Back when 1600 CC's was enough. This car encompasses what made German cars of this era and earlier great. Americans picture the Autobahns full of Mercedes S classes and Porsches. The reality is that those were way outside the budget of most Germans. Most got by with 1.6 liter and 2.0 liter Ford's, Ooels and VW's, and often even 1500 or even 1300 cc engines. But the engines would be unburstable. A 1600 cc car like this BMW would still be able to cruise down the Autobahn at 4000 rpm, 5000 rpm or more for an hour or two at over 100 mph, without wondering or overwhelming the chassis. Very unlike the American cars of the time.

Careful this doesn’t imply that the size isn’t enough these days. I’m pretty sure with the a class 2.0 - even in normal format - they’re quick enough now. The highest performance 2.0 AMG has something like top end of 400bhp and 500nm torque (at least that’s what I have heard)… erm… something tells me they still are the thing to buy lmao 😂

Lexus fanboys are always trash talk about German cars, they barely give any respect them because they love to trash talk about reliability which German car guys don’t give a crap about. Go read the comments on Doug’s IS500 review and you’ll see Lexus fanboys being toxic all the time. I’m saying this rn, Lexus interiors and tech are absolutely hideous since they are lagging way behind in rivals. I’d rather buy a Mercedes or Audi over any Lexus period. Debadged badge on the left seems like it was a regular ///M badge usual on E30s with M-packages I or II. I have it on my E30 and this was a standard option with those packages. Why was Alpina put on, that's beyond my imagination :) Color and interior combination is just wonderful and cars with such rare combos are really sought after these days here in Germany, no matter what engine. It would be also interesting to say that this 1.6 M40, if original, doesn't even go above 100HP (98HP). M40 was also used in E36 with a slight power bump to 101HP. There were also 1.8L versions of this engine. Given this lowly power figures, it is never too slow. It's featherweight compared to today's BMWs with probably something just slightly above 1200kg full wet.

We had an 318i 2-Door, which was noticeably more agile than the 316i. And it was light: 1050Kgs without driver with 110PS was plenty back then. Good for 195Km/h on the Autobahn and cruised all day at 160Km/h without much ruckus. 0-100Km/h in 10s was'nt bad for the time either and still not bad today.

Those cars got rare even in bavaria, the home sweet home of BMW :) When I was a child my dad drove a red E30 318i Touring :) But please wait with high rpm and full throttle till the engine and engine oil is hot, the aluminium cylinder head can tear easily. Its a problem that has the m20 6-cylinder engine as well.

Lovely little wagon, i would probably give one of my testicals if i could own one like that. Unfortunately even in Germany there are almost no E30s left, it is months (years?) ago since i saw one the last time. Btw: funny to see the original german license plates in the trunk. ERH stands for "Erlangen-Höchstadt" in Bavaria.
