1988 Mariner No Spark / Wont Start Fix (Stator)

This video shows you how to fix the stator in a 1988 mariner 45HP outboard. Very similar to all classic 50 motors. The symptom was not starting/poor spark.

If you are sure you have an electric problem with a motor this vintage, my advice would be to just replace everything. Otherwise you might replace something and it will work for a bit only to have another component cause the thing you just replaced to fail shortly. I had to put in multiple power packs because I think the stator was killing them.

thanks for sharing - pulled mnie today, strangely my blue to ground was not shorted, but i got a resistance number, red however was ground to black (gnd) and also gave a resistance result - either way my motor seems to be running great start to about 2k rpms, then just no power.. still a bit confused about all the ohms stuff - anyway i removed my flywheel with 2 planks under neath and gave the top nut a good whack (screwed in most of the way) :p After about 10 whacks popped right off -

This may have been cleared up already but you were saying something about you didn’t quite understand the stators purpose. The stater is a two-part process for one it supplies the ignition. And the other supplies the charging system.

I have a two cyl 30hp Yamaha-built Mariner which ran fine last month, before I went out of town. I disconnected to battery while I was gone. When I attempted to reconnect the battery the other day, the battery cable arced, so I began eliminating wires one by one on the starter solenoid. Determined the one causing the arc was solid red which came from what I think is the rectifier. Don't have a manual yet and haven't been able to find a wiring diagram on line. My question is what would cause a dead short to develop while the motor was sitting still?

Hi Cathy, if the shop says it was a switch box issue then i'd imagine it is a spark related issue. So check spark plugs, wires, coils. If you have a timing light (or you can use one of those in-line spark checkers) see if there is no spark on all cylinders or just 1. If it is on all cylinders and the switch box is new, then its stator or trigger. Can you find a service manual for your motor?

Hi! Engines need 4 things to run: Air, Fuel, Spark, & Compression. Since you engines runs, I will assume compression is fine. So the question is why, after sitting, is it losing access to air, fuel, or spark. What I would do: Try it again and when you try it start if after 20 minutes, shoot some ignition fluid into the carburetor. See if it starts. If that works, then it is a fuel issue (e.g. you have too much oil in your gas mixture). If that does not work, then I would try to see if it is a spark issue. I would go to autozone or the like and buy an inline spark checker to see if you have spark on all cylinders. Hope this help!

Could be the stator. If prior owner replaced power pack (switch box) the old pack could have killed the stator. I'd confirm its a spark issue (inlne spark tool) too. Just to make sure it's not a fuel issue at higher speeds. If it is spark issue. I would run through this checklist to confirm which component is bad: photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOwaqrFXFjayWnWmLikHvs4I52i5njGM3FwnJ0igDjsUmMC17DDWp352InFkdZdQA?key=VUdwa0N4WFpYYjFDUmRoNFJyMC1weDRXczRpU1FR then replace that. It’s is a spark issue we have went through the carbs as the previous owner has also and replaced floats and all gaskets and diaphragms. with a spark tester open all the way strong spark on all 4. While engine is running we put timing light on each plug wire and found that number 1 fires all the time even with the coils swapped from the other cylinders that quit firing when engine rpms are increased. I think I’ve pretty much tracked it down to the stator based off all the testing I have done. And from all the info I’ve got off this video. Really appreciate all the help and good info you had. Hi Scott. I had the same issue. Seem very likely to be your stator is bad. The stator has two power generation circuits, a low speed and high speed. It is likely your high speed circuit is bad. Unfortunately, bad stators can also kill powerpacks. So start watching this video at 2:15. You can do the resistance measurements to confirm if you stator is bad. I think the high speed circuit is red/red-white.

Goose Fravah you'll want to search your serial number on the Mercury Marine parts finder to get the exact part number. Then serach that on eBay. www.mercurymarine.com/en/us/parts-and-accessories/parts-catalog

Merc stators are NOTORIOUSLY unreliable. They fail a LOT more often than OMC units. Don't waste your money on OEM Mercury parts - buy the CDI brand aftermarket stator - the quality is much better.
