I was 13 when I was at that supercross. I was right before the triple where the track came down from the stands. I made it big sign for Damon Bradshaw. After he won he drove his bike and stopped on top of the triple and threw me his gloves. He waved me over to the grandstand where I met him. The goggles he is wearing on his neck he gave to me right after cracking open the champagne.

I was 26. I think I was sitting about in that same area. I might have seen that happen. I can't remember. :)

Because Pontiac was a double race weekend for a long time, it was the stadium that had the most SX races for quite a few years, (including this one I am sure). I would think Anaheim has that record now. I remember the Silverdome as a kid near Detroit, when it was built around 1973-4. We moved away a few hours, and I never went there until I got into MX racing in the mid 80's. I went to quite a few races there and race it in amateur in 88. There seems to been quite a few stadiums we loved being torn down at the same time too. I can't believe my life is longer than the Silverdome's. I chalk it up to more evidence of the decline of the USA. Sad ending indeed.

IMO, the Bubba scrub revolution was pretty much just James, and in the 2-stroke days, (especially on a 125). Some could get close, but I never really saw anybody scrub as low as James could. He was dragging a foot beg on the face before his front wheel left the lip. I think the skill needed was not worth the risk, and then the 4-stroke took over, and killed the rest of that revolution. Throwing it sideways is not the same as scrubbing off 3 feet of elevation. It is the first time in this sport that I have seen a technique that did work, not be used in the near future. It makes me wonder if a young James could win a 250 SX today on his 2-stroke. I bet he would. If he did not get hurt for the series, I bet he would win with the old Bubba Scrub. He himself, after retirement on YT, said it was always a sketchy move.

18.50 I like that fast forward track construction showing 2.5 days of dirt placement, light check, finished and half filled. I liked Savitski's tracks better then the tracks today with the faster (30%) 4-stroke. I don't like rhythm sections today, because they are designed to keep everybody the same speed. These tracks, with the 2-strokes, separated the "talent" more, "for the objective of racing", to see who has the most. I only rode a 4-stroke once, not for long, first YZ400 from 98. I could not imagine how much easier they are today to ride if you don't have to use the clutch. Put today's pros on a track like the old concrete Carlsbad, but with more off cambers that don't rut up, on 2-stroke,--and lets watch the fun. :)
