    That bottom right plug is a check valve if you ever remove it you could loose the tiny spring and inside part of the check valve and they are no longer available. There is also a check valve on the back side of the unit exactly the same as the front one, one is for up the other is for down. I was able to find a balance point on the motor with the safety stand flipped down and was able to remove the top pin with a pair of pliers after I pulled out the split key. I used penetrating oil overnight and the bottom tapped out with no problem. Great video, was a great help to me.

    Thank you so much for this video ! My 2000 40 HP Johnson was doing the same thing. My buddy and I took it off the boat and replaced every seal and it was still having the same issue, I was about to give up put the motor in the second mounting hole and just not have power trim, that is until I found your video. 2:34 the seal must have the opening down ! I took mine back apart following what you did as I didn't want to remove it completely again ( the way you showed is a huge time saver ) and what do you know I had that seal opening facing up. I fixed that orientation and now my power trim doesn't leak a drop ! Can't thank you enough man, Thanks a lot !

    @@FishinTooling I have a question if I may ask. I just noticed oil on mine a month ago when I gave it a tune up. It had oil on the top at the plunger so I guess it's a common seal to wear out. The question I have is that the housing where you fill the oil looks like it's starting to get rust as the paint is flaking. Nothing looks rusted out but I was curious if you think there's anything I can do to stop it. Like either sand it and repaint it or just spray something that can stop it from rusting further right where it's at now so I can get through this season then I can change that metal cap where the motor is housed. What kind of oil is this just hydraulic pump oil?

    @Jean Ponce it should be aluminum but if you are seeing some rust or corrosion that you want to take care of anywhere, I would clean with a Scotch Brite pad and spray with a rust reformer or rust inhibitor spray paint that is made to paint over slightly rusted surfaces. That should hold you over for quite a while. For the fluid, they make a quicksilver or similar brand power trim fluid that is pretty cheap and can get at a few different stores like bass pro shops. Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions!

    Great video you really took the time to show the psrts and where they are. I've had my boat for 2 summer's now and know my friend that I bought it from didn't do any maintenance to it in 4 yrs. I'm not sure what the previous owner's knowledge was but time to get this baby into ship shape. I hope that the seals are all still good for now, but this Friday the fluid will be changed out. Thanks for the knowledge that I can do this myself.

Come on you tube, probably at least 5000 used your vid to fix their shitty 20 year old motor ( like me) rather than pay a shop $150 an hour. I was unable to get the cap to break loose with my cheap spanner wrench, I tried a punch and hammer that didn't work either. I eventually heated the outside at the top to get it to break loose. I did not heat it enough to destroy the paint.

    I have a 1997, 40 horse power Johnson, and mine is leaking at the top of the cap just like yours is but think my fluid is out cause it want move to much but you can hear the electrical part working so I am gonna do exactly the same way your replaced yours without removing the upper or lower pin. Seems alot quicker to me to do it exactly the way you did your reseal.

    Fishin Toolin Is the tilt designed to act as a trim too and hold it's ground under engine power or does it just slowly go do to the bottom as default position? Just don't know if the tilt is strong enough to handle the engine under full power.

  • @FishinTooling

    Yes sir it will work as both trim and tilt. I usually run mine trimmed up slightly when on plane. I have no problems with it moving position under full power.

  • @FishinTooling

    @FishinTooling

    Nicholas, if the motor is running but it's not moving then it probably needs the internal seals replaced. Also there are check valves that could be bad too. My best advice is to do a tear down and get some rebuild kits. If the motor still runs, that's a good sign.

  • @brandonhughes0114
    @brandonhughes0114 Жыл бұрын

    Thanks for this. Like mine, I notice when you are filling it with new oil, the unit is not exactly level as it is slightly at an angle with the transom. Does this matter as far as filling it with oil and getting as much as possible in there? I've tried to find a hill steep enough to get mine level when I'm filling it but haven't found one yet. I'm putting off changing these seals but I'm researching and buying the tools needed as I know it will need to be done at some point as it leaks at the top of the piston and the motor slowly seeps down. But for now it works enough to keep fishing.

  • @FishinTooling

    @FishinTooling

    Жыл бұрын

    You should be able to fill at different angles. Most important is cycling a bunch of times to self bleed. Just inspect every once in a while and if you don't see fluid sitting on top of the cylinder then you are probably OK. I kept seeing fluid after each trip and that's why I know I had to change the seals.
