1986 Le Mans 24 Hour Race | Opening Lap with Vern Schuppan | Porsche 962C

The greatest endurance race in the world is the ultimate mix of high-speed action, drama and, often, tragedy, and the 1986 running of the Le Mans 24 hours race was no exception.

Once again the Rothmans Porsche team fielded three works cars as the Stuttgart marque challenged for yet another victory. However, the British Jaguar team was ready to break the Porsche domination with its awesome Silk Cut-backed XJR-6s.

It looked set to be a showdown between the turbo-charged works 962Cs and the Jaguar V12s, but the Joest team, victors in '84 and '85, could not be discounted and the Porsche 956B of Klaus Ludwig, Paolo Barilla and John Winter would lead the early running.
The superb action footage captured in this fast-paced review brings you the full story of more than 3,000 miles of racing as the privateer Joest team battled with the factory-backed Jaguar and Porsche cars.
There's also plenty of dramatic in-car camerawork courtesy of the Rothmans Porsches, including some jaw-dropping overtaking at 200mph-plus on the Mulsanne straight.
Tragically, what looked set to be one of the greatest Le Mans races ever was marred by the death of popular Austrian racer Jo Gartner in a crash during the night.
With all three Jaguars and two of the works Porsches forced out by accidents and reliability problems, the number one Rothmans Porsche of Derek Bell, Hans Stuck and Al Holbert was left to take a subdued victory - the fourth for Le Mans legend Bell.

Very true. No paddle shifters like they have on the steering wheel these days with the Hypercars.

Except for Shuppan who was driving an automatic transmission, according to the commentator anyway.

Schuppan’s car actually was equipped with an automatic “PDK” gearbox. Audi also used this in one of their S1 Quattro Group B rally cars during the 1985 RAC Rally.
