@@emeyer6963 that's funny, guy I went to HS got that weird purplish red. Parents wouldn't let him get the probe because it was too sporty. I hated on that rich prick so bad for driving a brand new car at 17 years old, lol. He was such a douche, mom and dad wouldn't pay to lower it for him so he put like 200lbs of bricks in the rear floorboard🤣

I remember back in 1995 when I got out of the penitentiary our local Ford dealer in Knoxville TN had a fresh out program where you got a new ‘95 escort with auto and air for $9,995 plus fees. You could use your $100.00 gate check for your down payment. Ford Credit finances the deal and the dealer held the recourse. Thus was a great opportunity to provide convicts with reliable transportation to parole. I remember the commercial saying “This little jewel will get you there and it won’t get you violated.” Unfortunately the program only lasted 3 years.

WOW!. Shocking that a car dealer would do anything AT ALL for someone out of prison let alone putting money where there mouth is like that. Usually they just want to screw everyone. That was pretty cool. Not cool enough to go to prison to get the deal though.

Tool0GT92, No, it means “Grand Touring”. That means a fine ride on long trips but also a good handling car. Ive had the most fun driving less powerful cars with good suspensions such as an 1994 BMW 318i 5-speed. I did add HD Bilstein struts on all 4 corners, and M3 sway bars front and rear! Now having said all this, I did also add an supercharger not turbo from Atlanta Supercharger. This was very streetable but led to instantaneous throttle response even from off idle. Horsepower went from 138 stock to 250 supercharged. THAT shocked a lot of M3 E36 owners! LOL

Eh, it means the sportier trim level. Fast of course is relative. In the early 90's, most mustangs and camaros were 15 second cars. So an Escort GT that could run high 15s was pretty dang quick. For what it's worth, I had an LX-e, the 4 door version of the GT and ran better times in Denver than this test did at sea level. Ran about 1/2 second and 1.5-2.5mph faster than the 99-00 Civic Si did.

Transmission doesn’t slip, the only mechanical problem I had was the engine rough idling, and that was an easy fix, just had to clean out the vacuum hoses. Only problem since is one side of my dashboard lights going out. Other than that, car still runs and drives great 👍

If I am correct, Motor Trend had the Escort GT 5 speed in 91 or 92 doing 0-60 in 7.9 seconds. The reason I remember this is because the Capri XR2 did a similar number at 7.4 seconds. I thought at the time, they had the same engine, but was wrong. After a quick lookup on Google, various reviews show this car doing 0-60 times in 7.9 or 8 seconds.

  • @TheOzthewiz

    @TheOzthewiz

    4 жыл бұрын

The car magazines ALWAYS got better 0-60times than the "regular" publications like Consumer Reports and probably MW. The reason: the factory provided "doctored" versions of "stock" cars to the car magazines so reviews were more "favorable", even the magazine editors admitted that the cars supplied by the factory probably were modified (internally) . For me, the only reviews that I would believe came from Consumer Reports, since their "test" cars were purchased of a dealer's lot just like you or I would purchase. Case in point: back in '80, I read a test of a Chevy Citation X-11 v6 4-speed manual, which appeared in "Car and Driver" that had a 0-60 time of 9.2 seconds. I was so impressed by the performance (seemed like a rocket ship in 1980 for a compact), so I ordered one. After a few "stop light Grands Prix, I suspected that a "stock" X-11 did NOT perform anywhere near that of the C&D test. This was confirmed by a review in Consumer Reports AFTER I had purchased the car, they got a 0-60 time of 12.1seconds!!! As a matter of fact, the C&D 1980 car with 120HP got the SAME 0-60 time as their 1981 X-11 that had 140HP( chevy added dual exhaust, along with higher CR and bigger valves, along with more agressive cam profiles) rated engine. To sum this up, I don't put much faith in the "performance numbers" that the car mags publish because the cars are supplied by the factory to be reviewed by magazines that will be read by millions of car enthusiasts. For me, the only TRUE test will be found in Consumer Reports, on cars that CR has purchased from a dealer's lot!!!

  • @matthewgaines10

@@TheOzthewiz Do you have proof of such an allegation? I think not. Consumer Reports just had less skilled people at performing speed tests. The magazine's tended to have people who knew how to get the most out of vehicle and a launch. Torque braking, dropping the clutch, slipping the clutch, or whatever it took to get the fastest times. Most magazine testers and reviewers actually attended performance driving schools. CR employed engineers and technicians. Few of their staff were actual car enthusiasts. Any joe can verify the numbers on a production car so it was stupid to tamper with cars to produce better numbers.

That back seat was actually useful. On one trip from Saratoga Springs Racetrack in NY to my house in Eastampton NJ, my ex's friends sat in the back seats comfortably. The guy behind me was quite tall and I (the front passanger) had to adjust the seat until my knees were squeezed against the glove box. Not comfortable for a 3 and a half hour 244 mile drive, but the passengers endured the trip nicely. And the passenger seat was comfortable enough for those long vacation trips.

Mazda is definitely my favorite brand...I've owned 10 so far and counting. I like both these and the Tracer (and BG chassis car really), but if I had a choice I'd pick the Protege LX...I always dug it's mini W124 greenhouse. I found it a little odd that they tested the the 1.9 version earlier with the manual and the sportier GT with the automatic...seems kind of backwards to me. It's crazy how much performance the automatic sucked out of it, to the point where the 88 hp CVH with the manual was faster. It's not surprising though, having driven several Mazdas from this era both manual and automatic I can say that the manual completely changes the character of them, moreso than other brands from the era.

I bought the Mazda from my mom and the escort blew up it's automatic transmission so my sister gave me that car. I removed the escort GT engine, wheels, brakes, exhaust, struts, radiator and computer. Then I installed all of it on the protégé, it drastically improve their car and I still have it. The biggest performance upgrade I did to the Mazda was at one time I removed all of the interior except for the dash steering wheel and two front seats. One of my favorite cars to drive around in to this day. It's nice to have a car that you know completely inside and out, it's been a few years since I've driven it on the street, it just sits in the garage. I'm still on the lookout for a diesel Ford escort, if anybody knows of one for sale let me know.

I bought a red Escort GT from the used Ford dealer lot, when I was 20. I tricked it out a little bit, free flow wide exhaust, KnN cold air intake, low profile Firestone firehawk 2 tires, smoke tinted windows and a monster car stereo. Was the most fun I ever had with a compact economy car. Wasn’t overwhelmingly fast but did just fine, it wasn’t the coolest car on the road, but when you’re 19-20 years old in 1997 it was cool lol. I miss that car, Ford did well with the Mazda engine, and it being a 5 speed manual made for fun summer days

My ex had a 1995 green Escort GT. We drove it on very long trips from South Jersey to the Bronx, Nassau Long Island, Saratoga Springs NY, Ocean City MD, Wildwood, NJ,, Baltimore, and so on. I was considering getting one, but when I test drove it, I did not like the seats or the feel of the car. So I leased a black Geo Prizm (nicknamed Black Sunshine) and it was a terrific car. It was a poor man's Corolla (which happened to be my last two cars). Still, that green Escort was very fuel efficient and a reliable car. Nice memories!

Friends made fun of it when I bought it, but there has never been a day that it has failed to fire and get me where I need to go. Dirt cheap insurance, dirt cheap to register and honestly a quirky little car but very pleasurable to drive. Spirited personality comment is one hundred percent spot on, too!

my first car, i got during my junior year in highschool. Don't remember the miles, when my dad's girlfriend passed it down to me, but she must've drove it hard; because the transmission went after graduation, sometime during the hot, hot, muggy summer day in the hampton roads area. Was never the same, and after my dad took it to a backyard mechanic, it just got progressively worse and had to scrap it. This car transported me to my first job, and to and from school and afforded me the luxury to hang out after school and YES, sometimes skip school. The thrill of feeling bad and riding around blasting your favorite music, with fair weather friends, who was just as silly as me to style and profile around a small town during the week around 11am to about 1pm and all the adults looking at you, like you should be in school and fingers and toes crossed that we don't run into someone who knows our parents or grandparents! In archie bunker voice: "Those were the days"!

In fact my parents have kept all their vehicles rust free and they drive them all winter long. Got to wash them once a week during winter more if needed with a under body wash. Wax twice a year. My vehicle now a 08 escape yea has rust but bought it with rust unfortunately. Hard to find a rust free used vehicle.

I ended up buying a used one-owner Mercury Tracer LTS in 2016, in pristine condition. While no rocket in today's market, it was somewhat of a sleeper with the Mazda BP-18 16v motor and surprised many other older compact car drivers on the road. Alas, my niece totaled it while I was away on the road.
