1996 Ford F-150 No Start with ScannerDanner-EricTheCarGuy

1996 Ford F-150 No Start with ScannerDanner-EricTheCarGuy
ScannerDanner and EricTheCarGuy are back again this time solving a no start condition on a 1994 Ford F-150. This time I wouldn't let him use his fancy expensive scanner and to be honest it was no problem for ScannerDanner because he understands the fundamentals. It's really great to work with ScannerDanner because he knows so much about these systems and how they operate, I learn something every time we work together. So please enjoy this no start diagnosis with nothing more than a spark tester, a DVOM, and a test light.

I like the fact they show you different ways to diagnose problems if the more advance tools aren't available, understanding systems and how they work are your best tool you can have. Your approach with that knowledge determines your next move. Throwing parts at an issue can be time consuming and a waste of money if the problem isn't solved.

Thank you Scanner and Eric... This was the problmen with my F-150. Left me high and dry in the Home Depot parking lot.Un-fortunently I could NOT dissamble the distributer in the parking lot... :( Couldn't figure out how to do it. So I bit the bullet and replaced the whole distributor. But I did have an extra pick up cable an got my spark when connected...Thank you so much for getting me in the correct spot.

Hello Eric, saw this great video with you and Paul. My 1990 Ford F150 4.9 is giving me problems to start it in the morning, I have to pump it some 35-50 times before I could start it, after that it would start with no problems. Before it would start with no problems, but now this is what I need to fix. Thank you.

Id like to say thank you for this video! I have a 92 ford f150 4.9 that I had a no spark about a month ago. I threw parts at it. New pcm ,new fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator ( dont ever buy a harbor freight fuel pressure tester) fuel filter, and then finally a new icm. Well it died on me a few weeks later.. no spark. Well instead of throwing parts at my truck you helped me diagnose it properly. Failed brand new icm. Thank you sir!!!! Also icing on the cake is that you're a brother in Christ! Definitely subbing!

Great video. I like the reference to the hall effect switch even though it may be intimidating to novice mechanics, it is necessary to talk the talk and really, to further their research into components. The conversation relating to test lights and simple stuff as where to place ground leads is invaluable. Keep up the good work.

I have a 96 F-150. Same situation. The wire from the ECM to the distributor is a shielded wire that after time will break down (shielding) due to heat. When it does the wire shorts out and there is no signal -- no ignition -- no start. This is a Ford service bulletin that the Ford dealer that charged me $600.00 missed. It was an independent garage that finally fixed it.

Brother Brian, You have the best video that I have found online, but I'm still missing something in this very easy chore that wasn't a problem for me at all just a few years ago when I changed my 94 4x4 with the single rear tank with ease. A few years later, now at the rotten age for me it seems of 60 I'm struggling something horrible at changing both pumps in my 1995 2wd due to a crazy array of wire colors (that Ford went way overboard with) making color coding this task completely impossible. In short, I've watched your video a couple of times now, and it's hit me right between the eyes that the best way to figure this out is to set the new and old pumps with the cover for the 4 wires in the same directions and to lay the pin connectors in also the same direction as one to the other old vs new then pay close attention as to clockwise or counter and solder the new pigtail on quick before we change our minds . I think this would make a much better schematic and get the task over with way quicker than even talking about wire colors that came off of a Ford assembly line where job one must have been to be color blind from the get go . As for the 2 fuel lines go if someone is able to mix those up, the pump needs to be exchanged for another one because it's totally f cked up if that's a possibility. Thanks for taking the time to make the video young feller. I appreciate it

I used that trick way back in 1985 I had a Chrysler laser 2.2 turbo . It started by losing power but it would restart . I started by removing the hall effect and on a 2.2 engine its 5 min job. I ran a metal strip and it would only make a weak spark . So even if it gives a spark it may be a low spark . I learned it from my day in the 70s . He was a master mechanic.

I would like to share with you on ford no starts, Turn key on and look for a check engine light. Then crank engine over, if the computer is receiving a PIP/crank signal the check engine light will go off. Also you could check injection pulse with a noid lite. no spark no injection pulse-look for PIP signal missing.

Awesome video on electrical diagnosis. Wanted to share a recent rv rental incident that i touched positive terminal to nearby metal in trying to reset the computer for check engine light. After that millisecond touch and a spark the rig won’t start. It’s a 2013 Mercedes sprinter 3500 diesel. I was told the communication and fuel module fried. I wish I could diagnose and fix the no start. Had to rent a car and leave rv there for towing to a dealership. Electrical diagnosis and fix seems crucial for mechanics.

I just dropped in a new distributor (complete) in my 92 Ranger 3.0. This truck has been experiencing intermittent stalling/starting problems. 1 week ago I could not get a spark - 2 days later, sparking but stalling. At that time I ordered the distributor because the old one looked corroded inside with what looked like very small metal particles and rust. Also, 1 week ago I installed a new coil. The vehicle a few days before that also got a new ignition module. Anyways, after I dropped in the distributor, it started fine, nice cold idle - about 1200 RPM, then dropped down to about a grand. Then it started stalling after about 3-4 minutes of warmed up idling. After a while, it shut off with no spark again. Ugh! I have a code regarding the engine coolant sensor out of range, so I have a new one I will drop in tomorrow, but we know of course that this sensor should not shut off the ignition's capacity to deliver spark. I very appreciate this video - I'm suspecting that there might be a grounding problem with the ignition module (I've heard that others had this problem). My ICM is mounted up near the radiator. Any tips would be greatly appreciated (and thank you for your informative videos - backyard mechanics ain't what they used to be!)

Great VId Eric, I had a 1980 F150 4x4 long time ago...that I also ran into a no start issue on a very cold day in Idaho. We drug it in out of the cold so to warm it up to figure out what the prob was....long story short it ended up sheering the roll pin on the distributer gear so causing a no spark issue.

Excellent captivating video. I learned a great deal. I like the format of two smart guys playing a role. It appears that you didn't really know what the broken item was ahead of the video, so it was especially convincing.

I know this is a older video, but it is a really good video on trouble shooting a ford. I think it just might help me get mine to start.

These old school Fords are still on the road. Two of them are parked next to my garage. Replaced a MAF sensor on one of them after watching many videos on you-tube today and now it runs great. Still must do a test drive but think it was the correct diagnosis. I have a Action CP9690 scanner on order from Amazon so I can check to see if it is the fix.

Regarding the erroneous reading as a result of the low battery w/cranking issue, could you not switch the meter to the AC scale thereby circumventing the low battery DC jumping all over the place issue. Most multimeters on the AC scale are somewhat accurate up to about 1KHz. Since you're not really concerned with the absolute accuracy of this reading, I'm thinking the AC scale would have produced a more meaningful result (probably showing very little variation) as it doesn't respond as quickly as the DC scale. Just a thought. Might just give it a try sometime.

Its a reluctor ring or wheel (just to put the name out there). Used in all kinds of parts. Distributors, cam and crank sensors, transmission speed sensors, ABS sensors, and old-school computer mouses with the ball. They can be used by way of magnets or light. Very cool vid.
