1991 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce | Retro Review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I'm sure many would agree that there would still be a market for a 2-seater drop top with a lot of old school feels. That's what MotorWeek thought way back in '91 when we tested this 1991 Alfa Romeo Spider.

I love the anti-Alfa knuckle draggers (it's always semi-literates as made obvious by the grammar and style of their posts). From '82 on with the Bosch EFI these cars are dead reliable, especially from '90 with Motronic. I've owned six Spiders and currently have two, an '83 and a '92, 135k and 87k miles respectively. Neither has been rebuilt or restored but both run and look great. Driven regularly but in last three years only thing they've needed is the original clutch master/slave cylinders replaced (age rather than quality issue). Great cars.

I drove one in high school back in 96 97. It was my uncles car and he let me have it as an incentive to do better on school etc.. One day came out of class and someone had hit car while i was in school.. Never got it back after that.. Miss that car to this day.. Felt like a million bucks driving to school in it for a year or two. And yes. Ladies all wanted a ride... So much fun:(

I am the second owner of a 1985 Alfa Romeo Spider. As classic Italian cars go, it is very reliable. If you don't know how to turn a wrench, then stick to your mom's Miata. The shifter position is very comfortable once you get used to it. Alfa's have a soul and are a joy to drive.

Long time ago, I owned a 1986 Veloce Spider sold and serviced by Paul Spruell Alfa located in Georgia. He used to race Alfas back in the day and knew them well. My car, having 60k miles, had just received a new set of cylinder liners and piston rings. Spruell demanded the use of Kendall motor oil and nothing else! Overall, the car was reliable and very nice looking. Whereas the Miata had a too-feminine look to it.

By the time this car was out it was on it's 25th production year, 3rd facelift and quite outdated. Still it marched on to be sold for another 3 years, I don't know many models in the car world that lasted that long. A friend of mine had a 1988 model. It's not such a terrible car as people paint it. Yes, it is not particularly fast, the interior quality is bad, but the mechanicals are good if you service on time and the car is just great fun, and that is the whole point.

My dad had one, pre-facelift, and he confirms that it turned heads and was indeed a hit with the ladies, despite the fact that on a bumpy road, one of the doors opened on its own and the exhaust almost fell off. After a particularly fierce storm, there was also a large puddle inside. Still, even more than 30 years later, people he already knew back then still mention the car to him every once in a while. Despite the love affair with the Spider having been short-lived, it definitely left an impression.

so, the first Alfa's were imported into the States in 1956, it took nearly 40 years for the company 'to be run out of the country' ... way to go 'MURICA!' I think this year is the 50th anniversary of the world not giving a shit about American cars, I mean they are so garbage the only other market they can sell them in is China! :D I remember an episode of the Sopranos where lots of cars were stolen while owners were at a wedding, when the crime was discovered someone shouted 'they left the American ones' XD

What a clueless fool. Alfa was never ‘run’ out of the country the Spider was successful in sales and met its sales goal so did the 164. The 916 GTV and Spider had great reviews by the US journalists in 1995 it was going to be imported as it passed all Federal standards… until Fiat at the last minute decided that it was supposedly going to cost an extra million and pulled the plug for no good reason typical of Fiat to do as they had done the same thing to many other brands they’d bought over the years. The Giulia was also a completely new car that still has bugs to work out as all first year of production cars… journalists also abuse the hell out of the test cars plus citing Consumer Reports is probably the worst source for car reviews.
