No Griffey, Sheffield, etc. box was searched as in 1989 Upper Deck was an easy pattern with 15 cards in a pack 9 packs per stacks. For example Card numbers. 50, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, etc. in pack 1, pack two it was cards 49 101 201 299 399 501 and so on and since boxes we’re not sealed, most have been searched except for those that just came out of a fresh case.

I don't know that could be the case. The sequencing in the packs that had doubles weren't exact. When he pulled the three Clemens cards, the cards before and after weren't exactly the same. He had a lot of doubles, but if he actually did a checklist of his cards in hand, without having counted all the cards as they were opened, he wasn't going to have three of everything. Case in point he didn't get three Nolan Ryan base cards.

I hate to agree with a Dodger fan about anything, but you are correct, sir. See my above post. Watch the video again. No doubles were pulled from the same pack. Although I have seen it in the 100s of cases of this product I personally opened in order to make individual team sets for Walgreen's. After a while UD just sent us 500 count blocks of individual players. The catch was in order for them to do that you had to buy at least one 500 count box of EVERY card in the set. Including checklists. When Beckett had Junior listed at $25, my boss was selling them by the 1000s for $10. Anyone who lived in the Phoenix area at the time and collected, will know what card shop l am talking about. In short, these are not rare, nonetheless, they are damn cool, and I still have an unopened 500 count box of Junior. As a Dbacks fan I wish I would have gotten Randy too. I wonder how many PSA 10s are in there?

Bluedodgerfan - You are correct. I lost a bet to a customer when these were released. An easier way of explaining it (maybe): For example; you go top left corner, 4th pack down (you can pick any pack in the same stack). If card #3 is in that pack, go up or down a pack and you'll see either card #2 or #4. That will tell you the sequence and you'll get a Griffey within the next pack. I cringe when I see people opening a few packs from a random box. I hope this info is used for the good and not the bad. I hate seeing people get scammed.

Can't beat '89 Upper Deck for a throwback Thursday! Brings back all the feels!
Thank you again! Brings back so many memories of buying and opening a whole box....
It was like 10 year old me all over again. I opened so many of these packs and the card alluded me. You are so right, when these came out they were revolutionary in quality and design. The foil packs were mind blowing to me at that age. These really did influence card quality in the industry. Sorry your luck was bad, but the memories are good!
I always purchased a few packs of these when going into town. Always looking for that Griffey, even though my parents got me one for a gift one year. Still wanted that adrenaline rush of finding one in a pack. Nothing better than getting that feeling.
Love your vintage box breaks! But man, you're so rough when flipping through the cards. Each time, I'm like "eeek!" Lol :)
I remember buying a pack at Walgreens for a dollar and getting a Griffey rc. I couldn't believe it cause was my second one at the time, good times as a kid.
I remember the Beckett price guide back in the days, or shall I say the good ol days, still wouldn't mind breaking an old box or even a new box, just ripping makes my day lol thanks for the video jabs 😎🇺🇸
Even though it wasn't the best box, I still think this is great series. Love hearing and learning about the cards. U r the man Jabsy!
It is always fun to watch an old box being opened.
I really enjoyed seeing the cards and the search. Hearing the history of all the players and card facts/values is my favorite part! Too bad you didn't find more of those star rookies but you usually pull hot fire from your packs! Great video👍
Great box. I love me Some Ken Griffey Jr. Gary Sheffield RC also some cool cards
Great throwback! Same thing happened to me looking for Griffey I found Randy Johnson and Gary Sheffield... Now I'm looking for the Edgar Martinez rookie card!!.
The Nasty Boyz all played amazing. They were a key part in the Reds winning the 1990 World Series. Without them they would not have gone and won. It really goes to show how important good relief pitchers are to the game.
I remember that people knew the sequence where the Griffey’s were in the boxes and pull either the one pack or several packs in that’s area. Till they pulled it, then mixed the packs into other boxes to fill them again. When they first came out I was at a card show and watched a guy pull 3 Griffey’s in one pack. They were stuck together but when he separated them they were fine. The whole show went nuts.

I remember the same thing, there was 1 per box and always in the same corner in the middle. So, dealers were cherry picking the boxes before they put them for sale.
the 89 UD design such classic. great video
All the luck was used up during the live break. Win some, you lose some! Thanks for the throwback! Wish you the best of luck in your recovery!!
It's actually pretty exciting waiting for a Griffey! Untouched for all those years!
I remember paying $2 per pack after pack in late 1989. Finally pulled the Griffey after more than 25 packs opened. Loved it so much that kept and carried it raw in my jacket pocket. Figured as long was gentle with it would not get damaged. Corners did get dinged a bit, but surprisingly no creases. Still give blame to PSA not being around 😜. And ironically the card did take most care of was Gregg Jefferies Topps that same year. Put that in a screw-down holder almost immediately after I pulled from a pack (SMH LOL).
Nice video! Brings back memories of the 90s and how prices having tanked since then
Wow, this takes me back to when I was a kid and collecting!
Thanks for making me get in to collecting first time but had cards for 20 plus years my grandfather had got in the 80s and 90s
It's so awesome that you brought up the Kirk Gibson lengthy at bat against Eck in the 1988 World series. Now what I did notice and I believe your third pack you pulled a Mike Davis, and if it wasn't for my Davis getting on base with that walk and steal second then we may never have that conversation about Gibson
That was fun. '89 Upper Deck was the beginning of a new era in baseball cards.
Still a great idea. Like the vintage box breaks with the big card(s) search factor.
I used to collect Oil Can Boyd when I was younger. I just though his name was cool. Got a chance to meet him at a Rangers game.
Maaaaan! I swear on my moms grave, Im 43 and when UD came out the Griffey RC was always in the front left stack. Sucks when i saw you moved the front packs to the back, got me all dialed up. Man i miss those days

Remember when these came out. It was a big deal. Thanks for the memories. Like to see you do 1993 topps and search for the Jeter.
New sub man! Loving your channel, esoecially the older product vids! 1989 Upper Deck - legendary! They ushered in the "premium" card era and were so ahead of their time. They've always been ahead of the curve in design and photography. I miss them greatly in the baseball, football, and basketball sportscard market. Great stuff man!
Awesome. I remember opening a few of these boxes back in 89. Just subbed.

Impressive packs! wow! two hologram stickers and the hologram on the back of each card! Awesome design! this is some of the best baseball packs ive seen when it comes to overall product in my opinion.
I love this design. I think for 80's cards these are by far the best design out of any of the brands at the time.
Cool video! Always great info about cards & values. Can't believe Griffey didn't show up
I've been collecting YuGiOh card since I was in 1st grade, and thank to your KZread channel, I've gotten into baseball cards. Great videos.
Nice throwback Thursday break bro cool vid and thanks for sharing ur pal, Drew!
I never had any of this set, it wasn't until the 1990 high series packs that any store close to me was selling them, but I certainly remember opening my first pack and being blown away by the photos. They changed the hobby. By the way, I'm guessing AL 5 NL 3 for the All Star Game contest.
Great video, I ripped so many packs as a kid chasing Griffey. I pulled 2. Just went through my cards the other day and submitted both to PSA. With the centering, probably 9 at best. We’ll see.
I was on the edge of my seat on the last pack. I vote for 92 Bowman next week.

Throwback Thursday is cool the next time you should do a slightly newer box like 2000 chrome or stadium club. Those are some of my fave cards!

Ouch! What a bummer. But it was pretty fun watching the drama unfold. I was getting nervous just watching it.....better luck next box!
Always loved that ripken collectors choice card!
Benito Santiago was one of my favorite catchers. Had a rocket for an arm and could throw anyone out from his knees
I've been looking forward to watching this and I can't wait for fan mail Friday
Love the throwback Thursday vids
i love the all star game that John Kruk struck out badly against Randy Johnson
Used to love Upper Deck in the late 80s. Great Cards
Wow that takes me back. Every Friday my friend Ron and I would go to our other friend's house, Tom. He was a HUGE collector, where as I had older cards from way back and I was into it somewhat. But I had a Gretzky rookie. He had a Hank Aaron rookie. He wins....lol. Anyway we three would head out to a gas station, yep a gas station. They had a old cigarette carton container converted into a sports card holder. You needed them to unlock it to get your box. Every week we'd trek out there for 1-2 boxes each. That's where I bought my first Upper Deck box and scored my first Ken Griffey Jr. rookie card. Another 3 boxes....NOTHING. Then on my 5th and last box, a high series no less I got one more Griffey. So 5 boxes, 2 Griffeys. I had all the "big" stars that ended up not being so big. I also bought a complete set of Upper Deck 1989, as well as assorted rookies in bulk from a mail order card shop in N.Y. I got 89 Topps, Fleer, and Donruss Griffey Jr. x10, Sheffield from the same 3 plus UD. x15. I was getting 10 Griffeys for $10-15 depending on which card. Sheffield was only $.50-$1.00 each at the time. I also bought some BUSTS. Quite a few actually. More football than baseball. Ryan Leaf, Todd Marinovich, etc. Those were AWESOME days and nights. Sitting up with my 2 BEST FRIENDS ripping packs. Trading, joking, and just having fun. Tom had gotten married and had a beautiful little daughter and an amazing wife. She encouraged us to have fun. It sure beat getting loaded at a bar. So thank you again. These memories that re-emerge after seeing these videos are awesome and I get angry as well. I had a couple other "friends" who after my Mom died ripped me off of my entire card collection. Baxk then apartment insurance, storage locker insurance wasn't big. Or I was too young and foolish to realize it. What's done is done. I choose to remember the fun. I've picked up some cards since then. Not many. My hobbies changed after the theft. I just couldn't do it again. Now, well I was forced to leave my job for medical issues. Emphysema and asthma to be specific. I worked my whole life and I'm waiting for disability now. So buying anything right now is not possible. My prize is my PSA 9.5 1980 Topps Ricky Henderson rookie. As well as a few Brett Favre cards. His Falcons Stadium Club rookie card. I also have a Troy Aikman rookie as well. So I've gotten a few but I kinda wish I would have picked up some A.Rodgers rookies. As you can tell I AM a die hard Packer Fan. But my favorite is and will always be the Milwaukee Brewers. I received Mike Caldwell's home game cap from the 1978 season. I also got a Don Money cracked bat at a card shop. My Robin Yount & G.Brett mini and regular 1975 rookies were my other prizes. Sorry I diverted on another tangent. I really loved this hobby and whenever I talk and I'm reminiscent about the past, as you can see I can go and go and go. It was a huge part of my growing up, then towards the end of High School I got back into it more. By the time I hit 20, I was back. Not crazy back but I bought a box or 2 a week during baseball season. See I'm doing it again. Geez...ok I'll shut up. Thank you again for these videos. Being very sick, it helps me more than I can say.
1993 upper deck boxes all the inserts were always guaranteed in bottom left corner of the boxes. Figured that out back then buying packs. :)
A friend and I, at around 10 years old, split a box of 89 upper deck. They definitely were the premium card back then. Neither of us pulled the Griffey. The box was factory sealed, and we got a good share of the other rookies, Sheffield, Johnson, Jefferies. Even the Tom Gordon and Ramon Martinez were big then.
Absolutely love the weekend trips to antique and collectible shops. Exactly what my wife and I do most weekends. In hunt of my 'white whale'. Thank you.

@@TechyJoeCards - Perhaps I will give it a try on the next trip. I certainly do not bring the baseball expertise of Erik, nor has my experience in North Carolina been anything like his with the amount of ANY cards, but it could be fun!
Those 1989 Upper Deck boxes were always hard to find the rookie cards. I still have my old binder with Upper Deck Rookie card sets in them and my 1989 still has some missing slots from the ones I didn't find in my box openings as a kid. Did find one Junior though.
We need a Flashback Friday series! 😎
Amazing channel love those cards
At 15:10 your comment persuaded me to re-watch the 88 World series at bat of Gibson vs Eck. It lasted nearly 6 minutes and was just heroic on Gibson's part. I think Gibson's decision to ask for a moment threw off Eck's mojo. That was one of those epic sports moments. I'm not even a Dodgers fan but that is one of the great moments in baseball, one player in his prime the other severely handicapped and he struggles through to prevail. Thanks Erik!
Thanks for the retro edition grew up with these cards
I absolutely love opening 89 upper deck packs. A friend of mine pulled 2-Griffey Jr’s Rookies in 1 pack. I actually saw somebody open a pack of 1981 topps football wax packs and believe it or not he pulled 2 Joe Montana rookies in 1 pack. WOW!
Fun! Gotta do more early 90s in one of these videos
Dang, no Griffey Jr? Wow, that’s amazing, I’ve said it before, my all time fav player, fav card as well...
I saw Bo Bichette and Cavan Biggio and Vlad Jr play for the Fisher cats when they played the Reading Phillies in Reading this past summer. Made me feel old seeing those players kids on the cusp of the majors

I liked the Johnson pull, but to be honest...it was the 26:00 mark that got my heart pumping. Still does every time I pull him form a pack or a bargain box. Make fun of me if you want, but he was my guy, he and Dave Justice.
Love throwback Thursday! Box may have been a bust, but still fun to watch
watched "Jack Of All Trades".. real eye-opener since i hadn't kept up with collecting since the early 90s..
Loving these tbt videos!!
Woof! That was a bunk box. Sorry Erik, that was rough. Better luck next time. Leaf 90 in search of Thomas and Sosa rookies would be fun.
i love throwback thursday.

Was hoping to see a few Griffeys. I've always wanted to break a box of 89 upper deck.

Great video. I just subscribed. You definitely know your stuff.
I played travel baseball & went to card shows. My best pull from a pack was a Harmon Kilabrew that my friends Dad offered my 40$ for & i took it. I didnt realize it but some 25 years later i have no cards or anything left from childhood but i love watching this channel open new cards. Its kind of mind blowing how they cant search the packs but by searching one pack they can figure out the sequence. The new cards with live sigs & relics are just amazing. I seen you pull a Don Mattingly Auto! Stuff like that era as im 38 is really cool to watch. I hope to sometime join a break & get some cards. I dont know if you can mail to Canada though?
When I bought the 89 upper deck early i pulled at least 2 Griffey’s in 3 boxes each. Bought one 10 yrs later and pulled one. Searching these isn’t an exact science but dealers and collectors have there ways.
I LOVE this set. I bought a box of these in 1989 from a card/comic book shop in Colorado Springs,CO on vacation with my family that year (the same trip when I saw Bo Jackson play in Kansas CIty). I pulled one Griffey RC, about 7 to 8 Randy Johnson rookies and about that many Paul Molitor cards that I remember. Also I got 3 to 4 Nolan Ryan's and same of Tony Gwynn Padres team checklists. I guess I got a lucky box. I enjoyed opening it at a hotel later that night. I think I spent $50 bucks for the box at that time. I didn't see many packs in Michigan where I grew up so I had to buy it.
I feel so bad for being one of the few people to suggest you open this box. The cards though bring back so many good memories of my early days of collecting. These were flashy and new, although real expensive compared to topps.
hey jabs family enjoy all ur breaks an videos
Wow! What a box!
Tough break. Good vid. Though pray your health doing good. Stay positive bro.
Great video! 👍
I love the the kirby puckett. My favorite player of all time!!
In the late 90's I bought a pack of 89 UD and there were two Griffeys in the same pack.
At 20:06 you can see a Jerry Reuss card. He recently posted on Facebook about this card. He was having a little fun with the photographer and decided to imitate Fonzie from Happy Days. The photographer snapped a few "Fonzie" pics and Upper Deck ended up using one of them!
I remember back in 1989, I was working at McDonald’s making $5.00 per hour. I saved up and bought a box of 1989 upper deck and was soooo disappointed that there was no Griffey. I ended up buying a Griffey for $25.00.
also i heard back in the day there was a way to pack search those cards. dont know for sure. never havent gotten a box of those.
Back in 1989 I opened up 3 boxes of 89 UD before finally pulling the Griffey in the 4th box. Griffey was a tough pull back then so the fact that you didn't pull it didn't surprise me. Better luck next time.
89 upperdeck is definitely awesome. cause griffey is in there but id still like to see 84 donruss!
Back in 89 I bought 3 boxes of these and still didn't get a griffey jr. Just the way it goes.
Man... what a bummer of a break for you... only getting ONE of the cards you were looking for. Luckily, it was at least the Randy Johnson... to bad it wasn't his old Mariners teammate Junior.
Super entertaining, keep it up!
Can't wait for fan mail Friday Eman one of the days of the week I look forward too and I send u something for Elsa, Olivia and a lil something for u bro ur pal,Dodgers fan Drew!
Really enjoyed watching, sucks no jr but thanks for filming for us to chase it with you!
I used to open my card purchases during games on tv to increase my luck when i was a teenager.
After you did this, I went ahead and got a box of 89 Upper Deck as well. I was able to pull one Griffey, 4 Gary Sheffield and two Sandy Alomar Jr. cards. No Randy Johnson though.
