Right - He was not as talented as Maradona, but he had the ability to play almost any position except of center striker and goalie. In his late years Matthäus was still superb as sweeper at Bayern at an age over 30. His vision, speed, defense aggressiveness + leadership really made him to one of the All-time-Greats ☝️🙋‍♂️

Well Messi 's hardest opponent was a girona player That doesn't mean the girona player was the best I think gullit is a lot more complete than Mauthaus because he has a lot of experience at different positions

Both are completely different, Gullit with power and tremendous head play, two-legged play, very fast, playing in the midfield and striker position, during Saki gave him freedom on the field, with Capello restricting him to play only in the wing position (and they did not get along at all and that made him leave Sampdoria in the summer of 93 , From Athos both defensive and offensive contact, amazing ability, I liked him as a contact and not a brake, who better? They are completely different.

Don’t know but this was a great match to watch as they usually are…the full game is around on KZread somewhere. From the days when ‘friendlies’ were taken as serious international matches; without dozens of substitutions; and players not wanting to ‘hurt’ themselves for their club teams when playing for their national teams..,

The two favourite midfielders of my childhood

There can be no comparison between the two players. Matthaus had mixed functions in midfield despite having been a more World Cup player, while Gullit had exquisite technique and was a true offensive team driver. Maradona never faced Guillit at the national team level.

The best Holland ever would be the class of 1974. As great as Gullit and Van Basten were, Cruyff tops them. In addition, the 1974 team had two world class midfielders in Neeskens and Van Hanegem while Holland of 84-92 didn't have players of that caliber in midfield, and in defense, Rudy Krol was as good as Rikard and far better than Koeman.

Holland stopped being awesome after Sneijder, Robben and van der Vaart. We used to be able to select a whole team of strong players. But currently there are only like 5-6 players that would make it at any team. De Jong, de ligt, van Dijk, Wijnaldum, de Vrij, Blind. 4-5 players are just fillers. The Netherlands is just a midsized country. Which shows when we play against countries with 60+ million people. They could select 4 strong squads.

Germany was definitely better in those days. 3 World Cup finals and 3 Euro finals I'm a row. It's a shame that generation only got 1 World Cup. But it's better than a lot of generations.

as per video - Matthaus is definitely better: he is quicker, making the ball move faster, more dynamic in midfield. Gullit looks isolated in team actions.

Ruud Gullit played much better than Mattheus in this game but sadly for him he didn't find a good combination in the front to help turning the opportunities into goals.

Andreas Brehme had more balls than Matthäus. He took the deciding penalty in the 89th Minute in Rome 1990 World Cup final when Matthäus was too scared to take the penalty. Overall , Matthäus was a bigger legend . But Brehme deserved accolade too . German supporter.
