1988 Harley Sportster Project Bike - Getting It Running (Part 1)

1988 Harley Sportster project bike I just picked up. It has not ran in an unknown amount of time. The video shows me doing basic diagnostics. The next video will be a carb rebuild and hopefully that will get it going.

I just bought a '97 883 that has been neglected for 20 years. My first venture into the Harley world. Videos like yours are a tremendous help in bringing this thing back to life. Thank you! And I just became a subscriber from Detroit. :-D

This is a very informative video series. This is necessary work to get a bike that's been sitting around back up and running properly again. I've been there -- many times. Thank you.

Good luck. Usually a good fuel system clean (carb, tank, lines) will get it going. I usually put a spoon full or two of oil down the spark plug hole before turning it over just to get the cylinders wet

@@wolfscrape I worked on some things. Changing the wiring harness right now. The original was hacked around. Was a real pain to troubleshoot electric issues.

Great videos by the way. thank you!! I wonder if you can help me. I started having this issue today. Having problems going into neutral. And also once in first gear and I start moving the acceleration becomes rough and bike starts to chock up as if it once to shut off. This same issue continues through out the other gears. I adjusted my clutch several times recently. Will this be an issue cause by poor clutch adjustment or a fuel deliverie issue??? Kindly advice me please. Thank

I've got an 88 883 myself. Took a couple years buts it's a Hammer 1250 with a set of V2s and 87 1100 heads with the bathtub chamber as of now. I've had it 5 years. I see you have an S&S on it. What jets you running out of curiosity? I have a .295 pilot and a .70 main I think in mine right now. Always playing with jets in it. I know this is a year old now lol. Mine don't seem to like an S&S for some reason but I am running drag pipes and blame those. It's fine after 2 grand but slow to me taking off. Love the whistling sound the tear drop air cleaner makes when ripping on it.. Can't get a mukuni to fit because of the right side petcock and a CV just a CV to me. works good but seems like the bike had more in it. saving for that exhaust still. Good video

I've sold the bike and don't remember what jets I was running. It ran perfect with the S&S though. Just as good as the HSR I ran on a different Sportster.
