98 was s great season. VW returned to the SA rally championship with a factory Golf A3 for Jan Habig/Doug Judd. Serge Damseaux/Vito Bonafede won the opening two events before Habig turned the tables and dominated the season until the penultimate round, the Agip rally, held in the western cape. Damseaux overheated the Conquest and retired. Habig had a clear run to the finish and the title but hit a rock that ripped the left front wheel off the car. To get out of the stage Judd got into the boot to try and weigh the car down and completed the stage. Toyota protested due to Judd not wearing his seatbelt for the remainder the stage and Habig/Judd were excluded from the final results. The championship was settled in favour of Damseaux after a court of appeal after the final event.
