    Thanks! If you run headers with cats, you can drill out a set of spark plug de-foulers and put them in-between the o2 sensors and the headers. This will take the o2 sensors out of the stream of the higher flowing cats or no cats and should trick the computer into thinking everything is fine.

    i\ They label some trans ams and formulas with ram air decals but even the v6 were ram air...the "gap/nose hood latch area" and slot in lower air box both got air in front of radiator ...I had a 2002 white convertible auto 3.8 that I did the "free box mod" and it did make a bit of difference. I took the bottom box and cut the rear section a inch or 2 near the rear of the box and then i took the lid inside and while my wife watched one of those hundred ncis shows, i used my vice grips and bit each fin and wiggled till it popped off flush and then sanded it smooth with 320 grit and sprayed it with clear along with a k&n stock size filter. now i also had installed the flowmaster thunder series cat back i bought used for 75 and tuned it with hypertech power programmer.... the car was very quick beat all the v6 i raced, along with all the 95 gt mustangs and all of the same yr v6..I had bought a SS aluminum driveshaft to replace the stock 2 piece steel one (tho I had not been under car and since mine was 2002 it may had come 1 piece///anyways) and a GU6 3;42 but didnt get to install it b4 a guy fell asleep and almost hit wife head on but she swerved and ended up sideswiped and 180 but not badly hurt....anyways it did make a difference I also have the $500 k&n cold air intake for v6 that i didnt get to install. Im pretty sure it wuda been very close to a stock auto LT1with all the mods i didnt get to install.... I like the looks of ur volant..thinking about putting my car in local car shows and since its NBM WS6 Convertible the blue wud look nice with hood open along with the under hood mirrors..if u decide to go diff route with ur volant let me know

    A lot of things factor in but with a Ram Air hood I definitely wouldn't cut the bottom of the box out to pull air from the hot asphalt. Pulling it up high is better and with those nostrils you should get plenty of air flow. The Volant should be very effective. Non Ram Air cars though, who knows. The box mod would definitely get more air volume but in summer the air would be much hotter. Maybe defeating the whole purpose? But on cooler days when the asphalt isn't 130 degrees the box mod would be very effective so I guess it depends on when and where you drive.

    i have a volant intake like urs but not installed... drunk hit my 2002 ws6 convertible car in rear and ran but got caught and of course had no insurance so I had to pay the deductible but got my car back and bought a whole rear quarter since they dont make rear quarter panels...anyways i have not installed it yet, I also have the slp lid as well. I was wondering what if you cut a section of the bottom of the volant intake and still get the advantage of the ram effect since it take air in from bottom of the car,, what do you think?

  • @chevyfan1251992
    @chevyfan12519923 жыл бұрын

    My opinion on the Volant's is that with the hood closed, you'll lose that that area you're explaining will be an added intake path. The cut out in the hood for what's coming in matches the dimensions of the factory air box for this reason. If we really wanna get crazy about it, you could say that the cones in the Volant also promote unwanted vortexes because of the spherical path the air must take to enter either cone at their 45 degree angles and because they're circular. In contrast, the factory setup/SLP promotes even flow over the entire filter surface and the entire interior is contoured with no sharp angles in the corner of the box. This is most likely the reason for the ribbed design on the underside of the GM lid, it acts as a funnel to direct things towards the MAF. I'll be eager to hear you future results!

  • @Bird-dl7xs

    So in your opinion the SLP is the best option? What about the SLP Ram air that grabs the air underneath? How do you feel about those with the slp lid?

    @@Bird-dl7xs For now I just expect them to be (or at least the design style like them) for the reasons I mentioned in my first comment. When it comes to the ram air duct kit they offer, I'll say I bet it helps increase air flow to the filter but idk if the price and effort is worth the gains yet. Id want to learn about that myself too. At the end of the day, hot road surfaces will just send hot air into what should be a cold air intake. Also there will be a point where your MAF will be the limiting factor in how much air the engine can draw in. Lots of factors but fun to test out.

    Good video, and beautiful car. I've been internally debating about lid vs volant for over a decade now. What I really want to know is if there's enough space to modify the Volant intake to accommodate a 100mm intake pipe for a seamless match to a FAST 102/102 combo. If you find the time could you provide me with the diameter of the Volant intake "pipe"? Please give me your opinion on fitment considerations for such a modification. I really appreciate it.

    You'll like it! You'll like the added noise from any of these intakes. Make sure you look into the extra piece needed to make sure the lid holds onto the radiator. Don't want that radiator falling into your cooling fan.

    I can't speak fully to what the stock intake lid sounds like, mine had the painted SLP lid on it when I bought it, I now have a black SLP lid with a factory sticker on it. That being said, I will say when I bought my car and didn't have exhaust on it yet, it made a good amount of engine noise. In a good way. I would say that you will definitely gain some engine noise out of it.

Now I have to ask if you can please direct me to where I can find those valve covers that you have painted to match that read Trans Am? Terrible idea to cut the bottom out..I did a engine scan on one with the intake cutout and without it. With the cutout it raises the intake Temps 30-40dgz all coming from the radiator.

    What do you think about when people cut up the bottom stock lid up with them raising the intake temps..reason being you are no longer covering the radiator and you are sucking up hot radiator air. Seems like it is defeating the purpose.
