1995 Hyundai Lantra (Elantra) 1.6 GLS Automatic Walkaround - Lloyd Vehicle Consulting

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Two days before the national lockdown, I headed off on a secret mission to Surrey to film a very rare first generation Hyundai Lantra (known as the Elantra in many other countries). Be prepared for Mitsubishi engineering, missing interior trim, bumper holes, lack of knowledge about specific engine power outputs and marginal incompetence. Nothing untoward, then!
As an independent vehicle consultant, I take potential buyers through the whole car buying process from choosing a make and model to a vehicle handover and road tax. In addition to information on this service, I also have a selection of written and video reviews of cars that I have owned, hired, borrowed or have somehow come into my possession. Please use the Contact Me page on my website to get in touch, visit my Facebook page for latest updates and share this video if you like it! Thank you for watching.

    Love the Lantra font, reminds us of Stargate Atlantis, like Kia it’s crazy how these brands have changed in a relatively short time.

    Great walkaround! These were one of those cars that although never the darlings of motor magazines were perfectly decent well enough made cars for people that just wanted a good value comfortable and reliable car.

    Oh, I don't think Hyundai and Kia were taken that seriously by motoring journalists for maybe ten years after this car was made, but in truth, many people just went out and bought them, ignoring the mediocre reviews, and enjoyed reliable and well equipped transportation.

    The Lantra was on my list when I bought a 1995 Astra 1.4. The Vauxhall dealer was closer and the Hyundai dealer was not interested in giving a good value for my trade in because the Accent and Lantra were flying out the door. All were better equipped than the equivalent Ford, Vauxhall, Renault, Rover or Peugeot. The Lantra estate was a very sexy, curvy piece of design, especially in dark metallic blue. Great walkaround, many thanks for the memories.

    Yes, the midrange car having all this equipment would have been extraordinary at the time! I don't imagine they had to give you much of discount if they could sell most of the cars that they built without much incentive. The Lantra Estate which appeared with the Mark II did look quite nice, didn't they?

    Nice, my late father had one in green. The engine wouldn't turn over unless you put the clutch to the floor. Which he forgot to tell me. {Does Hyundai still do this?} It was a very reliable car, my father was so impressed. He bought a sporty looking Hyundai Coupe next. {at the age of 75}

    Yes, that would have been an American market quirk, which the Koreans seemed to be quite keen on for some reason... Most manual cars need to have clutch pressed to start these days, but my SsangYong takes it one stage further by requiring both the brake and the clutch to be pressed. I would love to see one of these in green, hoping to have a Coupé on the channel at some point.

    The era when Hyundai really became good. The early 90s was the time when Hyundai moved on massively, and by the mid 90s, they were definitely a solid mid range car manufacturer. The Mitsubishi engines were top quality, along with the beta series Hyundai made. I do have a preference for Japanese cars as they were extremely well engineered in the 80s and 90s, but the Japanese engineering definitely got passed down to Hyundai. The lantra was and still is comfortably better than the Cavalier/Vectra, Escort and able to compete with the Mondeo. They are still good cars as of today. Hyundai are now the kings of the mid range and give Audi and Mercedes a run for their money.

    Well, if you liked this video, you will find a full review of a slightly different first generation Lantra on the No Budget Reviews playlist! Certainly, the Mitsubishi engineering that was used in this car and also the early Protons was very reliable indeed. These days, Hyundai and Kia are some of the most competitive normal cars around, both backed by excellent warranties.

    My parents had this model brand new in 1995. With a special dubbel tinted color. And a subtile spoiler on the trunk with a 3th braking light. It looked so nice. 4 Electric windows. Sunroof and a/c. One thing that wasn’t nice was the 1.5 engine. Loud and slow. But i loved the model

    I had one of these on an M reg. I had it from brand new up to 55,000 miles. The only thing that failed was the gear box (quite a big thing) Had a reconditioned one fitted and got rid of it soon after. The new owner took it up to 167,000 before rust killed it off. Nice video, thank you. Took me right back to see it again.

    @@lloydvehicleconsulting I'll check out your other Lantra video Lloyd. The M reg I had was a manual. Hyundai dealer put a reconditioned gearbox in it for £500 I think it was. This was back in 2001. I really liked that car even though it lacked creature comforts - air conditioning being the main one. I have never had a car without air con since I had that trusty old Lantra. Apart from the gearbox it was a very reliable car. I drove it across Europe down to Greece and back several times. 😎

    Joseph, I have not seen a Lantra (Elantra) of this vintage in a very long time! These were cheap used vehicles, disposable because they were Hyundai. I knew they used Mitsubishi parts when first introduced in the US in 1986, but I did know they were still using Mitsubishi parts when this was manufactured! The interior does remind me of the Elantra GLS of the era, and I believe US versions did have air conditioning. Another brilliant observation and video!

    Well, it is good that we have finally got a car on the channel which you recognise from the American market! Yes, the engines in the first Lantra were all Mitsubishi units, just like all other Hyundais up until that point. I have no doubt that air conditioning would have been expected by most US consumers by this time.
