It's an upgrade package from the base model S10 truck. Full gauges including oil pressure, tachometer, voltage, body side mouldings, chrome bumpers & grill, larger chrome outside mirrors, center console, carpet with sound deadening, A/c hubcaps (if no mag wheels) and other niceties. The GMC S15 equivalent is the Sierra. The base model, or "stripper" as we called them had none of the above. It was a basic truck that governments and service fleet companies, like, say, the power company bought for meter readers and basic transportation. I forget how much more the Tahoe package cost. My 1986 S10 extended cab 4x4 base price was just under $10,000, with $4500 in options when I special ordered it, without electric windows or electric door locks, or the 4x4 mag wheels and some other options. The best 80s S10 4x4 to look for is the one with 4x4 on the rear side of the bed. It has upgraded heavy off-road suspension, steering dampener, 4x4 mag rims, a Detroit locker (not limited slip) differential and is typically fully loaded with options. It's the equivalent of the Z71 package in newer full size Chevy 4x4 trucks. The Sport version is similar to the Tahoe in options, but has painted bumpers, a different steering wheel, no mouldings, black grill different wheels, and a few other things. The Tahoe is desirable over the base truck. The options cost more originally than an old used truck is worth. If you're going to hot rod one, you'd want the lighter base model or Sport, IMO. Hope this helps. You might be able to Google what the available options were back then. They would be in a sales brochure too. Hope this helps. Its just what I recall from 36 years ago.
