Sean Kelly. An absolute legend of the sport. I still love listening to his analysis during Grand Tours on Eurosport.......

Here from the GCN video what a monster Kelly was

Can remember watching this live on Eurosport , Argentin thought he,d won (?) Kelly`s effort was stunning . .even the crowd at finish line became `hushed` Kelly said he was `buggered` as he latched on to Argentin. .BUT a few moments gave Kelly the `Recovery` he needed to out sprint Argentin!! One of Kelly`s greatest wins . . .Proper Hard Man of cycling. . .

This a fantastic finish from the King, and Duffers' commentary is wonderful. I can't stop coming back to watch it.

Lovely to hear Dave Duffield , he was my favourite.

God save the King (Kelly)!. One of the greatest riders ever.

No matter how many times I watch this over the years, the commentators, "Kelly is back with a bang and this lot down likewise with a bang" always gets a laugh out of me. Hilarious.

Boyer tried to get away from Fondriest and Museeuw, then Argentin blew their asses up proper and kept attacking..Then the legend, Raul Alcala came up and applied more pressure... Moreno Argentin held fast and the only one's that could follow him, sort of were Fondriest, Sorenson and Kelly... Then with only a 15" gap, Kelly jumped out in front of the chase group.. chased Argentin down and at the last km, it was mano y mano for a sprint, and Kelly dominated Argentin; who was clearly too spent from being on a solo breakaway for the last 10 km's or so...

Kelly was a much better finisher in one day races than at stage races. This is not to say he's not one for stage races finishes (x5 at the TDF, more than this at la Vuelta), but in a situation like here, he rarely lost.

Kelly in descent has got revenge of all the moto in the front offering their slipstream to Argentin..

Kelly wearing a hard shell helmet, maybe a first. I think he knew a fast descent was needed. Great finish for Kelly.

A big bonus was on offer from the manufacturer if he won a race wearing that helmet. He only put it on later in the race.

IIRC, the Motorola rider who crashed was Max Sciandri, who wasn't wearing a helmet, and hit his head on the asphalt, resulting in a pretty bad concussion that took him some time to heal from.

actually I think they modulated your speed a little better than the typical Campy SR calipers--less likely hood of a lockup. The Shimano rubber blocks could stop you on a dime.

Il a finit 2x 4ème du Tour, gagné 7x Paris-Nice, plusieurs courses par étapes montagneuses, toutes les classiques au moins 1x... seul un ignare s'étonnera qu'il a remporté la Vuelta!

La vidi in diretta, Argentin attese Kelly per giocarsi la volata per paura di essere sorpreso nella parte pianeggiante, col senno di poi se avesse tirato fino al traguardo forse avrebbe vinto.

Not dismissing safety factors, but cycling was so much more photogenic before big goggles helmets and carbon everything.

Kelly wasn't known for descending but pulled it out there , brilliantly timed. Excellent. Heard he got helmet from team car as a one off for the descent. Argentin must be still peed off today loosing a classic in such a way. When pro's rode classic bikes and they were men not big girls blouses using micro gears.

One of the great examples of how effective EPO was, thanks for sharing

Quand on perd, c'est qu'on n'a pas gagné, c'est tout! Kelly était bien placé, a fait l'effort au bon moment, a tenu compte de ses adversaires... et a gagné, rien d'autre à dire!

Great film, if the commentator had said nothing - what a pain compared to Phil Liggett.

I ALWAYS remember Kelly ALWAYS sitting on the wheel of some other rider....., NEVER taking a lead................................
