1987 4Runner Old Man Emu Spring Installation Part 2 of 2

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this two part series I walk through the process of installing the OME CS009R rear leaf springs on a 1987 Toyota 4Runner. Overall the process is straight forward as long as rust hasn't consumed your vehicle's underside.
Towards the end of the video I had a cold during filming. Excuse my nasal voice.
12:24 I meant to say 1.5" ball joints spacers.
Reuploaded with working audio.

    Haha and I imagine any spring is gonna be stiffer than the practically inverted ones and blown shocks on my truck now. I bought the kit with the nitro charger shocks, Dakar springs, extended ubolts, bushings, hanger sleeves, and steering dampener. Just waiting for this semester to end so I have time to install it all. I’m sure this video is gonna be a big help with that process. Thanks!

    Excellent vid AlexMan! Much appreciated. This is my next job. I'm thinking of getting the CS010R's though. Gotta do some more research to see what the differences are besides the 1/2" more lift. I've got an 88 4Runner and I'm here in Pennsylvania. Thank GOD my Runner spent most of it's life out west so my rust factor is minimal.

    The u-bolt flip gains you somewhere between an inch or two of ground clearance. You no longer have the u-bolt plate hanging down or the ends of the u-bolts pointing down.

    The u-bolt plate and the ends of the u-bolts pointing down is a bit of a snag point hanging down. Not only that but it leaves the ends of the u-bolts vulnerable to damage if they are dragged on something. This could cause removal and reuse to be more difficult.

    Hi Alex . I am about to install the ome kit... I was wondering if there is any weight that goes on that 3/8 metal Rod. How safe do you think it is is to replace that bolt with the rod? Thank you !!!

  • @TheAlexManVideos

    @TheAlexManVideos

    There is no weight on it. It just keeps the leaves from fanning out too much if you totally unload the suspension.

    Thanks for these great videos on the 4Runner. I have an 87 as well and am installing the OME CS010R leafs. Has your suspension squeaked? Didn't look like the grease you used was lithium-based. Makers of polyurethane bushings recommend using lithium-based grease on these components.

    I haven't noticed any squeaks since I installed the rear leafs. I've been daily driving the truck since I posted this video and that's including through the winter. I haven't re-greased anything yet. My original suspension squeaked but the new parts are quiet.

    Yo alex! I finally got the same OME leaf springs. Love the springs but very worried that the spring retainer bolt will hit the gas tank on the passenger side. You welded the bar through. Does that help clearing the gas tank when flexing ???

  • @TheAlexManVideos

    @TheAlexManVideos

    7 жыл бұрын

    Yes, it does. Welding a 3/8" OD rod in place of the bolt works perfect. Even fully stuffed on the passenger side there is no contact and good clearance.

    Awesome! I'm just worried it will rub when i'm flexing off road. seems to be no space between the leaf and tank.... Was thinking also maybe just getting off the bolt and bending the tabs over the leaf???

  • @TheAlexManVideos

    Mine flexes out fine. Not sure how much that space varies from one truck to another. Bending it over may work. Keep in mind those straps are there to allow the leaves to fan out when drooping without fanning too much. So don't just bend them flat, keep the bend at about the same place that the bolt used to be. Also try to plan so that the leaves don't just spread the straps apart and pull through.

    If I order these Old man Emu leafs and a random set of shock absorbers will they fit together or will i have to weld like you did?

  • @TheAlexManVideos

    @TheAlexManVideos

    9 жыл бұрын

    I only had to weld shock mount on becaue I installed a U-bolt flip kit. If you use the factory style U-bolts and the factory U-bolt plate/shock mount, you will not need to do any welding.

    TheAlexManVideos I see, thanks for the reply man I'm trying to get these ball joint spacers and the ome leafs. Basically everything you have except the cross member. I know you mentioned it but just making sure. If I dont add the cross member I wont have to mess with the drive line angle and pinion angle right? also what effect did this have on your mpg? sorry about all the questions! thanks again for the reply

    Aram M You may still have issues with the pinion angle, you may not. Some people report no vibrations and some end up like me. It seems like more people end up with driveline vibrations, unfortunately.

    TheAlexManVideos So it would be a good idea to get the shims with it as well and, just install it all together? The shims were the only things you needed right?

  • @TheAlexManVideos

    @TheAlexManVideos

    9 жыл бұрын

    Aram M You could do that and hope you need the same shims as me. It's best to measure once you have it assembled and order the right shims. You can drive it without the right shims around town but it will vibrate a good bit. I wouldn't go on any roadtrips but it's fine for a couple days while you wait for your shims to ship.

    +Javier Torales I've been very pleased with them. The bushings do squeak just a bit if they aren't greased, and make sure you check the pinion angle to minimize driveline vibrations.

    I thought you should only grease the inside of the bush you know the part where the shackle pins go through bush

  • @TheAlexManVideos

    @TheAlexManVideos

    6 жыл бұрын

    I've never heard that. I can see why one might say that since what is supposed to happen is the bushing stays stationary in relation to the spring and the pin rotates inside the bushing. But really, as things move and flex there will always be some small rubbing of the bushing against the spring eye. That small rubbing can cause squeaks. Squeaks are annoying and poly bushings are especially susceptible to this. After a couple years mine are squeaking and require re-greasing. I'm actually planning to replace the poly shackle bushings with rubber for that reason.
