Toyota was not going after Crown Victoria, but the S class W126.

This car was the reason why Mercedes rushed production on the W140 (which came out in late 1991) The W126 was a nice car but it looked very dated (dates back to 1981) compared to the LS400

Great video :) Many things here are indeed impressive for 1994... but what's even more impressive is that these cars went on sale in late 1989, WITH all those features, and a lot more in certain markets (and many options were available, such as air suspension, telephone system, a better audio system, etc). For example, my MY91 EUDM LS400 does have heated rear seats, rear cup holders (and storage compartment inside the rear armrest/middle console). And for those wondering, the car is called Lexus LS400 globally, except for the JDM version which is called the Toyota Celsior (which seems to have more equipment as standard btw). The car you reviewed, did it have cruise control and electronically manouvered headrests (you never mentioned it)? Interesting to see what differences there are between the EUDM and USDM cars. Also, the transmission has two modes, not three :) Power, and Normal. ECT is just what the button is labeled, it stands for Electronically Controlled Transmission.

Crown Vic is a terrible comparison for a vehicle with $1billion in R&D. The first car with its own seat suspension, first car to offer backlit gauges. The first car to have a transmission ecu communicate with the engine ecu to retard engine timing for a split second for smoother shifts. Tinted colored glass specific to the color of your vehicle. First vehicle to offer in cabin cd changer and would go on to be the first to offer sat nav as standard. I’m missing a ton of info as well. The crown Vic was a planet away from this car and three decades later it still looks and wears better than a crown Vic could ever wish to. Cool vid though I own a 2nd gen ‘96 black on black and it is simply timeless.

I strongly disagree, the LS400 is just a Panther with more gimmicks. That's right, all the stuff you mentioned is great but it's just gimmicks so don't act like it turns the LS400 into a completely different vehicle. At the end of the day, they're both comfortable land yachts with the same specs and same overall driving experience. Interior quality is better on the Lexus, obviusly, but that doesn't change the fact that they're similar cars.

@@galil_6863 having driven both cars I can see how one could assume they’re similar, but really they are not. Especially once you start cruising over 100mph. They’re worlds apart. I wouldn’t do 120 in a crown Vic nearly as competently, safely, or comfortably. My point is the crown Vic wasn’t designed to compete with the best Germany had to offer. The Lexus LS400 certainly was. And it’s quite apparent to anybody who has spent time in either car, that the more substantial, capable, and better designed of the two is definitely the LS. In terms of ride comfort they may seem similar to the uninitiated, but trust me the ls400 was a planet away from the crown Vic and STILL is.

@@galil_6863 also those gimmicks you speak changed the way cars were built and manufactured. Gimmicks often have no real value in the grand scheme of things. Not the case with the ls400 it set trends that are still being followed to this day I think you should familiarize yourself with the definition of a gimmick.

I've studied a lot about the LS400 and never knew you could flip a switch to disable the key fob, that's really cool! It's still one of my dream cars, I want this and an NB Miata, and that will be my dream car collection

ls400 were highly customizable from the dealers. The 1uz is actually limited in its rpm. It could rev higher but you're out of the power band.

I want one so bad but the running costs are quite high her in germany I would need to pay around 1300 to 1600€ per year for insurance plus 270€ tax plus it has low gas mileage and gas is kinda expensive here Now as it is i could afford that BUT i still have 2 registered motorcycles and i dont want to sell them so all together its too much and that makes me sad

The Crown Victoria wasn’t the competition to this car. The competition to the LS400 was the BMW 7 series, Mercedes S class and the Jaguar XJ6 at the time. Equipped like those cars but priced closer to a Cadillac STS of the era.
