We had one when I was a kid exactly like this. Same package, same color, same everything. Loved this van, coolest dash readout ever made. Surprisingly fun to drive for a van.

1985-1988 had this look. 1989-1991 got the 2nd face-lift but retained old interior, and introduced the Eddie Bauer extended length model, offered AWD as an option, 1992-1997 saw the final face-lift with updated new dash and interior, wheels and hubcaps with the introduction of the third brake light on the hatch in 94 and new red tail lights for 1997 only.

That xlt trim level was the eddie bauer trim level before eddie bauer was a trim level. That xlt trim level had pretty much every option that an eddie bauer edition trim level would have had as standard equipment. I think 1988 was the first year of the eddie bauer trim level for the aerostar.

Considering this was the 2nd model year for the Aerostar this one appears more loaded with options than most were! Weird this is supposedly an 86 and doesn't have a 3rd rear brakelight! I know the 85s didn't have that light in all makes.

The 3rd brake light didnt appear on the aerostar until 1994, when it became mandatory by the NHSTA for all non commercial passengers vehicles to have them. before 1994 the gov didnt mandate the 3rd brake light for passenger van's and light duty trucks, only passenger cars were mandated to have a 3rd brake light by 1986.

Had an 86 in high school as a hand me down driver. Reliable vehicle even though it had a few issues at 200k miles. However the ac had a leak in the evaporator under the dash. You could charge it with r22 and all would leak out over the course of a month or so…

Just bought my aerostar for $700 with 130000 miles. I had to put in around $300 worth of parts to get it road ready. Guess what? 1000$ dollar vans are legit.

Amazingly preserved Aerostar, love that this has been so well taken care of and is being given its due. One question, can you confirm this is the 3.0 V6? I thought for the 1986 model year only the fuel injected 2.3 litre 4-cylinder and carbureted 2.8 6 cylinder were offered. It has the same electronic fuel injection badge as my 86 with a 4 cylinder, but is listed as a 3.0 V6, which was fuel injected but I thought was not available until the 1988 model year. Thanks for your time, beautiful looking van!

When I was a kid we had pretty much the same van, even the same color and interior. Ours had the 2.8 V6 Cologne motor, but they were fuel injected not carbureted. The 3.0 Vulcan motor was also available in '86. The 2.8 was only mated to the Aerostar early during the '86 production run. It ran fine and the van was quicker than you'd think, not tied down with excess weight like all new vehicles seem to be.

@@walterwhite6074This is invaluable first hand information that I've been looking for for years! Seems like the vulcan was in development and they needed a v6 to stuff in there in the gap because they really wanted to get the Aerostar to market, as it was already delayed. Do you have any idea what FI system was on the 2.8? I have to figure then an '86 manual carb'd 2.8 must be a rare bird indeed. That's what my buddy has (i sold it to him) and I have my 86 4cyl FI 5 speed. Funny thing is I have never driven it because it was non-op the entire time I owned it. Now I have to go drive it to see how powerful it feels in comparison to my other '93 vulcan 3.0 automatic - cheers, and janky do thanky

Not sure about the FI type other than it was a Ford Europe design and they didn't make very many of them. The 3.0 Vulcan came over from the Taurus but the Aerostar was the first rear drive application for that motor. I'd love to find an aerostar with the 2.3 but hard to find anymore. Long live the Aerostar lol! @@JankyAF

I just remembered the 2.8 FI was electronic if that helps at all. There was even a badge that said this on the back of the van lol. I guess back in the day that was a big deal. Nice talking with you.@@JankyAF

@@walterwhite6074Wow more great info thank you. My '86 is a 2.3 and its awesome, not fast at all but its exhaust note is surprisingly nice, a healthy burble, and with the 5 speed its very engaging to drive, with the giant long school bus shifter. This is sort of the missing piece, because I have the fuel injection badge too (so funny to see them bragging about it, actually i have a 1982 Fiat X1/9 that also has a fuel injection brag badge, its a funny little club of vehicles) so i assumed because I thought that all 2.8's were carb'd, and didnt think the 3.0 was available, that that must mean the badge not only meant FI but also by association meant that it was a 4 cylinder. Mystery solved! Janky do thanky, nice chatting w you as well. The Aerostar doesn't have quite the lore of a mustang or corvette, so piecing together these little idiosyncrasies of different options on different years is a very fun little puzzle to figure out.
