    Edward Legg , Good luck Edward. Mine was pretty straight forward. Unfortunately, after rebuilding my cylinders, my motor still would not stay up. I am certain now that it is a check valve problem inside my pump.

    @@cochrankoi . Do you remember how to remove check values inside the pump? So far I removed the retaining ring clips, but check value won't come out.

    Doing that just now. Mine's a '94 Mercury 3 Cyl. The only difference would be that on mine I've had to remove the piston from the ram shaft using the pin wrench in order to remove that tiny o-ring at the top of the end cap.

  • @andreirancu4338

    cochrankoi Well, I've replaced all the orings in the piston and memory piston below, put Pennzoil tilt&trim fluid, bled all the air out (took about 10 runs on the bench before it wouldn't take anymore fluid) and I can say it runs now. The problem I had with mine was that the outboard was real slow to go up and had a leak around the ram shaft.

    Nice video! Did you put anything on the 2 scrapers that go on either side of o-ring? Maybe a dab of red Loctite where they meet. Just wondering if I should worry about them jumping off and scoring the cylinder.

    Great video. It's nice to see what i am getting myself into before i tear mine apart. Do you mind sharing what the issue you were having that made you rebuild it? I'm not having a leak down problem but some sort of binding in trim range only. Any ideas?

  • @cochrankoi

    @cochrankoi

    Erick Ondich thanks for the compliments on my video. I was having leak down issues. I really don't have a clue what your binding problem could be. Maybe someone more familiar with these might comment. If it is salt water use maybe the shaft and seals are tight? Just a guess. Or perhaps it is a previous frozen problem that's damaged some internal parts. I really wish I could help more. Good look.

    Very helpful video. I am having leaking issue from cylinder and after watching your video, I plan on tackling the rebuild. I have an 86 40hp Johnson, do I have to remove motor from transom to remove cylinder, or is there an easier way to take cylinder off with motor still on boat. Thank you very much Jim

    Hey buddy, it's been a while since I did this repair, but the best I remember there were a tiny o-ring where each hose or line connects. You can find an up close diagram of these units on iboats.com

  • @cochrankoi

    If it is still leaking down then it is likely a check valve in your pump. I'm far from an expert on these things but that would be my guess. Also those old pumps are expensive and hard to find.

    could you remove that piston with the tilt unit and engine still on the boat?

  • @cochrankoi

    @cochrankoi

    Chicken_dude1 defiantly you could leave the engine in the boat. You would need to remove the cylinder though to remove the piston. Thanks for the comment man. Good luck with yours.

  • @andreirancu4338

    Chicken_dude1 That thought did cross my mind too but on mine the top position for the ram is at the top position for the outboard and you would need about an extra 2 inches of travel to get the ram/piston out. I should add that mine is a slightly newer Mercury unit but they are fairly similar.
