The mid-ride interview should make a comeback haha. This was awesome.

This particular Iron Man War between these two guys is so inspiring and incredible that 34 years later, it's still one of the best, if not, the best race battle in history! Especially the run...very enjoyable to watch with each guy matching the other stride for stride for 25 miles, hearing their breathing and footsteps, with each step. One dude relaxed and the other kind of struggling. And finally, the break away at the end to the finish line! Very well deserved. I could not even image the feeling.

I remember watching this back in 89' and thinking how amazing it was! I knew how focused they were running side by side and not speaking to each other. It inspired me then and does to this day :)

at present, this edition is still the most beautiful ... finally for me. On the one hand, we have a pure swimmer who will be leading this race for a very long time...Wolfgang is having the race of his life! on the other hand we have a huge Dave who knows better than everyone each meter each section of roads of this event... and we have a Mark who proves from year to year that patience and work... one day ! bring success....I really liked the nervousness of Dave in this edition and the calm of Mark, who was always attentive to his efforts....Thank you for his images Mark ...a real nice to see them again! in addition they are clean!

Great video. I was there, though far behind these two, and I saw there faces on the run. Unforgettable.

Glah Pigg and Mackel are really privileged that day .... I would have dreamed of being in the wheels of Mark and Dave and feeling this tension! that said .... I think Dave should have been wiser on the bike .... and waited for the marathon being more juicy!

Like any race, it's always easier to figure out how one may have won it by looking back after it's over. Indeed maybe a different strategy on the bike could have done it for Dave. There were also moments in the middle of the marathon where I was having some down patches where if he had pulled away I am not sure I could have caught back up.

The philosophy at that time was to stay at or below 90% max heart rate on the bike and then run to win. Allen was smart on the run and was NOT going all out. Most of the pros these days do use heart rate monitors.

Dave Scott’s clothing line running shorts made by InSport were awesome! I ran thousands of miles in them.
