Had a 87 Compact Wagoneer (cherokee XJ) and now have 2000 XJ.The newer one's interior is a little nicer.Plus plastic is less brittle .My 87 Wagoneer was a better jeep though(AMC).No problems for first 22 years.Got a 1991 Comanche and now want to do the console upgrade.Already changed the color to Camel and the front end/plus Doors to a 98.Thanks for the video.

I prefer the 96 console myself... but you can't argue with actual cup holders.. xD

I so started to do this also, I got one also from junkyard then was mad when I realized the few things that was changed like the e brake. Ended up not swapping I just put my old one back, great video on it man!

I was told to use a XJ center console lid cuz it has cup holders..nice video I'm about to do this with my 96

You don't have to take out the button on the shifter all you have to do is put it in 1st get in the backseat (more leverage) and reach over the console and pull.

What year model did the new center console come out of and did it have the same bolt patterns as the old one 2 go back in

Nice work, man. I've been thinking of doing that to my '96. XJ. A couple of questions. 1) When you were mounting the e-brake, did you have to drill all-new holes? If so, how did you locate it? 2) Would it have been simpler to get the e=brake cable from the donor? I'd assume it connects at the back the same? 3) Are the 4 wheel drive shift bezels interchangeable? My '96 has SelectTrak (Full Time 4WD option). The '99 console I can get doesn't. The simplest fix would be to just use the 4WD shift bezel from the '96 console in the '99 console.

I do as well. My XJ came with a newer console already and the original was gone...I’m going to have to track down an original.

You don't need to pop out the spring loaded button before popping off the shift handle.

My 99 XJ has been my daily since 2003. The only nice thing about my center console vs the 84-96 center console is mine was made with cup holders. You obviously bought the cup holder accessorie for yours so why go through all that hassle putting in the 97-01 center console. I personally think the interior of the 84-96 looks just fine the way it is. If you're happy with it that's all that matters.

What was your solution to the gap under the dash? Have any pictures or did you just leave it be? Your Jeep ended up looking amazing by the way. Hope it went to a good home.

to take off the shifter handle it is easier to just sit in the back seat and put it in low and pull back on the handle it will come right off

Lol, the '96 console actually looks alot better. It's designed better. Don't know why you'd want to change it in the first place. I just don't get it. Good info tho. Think I'm going to look for a '96 console to go in my '98 xj.

i have a 95 and a 99 cherokee, i prefer the 95 due to more storage, only thing good about my 99 is the cup holders, other than that, i hate the lack of storage

Parrish Lee the 95 i have has storage under the glove compartment, another cubby hole under the stereo and stuff, cubby's on the doors, and a whole console on the ceiling, and a cubby under the ebrake. all that storage is non existent in my 99 sport.

Okay, question. I don't and have never owned a Cherokee, but I'm looking to buy one. What is/was wrong with the original console? It looked fine to me. Just a different design.

+Sandro Arcos first you have to take off the steering column cover..then remove the dash bezel. its the one big dash piece.. then you will be able to remove the AC controls..

Kevin Bishop yes it will be the same only the shifter bezel will be diffrent. To accomodate for the shifter boot.

I mounted the the cb with the mounting bracket and hardware. The cb antenna is mounted by the hatch. There is a cb antenna mount that sandwiches between the hatch and quater panel..

its a cb radio, and by the looks of it I believe it said cobra? which is a brand

I like the older one causs of center console space but the newer one looks more sleek

you can cut the whole out on the the new center console. I didn't do it I just manually adjust the the mirrors.

yeah sweet, cos like you, I had the aftermarket cup holder which was great, except, it made it harder to use the e-break. Just need to fab up a box to turn that empty space between the console and the dash into a storage, or just get some check-plate and Velcro to make a cover :)

If you have a 2001 cherokee it should already have this center console in it.
