1998 Daytona 500 FINISH

Спорт

The final 5 laps of the 1998 Daytona 500, as Dale Earnhardt is able to fend off his competitors until the spinning cars of John Andretti and Lake Speed bring out the caution with one lap to go.

    "20 years of trying, 20 years of frustration..." 20 years later, to this day, we still miss you, Dale! One day, we will see him again, and anyone and everyone who gives him hate in the comments, or when he was still alive, will have to answer for their foolish actions. Dale Earnhardt will forever be remembered for this day...the victory at the white flag, the fist pump out the window at the checkered flag, the amazing sight of "Every man on every crew...", the spins in the grass, and the dark day 3 years later! We're excited to see you again one day, buddy!

No matter what, I remember that crash in turn 4 back in 2001... everytime I see anything nascar. I had a Masonic brother who was Virginia state police tell me about getting all these guys in Martinsville, VA... he said “Dale Earnhardt, Waltrip, Yarborough & all these guys, were hanging out during a rain delay. Back then it was all the talk about how much these guys hated each other on the track but they were all such good friends really, I sat & talked with DW & Dale for during the whole delay, they were the coolest guys to talk to, real down to earth.”...

    brandon blythe Actually, that's a misconception. NASCAR doesn't retire numbers (else they would have retired the 43 long ago). Richard Childress Racing had re-leased the 3 for 20 years in 2000 or so, and after Dale died, Childress himself put a moratorium on the number, vowing to never use that number for that car ever again, but when Childress's grandson Austin DIllon asked to use it, Richard gave him his blessing, saying that's what Dale had also wanted.

  • @kevinclarke7015

    @kevinclarke7015

    9 жыл бұрын

    Yes, I am sure Dale wanted the number he made legendary, not just in NASCAR, not just in racing, but in sports in general, to be passed down to childress' spoiled grandson that doesn't even come a fraction close to deserving to drive that number. If anyone deserves to use the 3 it should only be his son jr. It should at very least not be used in the same font for anyone who isn't an Earnhardt.

  • @kevinclarke7015

    @kevinclarke7015

    9 жыл бұрын

    btw I am not saying that because I am a jr. nationer or whatever those guys call themselves. However if anyone was to use the number again it should be Earnhardt's son or grandchildren. Also, I really hope they asked Jr. if they could use the 3 before giving it to Dillon.

    This coming February 15th I can't believe it will be TWENTY YEARS since this anticipated moment in NASCAR history took place, and FOURTEEN YEARS since Dale Jr. took the lead with 19 laps to go (led the final 20) and completed the third Father-Son duo to win the 500. There was another 20, because when Bill France Jr. flipped the MUSCO switch for the outside lights at Daytona, Earnhardt drove 20 laps around the track and he said he saw Daytona in a whole new light. Areas he didn't even know that he could apply in daylight. He dominated and looked like he was going to win the inaugural nighttime Pepsi 400 but he hit a tire like a hockey puck that bent the valence. He actually finished better at night in the 400 than before the 400 was put at night. I just remember seeing this race and couldn't believe it. It's unfortunate though that this years 500 will be held on February 18th, 2018, but could you imagine Austin Dillon winning his Duel in the #3 because the Duels will be held on 2/15/2018.

    This video puts in perfect perspective why Mike Joy is one of the absolute best in the business of sports broadcasting. “Twenty years of trying, twenty years, of frustration, Dale Earnhardt will come to the caution flag, to WIN the Daytona 500! FINALLY...”

    Finally get to see this moment after 14 years. So Awesome!!! I don't watch NASCAR anymore (not due to his passing, just too much changed), but this is still a momentous moment.

    Was lucky enough to be watching that race from the Campbell Grandstand. The weather was miserable at about 58 degrees and misty. Didn't matter when the 3 crossed the finish line. Awesome sight with the pit crews. Everyone seemed to stay and watch the trophy presentation.

    My favorite memory of the Great Dale, forgot the race, but there was a rain delay. Reoprter walking around interviewing the drivers. Got close to Dale and hecwas sprawled out on tires sleeping. Cool as the blue ice in icebergs. What a loss.

    I get chills when they come through turn 3 after Mike Joy announces about the caution knowing they're comin' to the line and it'll end the race and that Earnhardt will win after 20 tries. Amazing job by Earnhardt! RIP Dale. NASCAR has never been the same since.

    What I find entertaining about this is that in 1993, it was Dale Earnhardt and Dale Jarrett battling with Jarrett in the #18. Then comes 1998, Dale had the #18 behind him again during those last few laps. Almost a repeat finish, but even though I wasn't an Earnhardt fan I thought it was great that he finally won the 500.
