1995 - The Net - Trailer

Angela Bennett is a computer expert. This young and beautiful analyst is never far from a computer and modem. The only activity she has outside of computers is visiting her mother. A friend, whom she's only spoken to over the net and phone, Dale Hessman, sent her a program with a weird glitch for her to de-bug. That night, he left to meet her and was killed in a plane crash. Angela discovers secret information on the disk she has received only hours before she leaves for vacation. Her life then turns into a nightmare, her records are erased from existence and she is given a new identity, one with a police record. She struggles to find out why this has happened and who has it in for her.

    Everyone is saying it's dated, which I agree with, but I think the underlying message is still relevant today, probably more so than in 1995. We're more connected with the internet than ever before and share more information online than ever before. It reminds me of a line from the movie, "There's a little electronic shadow on each and everyone one of us just begging for somebody to screw with." That wouldn't have worried many in 1995, but today it's common place.

(To prevent things like this from happening or more to the point to prevent chaos after a loss of all electronics in the country) The plane crash couldn't happen as the network for the planes is a closed system. And frankly the stupidity of some of the actions. Oh no, she created a copy of the floppy disk containing are horrible secret, how clever of her and totally not somthing every normal person would do. The movie was pretty much trash. Even the fact that the way to figure out and reach the encoded files was by clicking a clearly visible icon on the bottom right of the screen. If you are younger than 40 its hard to know exactly how prophetic this movie was. When this came out, the technology the movie is based around seemed like an outlandishly bad and overblown sci-fi movie plot. None of this technology existed; nor was it a given that it would exist in the future. It was still just a silicon valley fever dream at best. There weren't any publicly (or privately) available wireless internet connections, no infrastructure, no hardware and no software developed that would support a narrative like this in any real way. By the time eagle eye came out is was a much easier narrative to swallow, we could at least see where the tech was headed. But at the time this movie was so far out that it became a joke.

    Can't find a more painful scene than Dennis and Sandra in the hospital being affectionate. And his character is a whopper to choke on. Not just inappropriate patient relationship and adultery, but complete and giddy ablivion to Angela's severe state of fear.

    I wasn’t on America online in 95…but I was by 98. I remember thinking (yeah I was one of those computer dumb aol users) how it was so cool I accessed a world everyday that most Americans or the world haven’t. I loved this movie…saw it yesterday and can’t believe I didn’t know about it. We definitely had computers in the house as far back as 91…no modem…but not sure how far back…but I know no later than 91

    In the US, title insurance companies, such as First Financial, keep electronic records of who owns what house, land, "real estate" property. And if somebody had access to those electronic records, could they not steal another's house?

  • @Lowlightt

    @Lowlightt

    No because not only do you have a physical title for a house, the US keeps phsyical titles on hand as well. 90% of the US document infrastructure today is still hard copies with digital copies on hand as well.

    This Movie just made a list of the 15 most cringe-worthy tech movies ever made. I haven't seen this movie since I rented it at Blockbuster back in 95. The movie did make money at the box office. They may have spent most of the budget on computers that cost 5 to 10 as much as it would have cost today, unless it was Mac, it would cost the same amount today.
