Bill Buckner ( and his wife and daughter) suffered very much by being scapegoated for the Mets Win by the New England fans for years. He had a great career. Watching ESPN's "Catching Hell" about Cubs fan Steve Bateman and scapegoating, really made me feel for Buckner and his family. The Mets were a team of Destiny. They were a great team. The Red Sox were great as well. Destiny was not to be denied, but choreographed by Met and New York Magic. Bill Buckner was a great player, and even though I am a Met fan for sure, I am a baseball fan first. Bill Buckner will always be remembered by This fan by MORE than that one flawed play. His perseverance in the years after 1986 and what he went through as a Man because of one error, will always make me admire him for the True MAN he was. RIP BILL. You were a great baseball player!

We certainly know! One surreal event that never came about was Tom Seaver pitching for the Red Sox in the 1986 World Series against his own "Franchise", the Mets. Tom pitched for the Sox in 1986 but unfortunately developed arm trouble and was inactivated for the Sox' 1986 post-season. Number 41 was seen in a Sox uniform in the dugout for the post season and almost nothing was made of his presence. One could only imagine what could have been.

The story I am intrigued by the most is Game 6 of the World Series, is Bob Costas explaining how the Champagne went from the Red Sox locker room and taken away, because of the Mets comeback, wow!!!!

  • @DDEENY

Hear, hear. The amazing part was how quickly the champagne switched locker rooms and the plastic sheeting used to protect the clean uniforms in the locker room from champagne spray before the Red Sox players made their way back after the devastating loss. Bob Costas also noted how "frail Mrs. Frazee" (elderly wife of the Red Sox owner Harry Frazee who had initiated the "Curse of the Bambino" by infamously trading Babe Ruth to the Yankees) was led into the Sox' locker room as a Red Sox team honoree to celebrate the historic victory that never came about. I wonder if anyone ever apologized to her afterward.

It could have easily been Schiraldi too. Game 6 he gave up 3 straight hits with 2 outs and a 2 run lead but more importantly gave up the go-ahead homer by Knight in Game 7. I’ve seen him in several documentaries over the years and seems like a really great guy, and you don’t wish the “Buckner treatment” on anyone.

They may have been a bit over the top but ......After all the years of being called basement dwellers, loosers, and the like AND owning the worset record to this day in baseball, why not celebrate a good team thats successful. Yet its ok to kick em when they were down, be the butt of jokes?? No, they deserved this, especially when you have a most successful franchise, the Yankees to measure up to. They earned it andd deserved it.
