1993 | PHIL DONAHUE SHOW - "Catholic Priest Sex Abuse" PART ONE

The now historic Phil Donahue Show broadcast of March 1993, sets the stage for the dramatic revelations about the Catholic Church clergy sex abuse scandal. Donahue was on top of this issue from the very beginning, broadcasting his first show on the topic in 1988. This 1993 show features Toledo, Ohio victim Barbara Blaine who had already founded SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests. Jason Berry had recently published his groundbreaking investigative report on early abuse cases then surfacing around the country, including the story of Louisiana priest Gilbert Gauthe. Fr. Andrew Greeley talks about his new novel, "Fall From Grace" which centers around a priest immersed in sex allegations in his own parish. This program was broadcast 9 years before The Boston Globe exposed the decades-long sex crimes cover-up in the Archdiocese of Boston, MA.

Teach your children to question authority and that adults are NOT always right. And that if something doesn't feel right to them then it ISN'T!

Phil Donahue, the greatest talk show host ever. He covered tough topics with intelligence, objectivity, and bluntness. I miss his show even to this day.

+Cameron Menezes 16.5% in Boston MA. "We’re not all like that. Say if there’s two hundred million priests in the world, and 5% of them are pedophiles- that’s still only ten million!" Fr. Ted Crilly, 1952-1998

Speaking as one who grew up catholic, I hope you know that there is a BIG difference between being a catholic and being one who believes in and follows the teachings and examples of Christ. Once you begin reading the Bible for yourself and exploring the history of the talmidim (disciples) of Christ versus the sanitized history of the church as fed to us in catechism- the difference becomes startlingly clear. The Roman cath. system departed from the teachings of Yeshua the Messiah shortly after Constantine and engaged in rampant syncretism- bring false beliefs, rituals, and practices into itself in order to incorporate the pagan masses and make them into "christians"- something that no one but God can do. No one can come to Christ unless God Himself draws him, spiritually. Yeshua said that. His name means "salvation" in Hebrew. You should get to know Him. If you are truly a person of faith and you want to really KNOW your God and Savior, find a copy of "The Complete Jewish Bible"- compiled by a Jewish Christian named David Stern. It will blow your mind and make you wonder why today's Christian churches totally ignore the Hebraic roots of our faith. The ritualism of the old churches, and the fake showmanship/hypocrisy of many new churches are awful and disconcerting. Very few people really "get it" these days in matters of faith, because it often takes hard work, research and discernment to discover the gemstones of truth amid all the dirt and pieces of colored glass; generally, people don't question what they have been taught in matters of faith. It can be very uncomfortable and put you at odds with those you love. But when He calls you, draws, you, summons you- it is impossible to ignore. Best wishes to you.

The damage done by the church is beyond repair. The loss of followers will ultimately fracture the strength of the Catholicism, not destroy it. And thats the problem.

This has been going on for years and still we have yet to see all those involved in these sexual assaults of children been brought to justice and over the years these crimes did not stop. Great show....I saw it live when this show was first aired on the Phil Donahue Show. The Vatican from Rome was on his series of shows and confirmed that all the information was true and that the Church in Rome was working on taking care of this problem with their priests. Shocking information within these Phil Donahue shows. A must see. Thanks psaviano for hosting this video: PHIL DONAHUE SHOW - "Catholic Priest Sex Abuse" March 1993 PART ONE

i lived a very sheltered life yet I didnt think priests were looked up to in catholic families, like she said .....women should trust their inner instincts and know when something is NOT RIGHT. The feeling tells you... Maybe it was another time....Now we need to teach our children..BOYS AND GIRLS what to expect..Dont trust anyone so easily and to listen to their instincts . Parents first and foremost should make the atmosphere conducive so their children can come to them anytime and talk on any subject without fear of rebuke or ridicule.

Are you nuts?!? "Just ask them to leave the priesthood....." ??? Is that what you think they deserve....to just be "asked to leave" the priesthood? Because they are "sick" ?? Open your eyes, Jessie. They are not "sick"- they are the worst kind of EVIL. The kind that comes masquerading itself as an angel of light. These lying, manipulative, self-gratifying, faith-destroying RAPISTS should ALL have been turned in to the police and PROSECUTED!! There is no separate law for men just because they happen to be "priests" !! The police departments in hundreds of cities and towns are complicit in covering up the sexual abuse committed by clergy- and should be held accountable for bowing to the wishes of all the priests, bishops, arch-bishops and cardinals who pressured them to release these evil creeps into "their care". Jesus himself gave clear warning to anyone who would damage the faith of "even one of these little ones...."- He said that it would be better for them to have a millstone tied around their necks and be tossed into the sea than to face God's wrath for hurting children. At the very least, they belong in the toughest prisons this country has- where their names, faces, and the nature of their crimes are revealed to all their fellow inmates. Prisoners, unlike the cursed catholic hierarchy, know how to deal with PEDOPHILES.

i was schooled in a convent from the time I was 7 to 16.. when we reached 13 our female teachers stopped giving up religious education in our classrooms . Every monday we had to go to the church adjacent to our school where an old priest would speak to us on serveral subjects. On one occassion he went over theline and was speaking on several sexual and inappropriate subjects. I wanted to run away and go and tell my principal or teacher but I was too scared. He was quite famous in the church and in the district. I waited for courage to bring me to tell someone but in the meantime someone else did bring the matter up...Because from that day we didnt have to go for religious classes with that priest anymore. I was so thankful...I was 13 then and i think quite mature in thinking ..to know what the priest was saying was WRONG...I cant understand why this girl let it go for so long and did not do anything...I am not pointing the finger...just need to ask why....glad she has made it and is helping others..

I've never understood when these people gained the power/dominance/control that they've been viewed as having. I still after 42 years still can't understand the rational of priests & nuns preaching love, respect, care, etc. on Sunday but then during the school week that they'd (and were allowed to) beat the h*** out of kids who misbehaved. Does something seem contradicting there? These men have had the same power passed on from the Apostles that Christ gave them, but none of them could ever walk on water either. It often seems that even today some people envision that though. They seem to look at priests, nuns & bishops like they ARE on some higher pedestal as far as expecting them to be able to perform miracles similar to GOD. (Same as people looked at doctors for generations -that they were above other men because they knew more about how to heal people. True, but they're STILL man. They can't be expected to create light out of literally nothing either.)

Steve Dogan While I'm glad that the number of priests that abuse is much lower than people love to claim, it's still makes me sick to my stomach that it has happened. What people should understand is that the Church never made an effort to cover these abuses, however from the 60's to the 80's, their process of addressing it wasn't good (though it was the common universal advice from counselors that was also passed over to public schools that also abused). Cardinal Ratzinger (later to be Pope Benedict XVI) stomped his foot eventually and said "These abuses have not only gone on long enough, but the way we're going about addressing them is also a real problem. No more of this." And sincere, honest bishops began cracking down on them. So the Church always had a problem with this -- it has always only been dissident priests who caused this scandal.

Please visit my Facebook page dedicated to Father Matthew Hillyard at facebook.com/moonracer07/?pnref=story He is currently stationed at Our Lady Of Good Counsel in Vienna, Va. and is under investigation for sexual harassment which transpired while he was stationed in Camden. Apparently, there have been problems like this with him at other parishes, which his order has done their best to cover up and protect him.
