The reason this film resonated so much in the 80s is that after watching Conan, Terminator, Commando, etc we had seen Arnold as the biggest, toughest guy out there beating up EVERYONE. Then along came the Predator who was bigger and stronger than him, who picked him up with ease like a rag doll, and smacked him around. It was a serious "WTAF?" moment in the cinema when we saw it.

I was 11 when I saw this. I still have two of the Predator action figure I got in 1993, one is the clear colored Ambush Predator version molded from the regular predator figure. The edged weaponry featured in the film was created and designed by Knife Smith Jack Crain, and there are licensed and unlicensed replicas of those knives that are sold on ebay.

Don't talk about that movie like it's a thing. Not only does it do a grave injustice in terms of depicting both species properly, it's a straight up *BAD* movie. That film is shunned by nearly all fans of both franchises, to the point that is *officially* "not canon".

@@bensnod9159 just because I took a cynical tone doesn't mean I don't have a sense of humor. Plus, just because it exists doesn't mean we need to respect its existence... It's been disowned by both franchises. Alien 3, Alien Resurrection, all the Alien prequels, Predators, and The Predator (ugh) were all better movies. AVP is worth skipping in favor of AvP:Requiem (not without its own, different flaws- but these are of much lesser severity), which depicts both Xenomorphs and Yautja with much more respect to their lore in comparison... Predalien reproductive abilities being the big exception of course (made for a pretty good horror gore scene though, but it makes me think the writers hate children)

I could almost agree with both of you... but *Conan The Barbarian* exists. No need for much dialogue with Arnold, especially the campy one-liners that plagued the 80s and 90s. Nothing against their inclusion, just not necessary for anything other than cheap laughs.

Aside from the occasional cheesy line "Predator" mostly plays it straight, avoiding the B-movie trappings of the genre by taking itself seriously. "Commando" on the other hand is pure extra strength 80s cheddar. God I love it.

When the Predator shoots Dutch (Arnie), it shot Dutch's gun into two pieces. That's why Dutch is uninjured. The Predator intended to disarm Arnie, not kill him. ( whether that was actually the Predator's intent, or just a very lucky mistake(sacrifice by Dutch's gun?🥲) by the Pred that worked in Dutch's favor, I don't know;someone more knowledgeableplease chime in!)
