1986 Skoda Estelle Two 120L (Type 742). Cars From Another Decade #4.
In this video, the fourth in the series "Cars from another decade" we look at the Skoda Estelle. The Škoda 120 was a rear-engined, rear-wheel drive small family car produced by Czechoslovakian car manufacturer AZNP in Mladá Boleslav, Czechoslovakia and this facelifted model benefited from a revised design and for most of its production life, it was the cheapest new car available on the British car market.
Our sincere thanks to Matthew for his time and for allowing us to film Mog, a 1986 Skoda Estelle Two 120L.

    Paul, you are spot on, Absolute credit to Matthew for saving & restoring the car to such a high standard. Back in the day there was so much unnecessary prejudice & snobbery against these cars, Lots will have been scrapped for the sake of it. A neighbour got a mint 3 year old Estelle in the early 90’s when he retired, posh sunroof & stereo model, RAF blue, very low mileage, he was as proud as punch of that car. I had a mint 4 year old Favorit 30,000 miles, I got a company car so needed to sell, A local garage had a good reputation for selling customers cars for a fixed fee, Owner refused to sell my Favorit ‘ ( as in his words ) ‘it was rubbish just like Estelle’s’. I sold it to a friend, who still has it, with over 150,000 on the clock.

    Thank you. I believe that same prejudice, to some at least, exists today. Although probably (hopefully) not as often as I think it, I believe people who drive certain brands of car look down (sometimes literally when sitting in their lofty Range Rover etc) on other people. This has always intrigued me; particularly as many either drive these vehicles on lease, company car or PCP. I have no issue whatsoever driving our Citroen 2CV or my Smart. In fact it is those cars I get the most pleasure from and I hope that comes across on camera. Feeling unhappy, stressed? I go out in the 2CV or Smart for an hour and its like therapy 😊 Sincerely thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Appreciated.

    The Estelle is a very underated car, everyone I have taken out in her has commented on how comfortable and nice the car actually is ! Surprising Skoda was the sales line at the time and they certainly are. New the Estelle was cheaper than a 2cv by a fair bit. You certainly got more car for Ur cash ! I have owned many favorits Felicia's and even a Felicia fun ... All great practical and reliable cars ... I will always have a Skoda or two in my life 😉

    Great video! I've owned and driven Estelles since 95. I happened by one at a breakers yard whilst I was finding parts for my Fiat. An old 120LSE was sat on top of the small Fiat, and I was impressed by what I saw (Disk brakes, double wishbone suspension, and the design of it seemed very well thought out indeed). So I researched the Skoda a bit more and made one my next car. That was 27-years ago, and I finally had to take my Estelle off the road in 2018 because of rusty sills! Never mind the low price of these cars, they are wonderful to drive, comfortable, not actually that slow when compared to other cars of the era with a similar engine size, and have lots of space for a family of four. Regarding brake squeal - try a different brand of pads. I remember buying some that squealed terribly. Also make sure the manufacturer hasn't put too much paint on, as I've had some pads 'stick' in the calliper and overheat! The ticking noise from the indicator is actually a little hammer hitting the side of the flasher unit! The owner of Mog has done a cracking job on this car and it is a pleasure to see. All the best - Gord :-)

    I think the Estelle, like our 2CV were very well engineered and as you say, not as “slow” as people would think. Matthew is obviously extremely passionate when seeing the work he has done to Mog and his 120L is a testament to the level of skill and time he and others have put in. Many thanks for watching and your comment.

    Lovely video. Enjoyed all of it. I run 2 x Estelles so definitely enjoy all aspects. Couple of things, it's a doddle to add the intermittent relay. I snapped one up off a car in the scrapyard and 10 minutes later - luxury of intermittent! Also squeaking brakes are from to hard pad types I find. Originally was asbestos and those never squeak. Lastly its worth paying extra for the genuine PAL distributor. The Chinese ones can cause all sorts of problems including not starting!

  • @barerust5140

    @barerust5140

    Жыл бұрын

    Over heating can be common. i think mainly due to the distance coolant has to travel, its vital on the Estelle to bleed all the air out of the cooling system correctly and ensuring they are flushed out regularly! And the correct coolant is used and not just water . I have never had an issue with mine over heating or running a hot temperature. Also vital is ensuring the water pump is in tip top health and fan and switch are working as they should. The water pump has its work cut out moving coolant from the radiator up front to the engine at the rear. The cast iron head and ally block as we mentioned in the video does not help with over heating. But as long as the cooling system is properly maintained there fine. Tbh many friends in the owners club with these cars also dont seem to have huge issues with over heating. But as mentioned the alley block n cast iron head makes them prone to head gasket failure.... So u do have to be mindful of that..... I have to spare head gaskets and a head so ..... Few hours and she would be gd to go again ☺️
