The Peugeot 2.5 engine’s bottom end was bomb proof , but the cylinder head was aluminium and that gave no end of problems . The cylinder head wasn’t thick enough and as a result they gave head gasket problems . Peugeot tried giving the head bolts different torque settings to try and get the gasket to hold a bit better, but the heads cracked and went porous in the exauhst port or the pre combustion chamber . If the head was made out of cast iron , it would have been an excellent engine , but unfortunately the aluminium head lets it down horribly . It appears that this car was dumped because of said problems.

Dino Dragovic Those are leak-off pipes from the injectors. Basically return lines for excess fuel. The old ones had probably perished and were leaking fuel onto the engine.

Keyser Soze indeed you are. Check Wikipedia, there is a very good page on these cars, including a list of engines fitted. This is clearly a non turbo diesel which leaves only one option. 🙂
