The 72nd running of the Indianapolis 500 was dominated throughout the Month of May by Team Penske. Rick Mears had won the pole with a four-lap average speed of 219.198 mph, during his run he broke the single-lap track record of 220.453 mph, becoming the first driver to break the 220 mph barrier in IMS history. 1985 race winner Danny Sullivan had qualified second and the four-time and defending winner of the 500, Al Unser Sr. qualified third to complete the Penske sweep of the front row.
On race day, Team Penske led 192 of the 200 laps that day, with Rick Mears capturing his third Indianapolis 500 victory ahead of Emerson Fittipaldi (who had a penalty retracted for passing Rich Vogler under yellow, violating the blend-in rule, Vogler himself went to USAC officials to say that he waived Fittipaldi by because he was 8-10 laps down at the time and did not want to impede the leaders, successfully getting the penalty retracted when the final results were posted Monday), Al Unser Sr., Michael Andretti, and Bobby Rahal rounded out the top 5.

Paul Page's name must be included with the greatest sports broadcasters ever alongside Vin Scully, Par Summerall, Al Michaels, Bill King, Chick Hearn, and Dan Kelly.

the mainstream sports media don't consider open wheel racing a sport, there's nothing in sports that can compare to the Indianapolis 500 and i'm from upstate N.Y.!

Just finished watching this 1988 Indianapolis 500 Mile Race. 3 Things to note; 1. Seeing this history making race 35 years after it was run was a total thrill all over again. Rick Mears is my Hero right along side of the Great A.J. Foyt. 2. I've been a true fan of Jim Crawford, the "Flying Scott," even before tremendous Dario Franchitti. His courage and humility was nothing short of heroic and I'll never forget him. 3. I must thank those from "The Digital Archive" for posting this race in its "Satellite Format." It gave true fans of "The 500" a look behind the scenes at just what it takes to put on an event of this enormity and importance. Paul Page is standing in the annals of broadcast history side by side with his mentor, "The Great Sid Collins." I so hope that I am able to find many more KZread broadcasts of this Historic Race, a piece of Americana, presented in this Satellite Broadcast format. Thank you once again for this wonderful channel allowing me and all Indy Racing Fans Our look at History!

I appreciate this being available now more than ever after watching Team Penske lock out the front row again....26 years later. What an accomplishment for a team. There's a reason it's so rare. And also to hear both the on air and off air thoughts and process of the best CART/Indy Car broadcast team of all time doing their first 500 together: Paul Page, Bobby Unser, and Sam Posey, with Jack Arute and Gary Gerold in the pits. Especially compared to the awful, cornball, screaming, overhyping NBC team these days, these guys were pure class.

Great post! These are the Indy 500's I grew up with! As a native of Eastern Pennsylvania, the Andretti's misfortunes Memorial Day weekend was a yearly tradition during my childhood. Just of note, this race was 36 years ago! Not 26...man I feel old. I was in pre-school in 1987-88...lol...

I've watched video of this race many times, but this is the first time I've seen it with the feed of the commentators when off-air during commercials. Great stuff. During a commercial was the best shot I've seen of where I sat in the crowd, also. This was the first Indy 500 which I attended in person, and it was the first time my wife (now ex) and I overnighted away from our twins, then age 3-1/2 months. Since then, I've been to the race many times, including with the kids who are now adults. In a few years, I expect to take my grandson.

Danny's Penske PC-17 in that gold Miller livery and those flush chrome wheels is the best looking Indy car of all time. A shame his right front wing failed he'd have won it running away...

Unser had both adjusters fail on the front wing - but he was always a bit more cautious as a driver - kept it on track so they could tape the wings "close" to what they needed to be. I suspect the rabbit he exploded took out the right side adjuster (the left failed 1st).

Actually if you search for the brazilian broadcast you'll find the satellite feed. It is possible to understand in that feed when Jacques Villeneuve passed the pace car twice (something missed on ABC telecast)

Boy they were not even close on the final run down. Mears, Emmo, Unser, Mi. Andretti and Rahal were the official top 5. Crawford finished 6th. They showed Jim's rather slow pit stop with 5 to go - I knew 2nd had to wrong but timing and scoring was not exactly "tight" in 1988 especially because USAC was a complete joke. Tony George should have booted USAC and let CART run the 500 - but all that Brickyard 400 money made him think he could take over open wheel racing via the IRL........look who owns the Speedway now Tony...........eventually the George family got fed up with his antics and removed him from making day to day decisions about the speedway.
