1998 Jeep Wrangler TJ or XJ Steering Gearbox Replacement (How to change your Power Steering Gearbox)

This is a DIY on how to replace your Power Steering Gearbox on your Jeep Wrangler TJ (or XJ). This video was on a 1998 Jeep Wrangler 4.0L. 1997-2006 have similar set ups and can use this video to better understand the process. Please do not attempt to do this if you do not have any experience in maintenance of your vehicle. Due to this impacting the driving aspects of your Jeep, use a certified mechanic to avoid any risks if you are unsure. Safety first. This video is only intended to provide general information about replacing a steering box and is only an example of work performed on John's Jeep Garage vehicles. The Gearbox purchased for this 1998 Jeep Wrangler was a remanufactured ACDelco Integral Steering Gear Part no. 36G0133. I purchased this from Auto Zone which had the lowest price for the same model. #jeepwrangler #jeeplife #jeeps ‪@JohnsJeepGarage‬

Thank you for this video. I've watched a few other videos that don't go into as much detail in explanation and with with the amount of detail in the camera work. I'm replacing the steering box and pitman arm on my 98 XJ tomorrow, so I'm glad I ran across your video.

Great Video! Probably the best video on you tube how to change your gear box, Clean and well documented and great video quality. John, consider adding "TJ" or "XJ" on your tittle, you will get more hits and people find your video easier (my case). I just signed up to comment this and say thanks! Keep those jeep videos coming.

1000 Thank You's!!!!! Ijust changed tie rods this morning. I noticed a drip coming down by the pitman arm. Figured I do some research. Saw your video and it opened my eyes to possible causes. Heck it might just be the O-Ring off of the pressure lines. I was preparing for the worst in thinking of gearbox replacement.

I used the 33 mm on the pitman arm nut but I was told it’s a 1 and 5/16. The 33 is a loose fit ! Also had an issue getting the pitman arm off with the harbor freight tool (it bent) so I got the OTC and I heated the part of the arm that encircles the shaft and it popped right off. The heat did it !

The time had finally come to do it. My daughter drives the 1998 TJ and the loose steering was becoming a safety factor for her. The steering is now tight and I now sleep better at night. :) Thank you for the feedback!

John, Great Video. You covered every aspect from start to finish. One thing I must comment on, is how clean the underside of your daughters Jeep is. "TAKE PRIDE IN YOUR RIDE". I have a 99 TJ Sport that I am getting ready to do a complete rebuild of the front end components. Steering box , Ball Joints, Tie Rod ends axle u-joints and bushings. It has 160K miles of hard wheelin' miles and its time. Did you go back with a stock box? Or did you buy an upgraded. What size tires is she running?

Cooper Discoverer STT Pro LT 275/70/R17 are the tires with Battle Axe Fuel Wheels. Also I used the Rugged Ridge Steering (Dampner) Stabilizer when I did my front end. I purchased a reman AC Delco Steering Box. The number is in the description. I work in the Manufacturing Industry and believe in the principles of TPM (Total Productive Maintenance). I believe if my daughter or anyone owns a piece of equipment or vehicle, they need to know it. They may not be a total expert but with the principles in TPM for AM (Autonomous Maintenance) an operator (or car driver) should be able to change fluids, check for wear, understand when something is not running correctly and try to detect problems early. Without complicating what I said above, the simple way to do this is through some basic principles. Objective - Restore basic conditions - doesn't mean it has to be new, but get things cleaned, tightened and lubricated and start to replace broken and worn out parts that is past its life span and prioritize what needs to be done first. Focus on eliminating forced deterioration which results in premature breakdowns caused by dirt and equipment not lubricated, not tightened. I try to teach my daughter that cleaning inside and outside of the Jeep helps you see when something has changed (metal shavings, oil, leaks, belt particles, etc). When it is so dirty you can't see when something changes, then it doesn't help. An old industry saying is: Clean to Inspect Inspect to Detect Detect to Correct And Correct to Perfect. Sorry for the long reply, but this approach extends the life and ensures a better longer ride. I am passionate about it at work and at home. I appreciate your feedback and hopefully it helped. I have some more pictures on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter with JohnsJeepGarage.

Great video thanks, I recently replaced the steering box and upper and lower ball joints on my TJ. Then i made a test drive and steering would not center after turns. Its stuck in the position and I have to center it back. Did four wheel alignement at a workshop to times and still same. When car is standing still the stearing is light so I know pump is working fine. It just wont return to center and its really dangerous in highways. I bought a reburshed box, do u think its the box or the joints that is faulty? Hope u can guide me a little bit appreciate that🙏

Thanks for watching. This is one of those problems where multiple factors could be involved. I cannot tell you since I am not able to see what may be occurring. But ball joints, steering gear, alignment all play a part. Based on what you described I would first investigate the ball joints. Do you have a shop that specializes in Jeeps near you? This is an interesting read…. www.jkowners.com/threads/steering-not-returning-to-center-on-stock-2009.353985/

@@JohnsJeepGarage thanks for fast reply👍👍 from link it seems to be the ball joints at first. So i am checking those and try to disconnect the tie rod so i will se if its still stiff or loose. And work my way throughout it. We dont have a local jeep mechanics here so I have to learn to fix it my self🤓 wish you a good day!

New Jeep owner here, same model as the one in the video. Someone said something about air getting stuck in the power steering system, is that something I really need to worry about and how do I prevent or fix that

Thank you for watching our channel. Yes, the same as brakes, you could get air trapped in the power steering pump. Normally this is evident with a noise and difficulty steering. There are ways to remove the air from the system. I don't have a video on this but it is a subject I should add on my list of videos. You can search for other videos on KZread to visually show you how to do it. I am only sharing this as a description but please watch a video so it will give you some more specific information. As a summary, you always want the engine off and ensure it is cool. If you are going to bleed it, I first would fill the power steering reservoir to the top. There is a bleed valve on the gearbox. It is near the high pressure hose connection point. Just like you would bleed brakes, place a tubing on the valve connection so you can channel the fluid to a drain bin or pan from the bleed valve. Turn on the engine to engage the pump/box and you will have to loosen the bleed valve slightly so it will allow fluid to bleed and then turn your wheel right or left multiple times. You don't want to drain your fluid all the way and create more air, so you will need to monitor the level. Just like brake fluid, you don't want to see bubbles in the fluid. If air is trapped in there it will come out with the fluid in the form of bubbles. You need to keep shutting off the engine and add fluid to the reservoir and repeat the process until there are no more bubbles. Only do top off the fluid when the engine is off. Then replace the cap, start the engine again and repeat the procedure. Be careful and get a professional service tech to inspect your system if you have keep having bubbles. There may be a leak. If you do not see any leaks, do not hear loud noises and steering is not difficult, then you may not have any issue. I realize this answer is not a "how to" video but hopefully it just gives you an idea of what can occur and a way to bleed the fluid. Always seek professional help if you have not done this before. Thank you again for watching.

I added a response to the other question as well. I went with an remanufactured AC Delco Gearbox. It is much tighter than the one she had. She doesn't put a lot of miles on the TJ so I probably would have to wait another year to give you a good assessment after some more time with it. But for now I am pleased. Thank you for your question.
