As good as this W140 S Class is, there is one problem area with the 1992-early 1996 models; the biodegradable materials Mercedes insisted on using for the upper engine wiring harness. After a certain number of miles and/or years, the insulation inside that wiring harness flakes off the copper wire and can cause some wires to short out against each other and then your engine can just quit cold turkey; which can be a safety hazard if you’re driving on a freeway off ramp. If you have a W140 with a flaking wiring harness, STOP DRIVING IT until you get it fixed. Otherwise, the W140 is a terrific car.

Beautiful car, I am the happy caretaker of the 1990 W126 420SEL my parents bought 32 years ago. I’m glad mother decided not to trade the W126 for the S420 she saw in 1998. The “using recycled plastic parts” didn’t impress me LOL. However, I’m not a W140 fan I respect the vehicle and the owners who do enjoy them. :)

WOW. The things that motorweek said about this car in this video are remarkable. Coming from John Davis, that is VERY high praise indeed, and nothing at all to be taken lightly!

Most overrated S-class of all time. These cars aged the worst of any modern S-class. The W126 was built 50x better than any W140 and aged far better in terms of design and durability; a W140 looks 3 times as tired as a W126 given same level of care. That said, the V12's were awesome. Otherwise, you are better off getting a W126 or Lexus LS400 of the same vintage.

I own one of these beasts and I have to agree with you on this one, but I will say I’m thoroughly impressed by the performance of the vehicle. For its time it was a pretty quick vehicle. I own a 1993 Mercedes’ 500sel and they are faster than the late 90’s gt mustangs.

I will always admire the imposing, bluntly-authorative road presence of the W140 that so many later S-classes lacked, but it is quite telling how I tend to see much older W126s still cruising about as daily drivers pretty regularly whereas these W140s positively vanished from the roadways by the mid-2000s. I even still see W220s on a pretty much daily basis and those had a much more (undeservably) horrible reputation compared to this..

@@petercollingwood522 maybe some of it very much deserved (the rust issues and horrible electronic reliability on earlier 220 models is tough to defend), but I always felt the 220 never got enough recognition for it being heaps and bounds ahead of the 140 in terms of its modern (even 'till this day 20 years later) safety and luxury accountrements, efficiency, and overall driving dynamics and performance. They were also far more mechanically robust than the 140 in terms of their powertrains. Both are still excellent machines, however. Just different strengths and weakpoints.
