1987 Trans Am GTA Hidden in PLAIN Sight! The Early Worm Gets The 'Bird!!!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video, I go over purchasing my new 1987 Pontiac Trans Am GTA. This car was listed on Facebook Marketplace, and hidden in plain sight. It was listed as a "5.0 Trans Am", when in reality it was a fully loaded 5.7 (LB9) car with J65 4-wheel disc brakes, has a 3.27 gear ratio with G80 limited slip.
It has the factory AC9 articulating bucket seats, and is finished in Bright Red with a Black interior. Talk about the find of a lifetime with 3rd gen F-Bodies.

Still one of the best looking cars ever to me. I'm surprised the top is still on the air filter housing. The air intake on the 87's crack me up though. The absolute worst flowing setup ever lol. Years ago I installed a SLP Cold air intake and the difference it made was dramatic. That's one hell of a find for the price you're hinting at. Excited to see 2 3rd gen projects now!!

I envy you. I wish over here in Germany we could find one of those in THAT condition. And your car even has the 87-only type of diamond spokes, one year later, they were a bit different, and I really wonder about the 350-T-Top-combo, must be very rare. I once had a 92 GTA, 350, with light beige leather and that beautiful (92 only) 80U exterior colour. With the 15 cars made (GTA Source Page), I wonder how few of these officially hit the European (or German!) market. I really miss it. Give it a refreshing 81U paint job, and polish up everything else, and KEEP THE WHEELS! They are rare.

Wow reality they do ,but is no record of that,I do had one about 27 years ago,I sell it,I been checking and asking in groups, and I only find 1 more GTA,and one iroc that people ordered like this,,,I thought at the time that it was normal to have ,350, ttops,manual,..... Just years back that I tried to find one like this....and was impossible to find one and is literally no record that gm ever build one like this, because the torque....... But ..... At this time I had an 88 GTA,5.0,manual, digital dash, and a 91 GTA ,5.7 hardtop... Also 86 and 87 irocs,automatics...5.7,& 5.0 Hardtop and ttops.....I just love this cars Exelent buy👍👍 And people please don't start argue about That gm never made a GTA,5.7,ttops ,manual....cause I had one, that I bought straight from the dealer in San Diego.....

My car was in similar original shape with a few thousand more miles and I paid 3k in 2017. That car does not need much work to be mint other than paint and the body looks rust free and straight. The only thing I noticed was the piping on the back seat did not look like the Firebird style rear seats?

That's a clean car. However, if it needs paint, it's probably better for the buyer if it REALLY needs paint (i.e. lower purchase price). No doubt you can figure out the engine tick. Maybe just put some miles on it to see if it's a stuck lifter. As for Price, I'm going to say a great price would be anything less than $5K. A "Fair" Price would be in the $8K Range. The cars that sell for the teens are fully restored, or in IMMACULATE original condition. Sadly, the GTA just doesn't have the retail audience or demand that an IROC-Z does, even though the GTA is arguably a superior car. The Digital dash is DOPE!

I agree with everything you have said here. To me, the GTA is as cool if not cooler than a loaded Iroc. I'd prefer the GTA because as you said, they were sort of GM's "nice" F-Body at the time. I paid just under 6k for it as it sits. After doing some more digging into it, there's one big thing that's not factory about it that I missed haha. From my past experience, the faded paint is original and shiny paint was a respray. Now I'm not saying it was in a major accident, if any. I believe most likely either, a minor accident that just caused deep scratches in bumper, which maybe wrinkled fenders a bit? Or it just had scratches in front end and along passenger side. Possibly it was keyed. So instead of small touch ups, they just sanded and resprayed everything. (hood, front fenders, nose and entire passenger side) I also believe there was hood insulation from factory, that is also missing. And yes, the rattling noise under hood I believe is the AIR pump. In any case, this is a major find. A loaded TA GTA, with digital dash with 5.7L! And still all original with documentation! I would love to know production numbers with those options. If you go to this link: www.compnine.com/dealerlogin.php I was able to find out production breakdown by option using my VIN number. It is very detailed, at least it was when I used it 9 years ago. I believe you may need to pay a small fee, but it was worth it. I found out my 1991 Firebird Formula, which I still own is 1 of 28. But unfortunately, mine is no where near stock. If yours turns out to be a low production numbered car, I would keep all original, or at least keep stock appearing as possible, with minor performance modifications, if anything. It would be a steal at $6000. Good luck with it!

It 100% had paintwork done to it at some point. How much, and why is another question. There's red overspray on the black cowling under the hood and the insulation is gone as you noticed. That being said, the hood and hatch appear to be original (matching GM VIN tags on them). They didn't do the roof, drivers door, drivers quarter, and what appears to be the rear bumper cover. Everything else looks good like it's been "repainted". I'll check out your link and do a carfax on it to see if anything crazy happened. Looks good enough in person that I haven't thought much about it.

The horsepower ratings of this engine continued to rise year by year, until it's final year in 1992, in which it was rated at 245 h.p., and 345 lb/ft of torque. The 210 h.p. rating in 1987 was due to the extremely restrictive air inlet, which was changed in design for the 1988 model year, when the Pontiac ratings increased to 225 h.p., and 330 lb/ft of torque.

Also, this engine is coded B2L on the 1987-1992 Camaro/Firebird F-body platform. It was called the L98 in the Corvette, with the major difference being aluminum heads on the Corvette, vs. iron heads for the B2L, which contributes to the reduced power level. The 305 T.P.I. was coded LB9. You can easily verify which engine you have, by the 8th letter/digit in the V.I.N. on these 3rd gen F-bodies. An "F" indicates an LB9 305 T.P.I., and an "8" indicates the B2L 350 T.P.I. There are unfortunately, a lot of scumbags out there, who may try to pass a 305 off for a 350, because visually, they look identical. The V.I.N. is the surest way to verify what's under the hood before you buy.

I am the 2nd owner of an all original always garaged numbers match firebird formula (Florida car) with 47K miles on it nicely optioned out 5.0 TBI. In today's dollars it would sell for 30k. So that GTA once restored to original should be 8 to 10k higher in value easy. For the record when I found my vehicle it was nearly in perfect condition just had to do some cosmetic sweetening up, the owner was asking $12,500.00 I ended up getting it for $9,800.00. It's pretty much showroom condition it's like sitting in a time capsule. I also had to drive 7 hours each way to go see the vehicle, then hired a car carrier to bring it back, yes it was that nice. I wanted to keep the miles down and not risk it getting wrecked on such a long ride home. You are either the biggest fraud or the luckiest SOB on the planet finding that diamond in the rough. I scoured the world for over 3 months for the best possible deal I could find for the best possible condition vehicle and in all that time that's the best deal I could find anywhere. I could not discover any deal even close to what you paid for the condition that you got. I did find one GTA it was the same year showroom condition about 23,000 original miles and was going for $23,000.00 and I consider that a steel, an all original GTA with just over 20,000 miles on it. By the way the GTA in 87 with the 5.7 engine was not offered with T tops.

The car needed a full paint job and I was quoted 10k for it. A other shop wouldn't even touch it. I've since sold it because it needed work and I wasn't going to pat to paint it. Didn't make any sense to. You're right. The 87 5.7 couldn't come with t-tops. This car was sold as a hard top 5.7 car, and had aftermarket t-tops installed from cars and concepts. Thanks for the tip, and excellent point. This engine has center bolt valve covers. I'm not sure how to tell that it's a roller cam or not without opening things up and scoping the engine to be honest. I'll keep it in mind! Dont want to tear anything up.

@@Greenlightfilming if it has center bolt valve covers that's what I have so you may be good But I have heard of 350 having some roller parts and not all of it Just get the ending block number and Google it That what you will know for sure The last thing you want to do is toast your motor doing a oil change

How is it the original buyer was able to get the 5 7 and t- tops together on an 87? I worked for a Pontiac dealership back in 87 when the GTAs first came out, and the only way you could get t-tops was with the 5.0. Pontiac claimed that the the torque of the 5.7 was too much for the t-top models. Somebody please DM me on this one. Also in 87 the GTA had these weird paddle style mirrors instead of the standard Firebird mirrors.

The t-tops on this car were aftermarket parts installed by Cars & Concepts. Doing a quick Google search, I see the paddle style mirrors yoy are mentioning on like 10% of the 1987 "GTA's" that show up under images. Go be honest I didn't even know these could be equipped with mirrors like that. I don't know that it's standard.

Just saw this car for sale and I was like hey! That looks like this one! Checked this video, saw that the background looked the same, same color, wheels, t-tops... and license plates match. What's the story?

With the racetrack, work, and family I simply don't have time to drive this one let alone the other two. This one makes the most sense to part with. If it doesn't go, I'll store it this winter again.

@@Greenlightfilming I figured. Looks clean, immediately caught my attention. Seems like a fair price, but the camaros seem to sell more than the firebirds. Best of luck selling (or keeping :) )
