle control arivale or whatever it's called and I put a new gasket took me about an hour. I also used a can of carburetor cleaner.
@lmnharris In my truck it was the IAC. I explain it a little in the second video. If you have annotations turned off you won't see the link I have displayed at intervals in this video that lead you to the second video. I did find out though that later years of Dodge trucks don't have EGR valves. I am not sure what year yours is if you already replaced it. To my knowledge an IAC is part of an electronic idle control to prevent the engine from stalling when AC is turned on or steering while parked
Had same problem with my 1990 silverado. It was the MAP sensor. Sprayed it with carb cleaner and fixed it.
I have a 5.2l v8 99 shortbed ram and it runs just like that after like five mins in park, almost sounds like it's gonna die but never does and when I am driving at very low speeds (10mph) through a lot it backfires and has very bad acceleration also does it when I get off a stop light. Hope your rig gets fixed there the best trucks on the road in my eyes

What was the issues?
Damn. That doesn't sound like a rough idle. Sounds like a huge duration cam, lmao. Just glad you got yours fixed. My 99 sport goes to the shop in the next few days to get the crank bearing replaced. Top to bottom. Which sucks for whoever is working on it at the Chrysler place.
I looked into this. The wire routing is okay but need to be replaced at this point. Appreciate the input.
Mine has been doing almost the same thing after sitting for about 8 months for transmission work. I was thinking it's the canister purge valve solenoid, but I will certainly try this
Meant off of comments btw not video, but video indirectly helped me with my issue, but same thing :P
Thanks for subscribing! I am not sure where the sensor is if you have a modified exhaust system. I do find that people at Chrysler are more than willing to help you locate it if you paid them a visit. I also know that if you were to do a search for an exploded view for that sensor it may make some sense for its location. I'm not sure if my answer is right for you because I am not a mechanic but I hope that my suggestion will help you. Good luck.
thanks for the video! my 98 has sat for 3 years and I am going to fire it up tomorrow. it had a rough idle when I parked it. guess ill clean the TB and censor. got a new battery, fuel boost, antifreeze, and ill pull the plugs and spray a little WD inside to protect the cylinder walls from the dry start. wish me luck!

Andrew Crook good luck:-)
I have the Same exact issue with my 95 and it's frustrating that I keep buying different sensors and not fixing the problem
Yep mines the o2 sensor also another possibility is if the check engine light isn’t on it’s not your o2 it’s probably gonna be the idle air control valve that’s about 40 bucks
Thanks for the compliment.
Gonna go and clean up my AIC as well hopefully that fixes it!!... my truck has been doing this for over a year...
Thanks, it was an upstream O2 sensor and the IAC. I made a second video explaining about the IAC.

I'm having same problem just did iac haven't done upstream yet but that's next
i have had 2 dakotas with the 5.2 318 which is very simmalar to the 5.9 and both times it was a stuck egr valve but it also sounds like you have a vaccum leak. Check for a vaccum leak by spraying carb clean around all the hoses and intake gaskets etc. If you notice a change in the idle when you spray something you have found the leak
I had that same exact issue, the hiss was the air intake sucking in air cause it was running rough and it was because the distributed cap connectors was corroded and never got a good connection and didn’t give enough spark to spark plugs
Engine light is not on. I'm almost certain it's the EGR or the vacuum line to it. If that fix doesn't work. I'll ask around about your suggestion. Thanks.
i have the same exact truck this is a common issue with dodge trucks mine was the IAC it costs me 39.99 for a duralast replacement with a lifetime warranty and that solved the problem.
I agree, it needs new plugs and wires. I know it's hard to tell with my video when the hissing starts. I'm lead to believe that it's the EGR valve or maybe a vacuum line for something else. It starts fine but like I said as soon as it warms up a little it runs rough and hisses. After a while it will stop. Thanks for the suggestion. I appreciate it.
That hissing noise could also be a leak in the intake manifold gasket especially if it runs good after being warmed up. I replaced/checked & or tested everything in the comments section of this video, IAC, MAP, ignition coil, wires, plugs, TPS, vacum hoses and they didnt fix it. So I took mine to the shop and they figuired out it was the intake manifold gasket by spraying brake cleaner on it. The brake cleaner swelled up the gasket and no more hissing / running ruff, proving the leak.
sounds exactly how my blazer sounded before i fixed it up. had to change the pcv valve, o2 sensor, and distributor cap
Sounds good
Mine had the same problem and it ended up being the upstream o2 sensor
3:10 when you get close to the airbox and it sounds like hissing, is that normal? in my 99 5.9 magnum, whenever I step on the gas it'll sound like I have a cold air intake with no filter, so I don't know if they're supposed to do that or maybe I just have a massive vacuum leak
@JoelxBrutalx15 Thanks, I'll give that a try. It makes a lot of sense to an extent. I will let you know how it works out.
that was happening to my truck.. a 1996 dodge ram 4x4. did all the tune up stuff and did not work, egr , u name it.....on my truck their are 3 power wires hooking up to battery. one to starter, one to the fuse box and third and most important a small greenish or dark colored wire which is a fusable link. all three were green and dirty inside but outside they looked new.after that ive had no rough idle and no popping or sucking of air, smoothe....hop that helped...i was so close to junking it!!!!
My 95 Ram has the same motor and idles a little rough but not that bad.. The engine has 220,000 miles on it. The o2 sensor will cause trouble in idle and so will the plugs, wires ,etc. The hissing you are hearing is just the intake because of the throttle body. Note: my truck no longer has the cat on it and the egr is no longer working. The check engine light only comes on if I need to replace my o2 sensor. I can get at least 22 mpg highway.
One more thing; shoot little squirts of carb cleaner wherever you suspect a leak. It will immediately change the pitch of the engine. Don't forget around the cylinder head/intake manifold area. Back of the engine too- there is a ton of hidden vacuum lines back their. Does it happen only on closed-loop (30-90 seconds is closed-loop until exhaust heats the lambda sensors in the cat and then it transitions to full closed-loop). Also- a bad MAP sensor can cause all sorts of bazaar behavior.
Yea no problem, yeah if you decide to do the video i'd be interested to see, I used to work at parts store and my boss was telling me that i should take out the EGR and try cleaning it or soaking it in hot water to get the diaphram going...So you could try cleaning it , I just took the easy approach and bought a new one.
its possible you need to replace the intake gasket set. Mine was sucking engine oil through the plenum pan gasket. It was gutless, poor mpg, even for a magnum v-8, but idled fine. Look for any other external vacuum leaks if you don't have a oil spill visible by looking down the throttle body.
My 97 does the very same thing 5.9 and 5.2 look the same.. Im going to clean throttle body and iac and see if that works. I have new o2 sensors and no cats so hope this works!!!?
It is s bad o2 sensor. Its sensing a false rich condition and the ecm is opening the IAC valve letting it more air to balance the mix. But its actually causing a very lean condition. It will also cause the bad exhaust smell
my dodge Dakota does the same thing sometimes when I start it up it will run rough till I rev it then it runs fine it may be a dodge thing I have had it looked at for the check engine light and they said there is nothing wrong with it besides a sensor that is bad
had the same problem. found out it is the rubber between the hood and the air vents right above the motor and distributor. when it rain water falls on top of engine and ecu plugs. took silicone sealer and stuck the rubber back on. no problem since.
There was someone else that said the same thing in the comments some time ago. I had that replaced but still had to replace the IAC as well. Too much build up on it to function right. Thanks for the comment. Hopefully it will help someone else.
I'm having the same problem. I just changed the iac sensor and it didn't change anything what was the fix??
Hey what did you mean by the hissing sound? I have the same symptoms as the others but I also feel air movement on the back left of the motor like its coming out of the exhaust manifold
No reply from the OP in the past 5 months. Have you fixed this yet? What have you done so far? I see a lot of people describing a faulty EGR valve, but I don't think my 1998 5.9L gas V8 has such a valve. Have you investigated the intake manifold gasket idea? Are you getting any codes? These kind of discussions are useful, but it would be gold to have a repair solution described by the owner.
yes i do mine does to,,your coil is getting moisture where your spark plug wire goes on ittake your spark/coil wire off put a dap of grease or vaseline and will be good carry some in truck just incase needed will work for sure
@slipknot12390 Replace the intake air controller. It costs about 50 bucks or you can try to clean it with carb cleaner but be real careful if you decide to do it that way. Just take off the filter and in the back of the throttle body is where it will be. It's fairly easy to get to and replace.
what size is the fuel line on these? I'm working on putting this engine in my 87 ramcharger and need to make sure I have the right size line to provide enough fuel

I don't know. I don't own the truck anymore. If you go to a Dodge dealer they usually have some specs that they can print off for you or maybe you can ask a mechanic.
I worked for Dodge from 1994 - 2004 The 5.9 L V8 had a bad problem with the intake plenum gasket getting sucked into the plenum and making the truck run ruff and miss. Check the TSB's on this problem. one way of checking is to look down in to the throttle body and you'll see an oily resido, (sometimes the truck will use oil, but thats not always true) 98% of the times its in the back of the plenum at the thinnest point of the plenum.. good luck

Just replaced mine the right way, and still doing it. It's the 02 sensor.
Yes, it stalls once in a while while I'm at a stop light. It also will come out of the "idle fit" if I rev up the engine for a little while. I believe my issue is the EGR valve or a vacuum line that runs to it. Reving up the engine may produce higher vacuum pressure to finally activate the EGR and fix the idle issue. I'm only guessing, I'm not a mechanic. I plan to put another video out in the spring about what I do to fix it.
The idle issue, (and I didn't hear it on your truck), is most likely the #1 cylinder dropping. Try plugs ans wires first as it probably needs them anyway. The 5.2 and 5.9 were infamous for a dead hole in #1. Not sure if it's electromotive induction misfiring the #1 high tension lead or the injectors ability to ground. We would flash the PCM to the latest and it fixed the issue. Almost as soon as it was released Dodge forbid it's use; the PCM flash image is not EPA compliant.
I have the same problem on my 2001 dodge ram 1500 I've got the 5.2 318 need help figuring out the problem. Any luck with your truck?
Tengo el mismo problema, por favor puedes decir cómo lo solucionaste
when I rev my engine up it goes down fast and then slows down really slow why
mine was just like that sounded like it was a stroker motor like it was camed out of this world cleaned the throttle body and put n a new iac valve solved that but it lopes a little
Did you figure the problem My sons truck is doing the same thing sounds like it’s sucking air in the engine only does it when it heats up and idle..
I would have said clean air intake. My 98 was CLOGGED and I would have to keep it throttled at a stop sign. Cleaned and recharged air intake and it fixed it. Yes I know it's a really old vehicle but there ya go man!
The Factory airbox likes to whistle allot
its running really rich..
@bcountre my xj has that code problem and is now running real rough does this make the whole truck buck a little when idleing and when on the gas its a little shaky
Any idea what it was? Mine idles rough if I let it sit in park for a few min if it hasn't been running for a few hours. Never in gear though. Also mine makes the hissing noise when I'm driving. Dunno what.
Mine is the same problem but don't have the money to fix it now is it bad to drive it like this
I have the same problem. Did ya find out what it was?
@StillOnWin95 Its a timing chain. There is nothing wrong with the timing as it only does this idling. Sounds like the egr.
Add Lucas fuel injector cleaner, you may have old fuel or buy cheap gas, clean EGR valve.Take it on highway and blow it out.
I kind of like the sound :) sounds cammed. Hope you got it fixed! It could be a magnitude of things

I was able to get it fixed and I show what it was in my second video. It has a few other issues that need to be addressed but I have given a lot of thought to selling the truck and getting something newer.
@DubbleDJay Agreed. My '94 5.2L did the exact same thing when an O2 sensor went bad. Should be a cheap, easy fix if that's the problem.
To clarify, when there IS suction the gasket is blown or No suction it's blown?
mine had the same problem then i cleaned the throttle body and also clean the Idle air control valve
vacuum line, happens when sits for long time, lines get cracked and hissing sound occurs. Affects engine performance. My Father in law sells customers transmission rebuilds when this happens. Vacuum lines are VERY important

EGR VALVE!!!! I bet it's clogged just happened to me.. I pulled the hose off evaporate canister under truck driver side and off EGR valve and it was clogged.. Cleared the line. Changed plugs, wires and cap. Perfect truck again.. Oh and PVC. Total $65 or less. 2 days ago
I have the same problem with mine and it was an O2 sensor worth a shot
EGR Valve. Under a hundred bucks for the part. Same thing happened to mine. There is a vacuum pump mounted on top of the part that will melt open and make the hiss
That's the classic symptom of a failed upstream oxygen sensor. To test for that just unplug the pigtail and run the engine to the point it would have begun acting up. If the problem doesn't occur, it's that sensor. Replace the thing and off you go.
If I owned a diesel again it would be a Ford F series truck. I had a new 2003 and loved it.
