1990 Breeders' Cup Sprint - Safely Kept -vs- Dayjur

Спорт

The bizarre $1 million Sprint, the first of the day's cup races found Safely Kept luck into victory due to Dayjur jumping a shadow after taking the lead 50 yards from the finish.
Safely Kept sprinted to a clear lead through a first quarter-mile in 21.82. Dayjur, the English sprinter who was racing on dirt for the first time, broke last but then rushed up to challenge her after a half-mile in 44.57.
Far behind them, Mr. Nickerson suddenly reared in the air, throwing Antley to the track. An instant later, Shaker Knit, ridden by Jose Santos, stumbled over Mr. Nickerson and fell. Mr. Nickerson died a few minutes later, having apparently been stricken by a ruptured artery or heart attack. Shaker Knit was removed by horse ambulance and veterinarians were working to save him last night.
Antley suffered a broken collarbone and will be sidelined indefinitely.
In midstretch, Dayjur gradually edged ahead of Safely Kept and looked well on his way to victory. Then the colt suddenly jumped a shadow being cast over the inside of the track by the Teletimer booth on the track's roof. The incident cost him two strides and Safely Kept won by a neck.
Safely Kept, the lone filly in the field, paid $26.40 for $2 to win and completed the six furlongs in 1:09.61 under Craig Perret. The 4-year-old daughter of Horatius, owned by the late Jule Fink's Jayeff B. Stables and trained by Alan Goldberg, has won 19 of 24 career starts.

One of the most tragic breeders cup days ever. Go for wand broke down later that day near the wire in a dramatic stretch duel. Euthenised in front of tens of thousands of people. Heart breaking.

Agreed, and I was there. Tragedy started early with Shaker Knit and Mr. Nickerson. Losing Go for Wand was the final knock-out blow. Haven't been to a Breeders' Cup since.

Two fine racehorses , Dayjur is to this day the quickest racehorse I've ever seen. Ironically and like Dancing Brave his performance in finishing 2nd enhanced his reputation more than winning the race could have done .

"If the race had been twenty minutes earlier, or a half-hour later, that shadow wouldn't have beeen there. It was a one-in-a-million chance. It was a gift. Like looking down on the ground and finding a lotto ticket. But she (Safely Kept) earned it" Craig Perret, Safely Kept's jockey

If horses were trained in the afternoon - which makes sense because the race in the afternoon - they would be accustomed to the shadows and not try to jump them. Of course this can only be done when races are not being run at the same time...

Safely Kept would not switch over to her right lead and Dayjur was able to maintain that head lead because he had changed to his right lead. If she had changed leads in the stretch, like she was supposed to, she would have regained the lead on her own, but the shadow took care of that.

Retired jockey Craig Perret (born February 2, 1951) last April was voted to be inducted to The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. Perret, 68, was North America's leading apprentice jockey by earnings in 1967 (prior to the Eclipse Awards) and won the 1990 Eclipse Award for Outstanding Jockey and in 1998 he received the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award. A native of New Orleans, Perret won 4,415 races in a career that spanned from 1967 to 2005. In 1987, Perret rode Bet Twice to victory in the Belmont Stakes and three years later aboard Unbridled, he won the Kentucky Derby. He won four Breeders' Cup races, including two editions of the Sprint (G1), as well as two runnings of both the Travers Stakes (G1) and Queen's Plate, among others. In 1994 he was inducted into The Fair Grounds Racing Hall of Fame and in 2006 into The Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place at 10:30 a.m., next August 2 at the Fasig-Tipton sales pavilion. The event is open to the public and free to attend. Legendary racecaller Tom Durkin will serve as master of ceremonies. Congratulations Mister Perret! Best Regards from Venezuela.

This was not a good day for the breeders cup raced. Two horses die in this race then the great filly Go For Wand breaks down in the Distaff. A sad day. Safely Kept was fast she ran some very fast times at 6f so glad to see her win, but it would of been better if there hadn't been a shadow. That year there were some great horses both colts and fillys what a year. Saw some really good races in 1990.

This race still thrills me. Safely Kept never lost her action. It is a shame that neither Safely Kept nor Dayjur really passed on their amazing speed and heart to their progeny with any impact. Safely Kept was Maryland's reigning horse of the year, so naturally I rooted for her. Thank God for shadows in the track! BRIAN

Interesting point but I believe that Dayjur wasn’t bred for speed. He was brought back in distance on Willie Carson’s advice and just let go over the 5f. He was a brilliant horseman with an equally brilliant horse.

Dayjur's trainer, the great Major Dick Hern. To quote jockey W Carson: "Dayjur was bombproof at 5f, slightly vulnerable at 6." All speed pedigree. The racing program here in 1990 didn't have many chances for 3 yo only, as it does now. The third horse showed himself a tough as nails 10f horse.

So contrary to what you are saying, there was a lead change. Be that as it may, however, Safely Kept regained the lead (and won) because Dayjur jumped the shadow and lost momentum. The real shame - in the post-race interview, when asked about Dayjur's proclivity for jumping shadows, his rider, Willie Carson, admitted that Dayjur had done the skipping shadows thing before. I don't remember Dayjyr's trainer's name, but shouldn't he have used a shadow-roll? Note the following year's BC Classic winner finishes third here.
