    Best station ever! I used to fall asleep to these D.J.s and gorgeous playlists growing up in the 80s in Granada Hills. I live in Texas now and found an HD2 station on 97.1 that was KOST and it was just deleted last month. I am devastated!

    From New York, I miss the music that is played on KOST 103.5 FM. The "tour" was quite nice. There was a radio station that became my favorite one from 1978 until 1982. It played middle-of-the-road music. The radio station was WTFM, 103.5. Its music format was considered to be, "middle-of-the-road (MOR) music. I miss lots of music artists who played slow rock and roll music that was easy to listen to. Today, the radio stations that play popular music to dance by are now called "adult contemporary" radio stations. The music at KOST radio smooth enough to flood out the fast music that is played on the Northeast, and I would not jeer. This radio station has the best kind of music in America.

    As someone who lives in the UK (and as such isn't all that familiar with the station as it was) I have 2 questions that someone might be able to answer. Firstly, did Kim always drive the desk or did Mark share that responsibility sometimes and why on earth would they transfer songs from CD 💿 to Carts? Surely the quality from a tape (even a digital tape) wouldn't be able to match that of a compact disc?

  • @MarkWallengren

    @MarkWallengren

    3 жыл бұрын

    We shared equally. We transferred songs to cartridges to control sound. Our program director carefully monitored volume levels and EQ settings because of the wildly different sounds from CD to CD. He was also a big believer and using as little air processing as possible to insure the best listening over the air experience.

  • @MarkWallengren

    @MarkWallengren

    3 жыл бұрын

    Dave! This was distributed through the now defunct Warehouse Records stores in the Los Angeles area. We promoted their stores on air and in return, customers were given a free rental of this video. We distributed thousands of tapes throughout the Los Angeles area in the late 80s. I imagine that what tapes are out there are traded by radio enthusiasts but that was not the design of creating this video. It was to let listeners see the workings of an incredibly successful radio station and to hopefully help to increase ratings. Thanks for asking.

    Quite a contrast to the modern Burbank studios that resemble a movie theater multi-plex with no less than 5 radio stations crammed into one building. By 2030 that building will be gone as well, as iHeart replaces all the DJs with AI voices: Siri and Cortana hosting mornings, "Hey Google" mid-day, Alexa hosting afternoon drive, Love songs and pillow talk with Brina in evening, then DJ-less jukebox mixes for graveyard. In 2044 the FCC will announce that all AM/FM/SDARS licenses will not be renewed and those frequencies will be auctioned off to other services starting in 2050. By then 5G on-demand music streaming and podcasting will have rendered broadcast radio obsolete.

    Yes, to include the whole digital frequency, because it's more precise. I did that when I was in Stockton 30 years ago. The FM identifier was "Oldies 101," but I took it upon myself, with more and more tuners going digital from analog, to start saying "100.9, Oldies 101." My boss heard me do that one evening and commended me.

    I think Mark and Kim make a cute couple. I've always wondered what happen to several of the people seen in this video including Brian Simmons, Lori Sanders, Mike Nolan, Sharon Dale and Chris Roberts. I'm petty sure not to many of these people are living today. I know Mark Wallengren does afternoons like what Mike Saklarides used to do

    Dylan Foss I’m happy to say everyone is still alive. 😂 Weird place to go. Laurie is in the Bay Area, Mike can still be heard in in Los Angeles on 94.7 The Wave, Mike Nolan and Sharon Dale have retired, Chris Roberts is the voice for UCLA Football/Basketball, Bryan is a radio programmer in New Mexico and Kim is around. Thank you for watching.
