It was Foo Kok Keong who actually paved the way for Malaysia to win the Thomas Cup at the Stadium Negara on 16 May 1992. Kok Keong played perhaps the best match of his badminton career to stun Allan Budi Kusuma 15-6,15-12 thus giving the home team the advantage in the next match the first doubles. It did not come easy.Allan who would win the Olympic gold months later in Barcelona together with his soon to be wife Susi Susanti,was closed to forcing the rubber but Kok Keong kept his nerves to win 15-12.

Unforgettable...still watching in 2021....

I was 32 and working in KL when the Thomas Cup final between Malaysia and Indonesia was played at the Stadium Negara. I was the disappointed thousands who failed to get a ticket for the final on 16 May 1992.Nevertheless I watched the final live on RTM like millions of Malaysians. It was 1-1 when Allan Budi Kusuma and our Foo Kok Keong took to the court for the third game. Earlier Rashid Sidek had to dig in his reserves to beat Ardy Wiranata in three sets.But Rudy Gunawan and Eddy Hartono drew level when they overcame Razif and Jailani Sidek in three games. Now Foo Kok Keong had to win this if Malaysia have to have any chance of winning the Thomas Cup. But it was a hugh sigh of relief when Kok Keong won 15-6 15-12. Every Malaysian badminton fan knew what happened in the next tie.

Kok was a real fighter despite his age. He was given 40/60 to alan but alan had always been dissapointed man when played against rashid and kok keong.

@@fatehiskandar7673 yes age is fast catching up on me.Once you are past sixty you are considered a senior citizen but at the same time all kinds of sickness creep in and you do not feel good. But then in 1992 I was working in KL and making some money too.I tried to get a ticket for the group match between Malaysia and Denmark which the former won 5-0 but all the tickets were sold out. Then in the semifinals I also tried to get a ticket for the China versus Malaysia match but it was also sold out. But I did watch out Rashid Sidek edged out Zhao Jian Hua in the deciding set at 15-12 to put Malaysia ahead. Defending champions this time were without Yang Yang and Xiang Guo Bao both architects of China's hattrick of Thomas Cup wins from 1986-1990 but they still had the mercurial Zhao Jian Hua and the veteran doubles pair of Li Yongbo and Tian Bingyi. But to our relief we won to make the final.

Fateh Iskandar had to be contented to watch the semifinal live on RTM after the disappointment of not having a ticket for the semifinal at Stadium Negara.

Was in the front row to the right of his court watching him playing that time. He won his match against Alan was the turning point as the Indonesia team thought Alan, the newly crowned Olympics gold medalist could surely win. When Fkk won and brought the score to favor Malaysia team 2 - 1, that when our 2nd double Cheah SK/ Soo BK with the overwhelming support inside Stadium Negara clinched the winning score. Had Fkk lost, our 3rd single will have difficulty task to beat Joko suprianto who was in good shape that time.

Although Alan lost here to Foo Kok Keong, he would go on to win the biggest prize in badminton when he grab the gold medal at the 1992 Olympics a few months later. Malaysian badminton went downhill after this Thomas Cup win mainly because the players were too pampered when they were each given millions of ringgit, houses and even land. Now it is year 2020 and it's been 28 long years since the 1992 Thomas Cup final.

If Foo Kok Keong had not won his singles match with Indonesia's Allan Budi Kusuma the outcome of the 1992 Thomas Cup final at the Stadium Negara would well have gone in Indonesia's favour as Joko Suprianto would be a sure bet to win the deciding and fifth tie against Kwan Yoke Meng. We have to thank Kok Keong for his straight sets win of 15-6,15-12 paved the way and spurred Soo Beng Kiang and Cheah Soon Kit to go all out to beat Rexy Manaiky and Ricky Subagia for Malaysia's winning point and the Thomas Cup. It did not come easy for Kok Keong as he had to battle it out and fight for every point.But when he led 13-12 and scored another to lead 14-12 Kok Keong was well on course for victory.

Many members punched above their way that year. Rashid beaten Zhao in SF was also a major upset as Zhao was consider the best player in the world that time. We got lucky their best player Joko was 3rd single, paired up against weakest Msian single.

Foo Kok Keong did make the final of the All England the previous year but lost to Indonesia's Ardy Wiranata who lost his first singles tie to Rashid Sidek in the 1992 Thomas Cup final.

Malaysian Foo Kok Keong was a late bloomer in the sport. He played an invaluable winning role in the Thomas Cup team's success in 1992. He has a never-say-die attitude on court. His opponent here is Alan Budi of Indonesia who went on to win the Olympic Gold later that year!

( both have never say die attitude , both have solid defense and good coverage !!) In the past if chinese player like zhao jianhua or danish player like paul eric wants to be a champion in one tournament They have to deal with atleast 3 powerful indonesian or malaysian players To bad most indonesian or malaysian rememeber alan budi kusuma or rashid sidek more than fo kok keong and ardy wiranata !!

Actually, the 1970s were Indonesia's most glorious badminton golden era led by their superb icon Rudy Hartono and others like Muljadi, Ade Candra-Christian Handinata,TjunTjun-Johan Wahyudi and many others. Malaysia, Denmark and others were no match. It was in the 1980s and 1990s that Malaysia led by their late Head coach, Punch Gunalan, and the emergence of the Sideks - Misbun, Razif-Jalaini, Rashid- started to see revival in their fortunes.

I agree. Fierce rivalry between Malaysia and Indonesia. Malaysia had Rashid and Foo while Indonesia had Ardy, Alan, Joko and Hermawan.
