I got my 05 town car from copart for $500. Only had 98,500 miles and 2 owners. Pristine condition other than the fender bender that somehow got it totaled. It literally only needed a fender bumper cover and bumper reinforcement. It could use a new hood but definitely does nothing to the driveability. I'm so blessed to have gotten this car for $500.

Great video, great channel. Walk up to the Town Car, walk around it, are the tire valve stem caps missing tag bolts missing, open the door, smell new or trash, owner's manual still in the glove box and the door keypad code card, 1 key-2 keys or 3 keys. the Best cars will still have all 3 keys, spare tire never used, all booklets, tag bolts, valve stem caps. Open the hood and look for coolant leaks all around the intake and look at the under intake heater pipe for severe rust on the pipe behind the alternator in the engine valley, 1991-1997 the under intake heater pipe has a rubber hose section right behind the water pump-this hose will burst with old age just like a 28 year old radiator hose. 98+ solid metal. Coolant full? Premium battery? 4 matching tires? pull the oil fill cap off and look down onto the head for oil sludge. a clean head top means great care. nasty varnished and sludged, walk away now. look for cut wire and aftermarket stuff under the hood. reach down with you hand and rub the bottom side of the AC accumulator(salt states) and AC compressor- look for green oil on your fingers. These compressors are usually robust for 250,000 miles or so. walk to the rear axle- look for axle oil leaks in the wheel windows or on the back side of the tires, look to see if the car still have air ride or a coil spring conversion kit. start the car- listen for 1-3 seconds of loud start up clatter- this would mean the car will need a timing set soon, especially if it is pushing 200,000 miles. factory radio still or aftermarket? driver's seat still moves correctly on wooden steering wheel cars- easy exit feature kills these seat tracks in time. run the self test on the HVAC- start the car- hit off and floor at the same time- let up off the off and floor button at the same time for 1 second and then hit "Auto". HVAC fault codes will appear after 30 seconds- no codes- the whole screen lights up- hit windshield defrost to exit. put the car in gear and go- transmission shifts smoothly, roaring or grinding from the rear axle? the adjustable pedals should move 5-6 inches- if they only move 1/4th and inch, its because the plastic gear splits on the brake pedal side and the drive cable jams. the brake and gas pedal move off one motor that's by the gas pedal and you can disconnect the drive cable and the gas pedal will be free to move. you can then manually move the brake pedal. most of these are stuck all the way up- close to the seat bc of elderly previous owners that were very short. items to consider replacing soon. timing set on the 1999-00 01+, the older ones have a far more robust timing set with metal tensioners and metal spines on the chain guides. engine oil consumption can be a huge issue on the 4.6, especially 1991-1997, 1 quart every 500 miles is not unusual. replace valve stem seals. replace the oil filter adapter gasket every 12-18 years with at least 100,000 miles. rear air suspension air bladders every 12-18 years EATC blend door actuator(s) every 12-19 years. 1990-2002 has one motorized blend door actuator and it does hot to cold. 2003+ has 5 blend door actuators that do all functions-no more vacuum motors in the dash on 03+ for climate. sagging door hinges. loosen the top 3 hinge to body bolts and tap the entire door hinge forward towards the front of the car like 1/20th an inch at a time, get it perfect and tighten the 3 bolts back. missing door code, 2002 and older still have the code in the trunk on the trunk hinge, some 03's do, a few 04s do. 2005 and older still have the door code on the drivers door module inside the driver's door behind the door panel. 2006+ deleted the code- electronic retrieval is your only option if the key code card is lost.

Last summer bought me a 2000 Lincoln town car 91k miles, elder owned, body and interior perfect, garage kept. settled at $1200. So far ive replaced and fixed everything you mentioned. Air bag to spring conversion, all coils and plugs, intake manifold, thermostat and coolant flush, tierods, balljoints, sway links, pitman and idler arms. Didnt have to replace the exhaust manifolds yet. All I owned was crown vics, and marquis so I knew what I was getting into. Even with low miles these can develop these issues but I still say its worth if for these cars if you know your way around them and if you get them cheap enough. They are very strong cars and very good for longevity. Mine came a long way and I love it.

I just adopted my mother-in-law's 2004 Ultimate. Garage kept with 36,000 original miles. Other than a couple rusted out catalytic converters, rear pads and rotors and a busted caliper, it seems to be in good working order. We did discover the leaking issue (after taking it out of the garage), but I think I've got that resolved. Other than that, this thing is almost mint. I have been enjoying your videos and now share your affinity for this sweet ride. Any other tips you have for a car that's done a lot more sitting than driving, are much appreciated.

You speak with authoritative knowledge. I would humbly add that high mileage is not a turnoff if the vehicle were kept well and the previous owner(s) had already remedied the common known faults of the platform. Gotta know what to look for. I'm concerned with frame rot on these older classics from the snowy States that use road salts in the winter. On the northern Panthers also the steering shaft corrosion/failure between the firewall and the rack & pinion.

It's funny this video came up in my feed. I have been thinking about the possibility of getting a Town Car of that generation. I have a 1997 that I got free in 2010. It was owned by a 90 year old who had stopped driving, At the time it had about 66k or 67k miles on it. Now it's over 150k. The last time I drove it, it had run out of power steering fluid. The check engine light has been on for years now, and my mechanic says a bad catalytic converted triggered that. For many years it has had an intermittent problem with not starting, even though it would crank over just fine. In the Lincoln owner Facebook groups, I was told by many people that it's most likely a bad crank sensor. Unfortunately a year ago the problem got worse, and it was no longer intermittent. I love the car though, which is why I thought about the possibility of getting a Lincoln from the next generation, like yours, or getting that one fixed, or getting another like mine.

    I. Own several of these. Avoid the 2003 year like the plague. They have horrible issues with rear axles that were not hardened properly. Fleet cars were recalled, private vehicles only got tsb. If the floor is wet on the passenger side don't worry, it is an easy fix that cost under $20 and only takes 30 minutes. The cars here in the South don't rust. The only other issues are air ride bags that leak, and look out for cracks in the plastic intake if the millage is high or the car is 2003 or prior. Last join Lincoln forums online. There you find answers to just about any question you have.

also the leak you speak of most DON'T even completly understand where it originates from they just know how to stop it by covering something else up many people from the Lincoln forums come to me because I've done the homework and ripped these cars apart from front to back and there is actually more than one main are to get that leak and several reasons the floor would be wet I like to say I'm a little bit better informed than most Lincoln forums due to the fact I not only have the experience but a several hundred book library on all this stuff at work I don't mind Lincoln forums they are great but alot of those guys email me for documents diagrams and fixes that don't work that are recommended there last week dude was talking about his 2009 P71 and how much he's been replacing to get to the bottom of an egr problem and I simply walked him through finding the wire that grounds out on the back of the intake manifold area in probably 20min of talking to him....problem fixed it's my profession and I love these cars and helping people I try and keep the retention of questions here if possible instead of a forum but I do see the benefit in them as well for sure.

Had a diagnostic test done yesterday and it said I had a misfire on a cylinder ( changed plugs and coil) and had a old egr valve code come up. Changed egr valve after I reset everything and it came back up and now I got a code p0141 for o2 sensor. . I'm thinking of just cutting my cats cause its been alot of heat coming from underneath (my floors are even getting hot) .

I let the dealership do my intake. I already had the intake a dorman but for some reason it wouldn't seal right. They had to put two gaskets in (E6AZ9D476B and E83Z9F670A) after the gaskets were installed and the surface was cleaned for installing them my fuel trim numbers came down drastically. I occasionally check my fuel trim numbers using an actron obd scanner. By using this I could tell if the check engine light was going to come back on for a P0171 code.
