1986 Ferrari Testarossa - Episode 010

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

It’s 1986. INXS is blasting on the radio and a young Benny Musu stares longingly at the red Ferrari Testarossa poster hanging on his bedroom wall. Fast-forward 35 years and the boys take to scenic Pt. Leo Estate to finally settle the debate: who’s 80s poster car is better; Benny's 'sculpture-on-wheels' Testarossa or Dave's Lamborghini Countach?
-
It's all about the drive... And, if the journey can be done again, but faster - then all the better.

Belts are done between 5-7yr. Today's belt are better quality then 1990. Love the flying mirror, so much better as a pair than singular. Very tempted to change mine. I just done mine after 10yrs, still in good nick.

I actually have heard its not the belts that are the problem but the tensioner. The tensioner has a closed grease fitting which fron sitting the grease goes bad causing it seize. Obviously while the engine is out you will change the belt as well. Ferrari owners want to see the documentaion that it is done every 5 years but in actuality you are probably fine doing it every 10. The service manager at Ferrari told me this.

@@andrewmcintosh9832 I am familiar, I am a professional mechanic and shop owner as well as a collector and have seen enough timing belts in my life to know what is true and what is bs. One of my Testarossas did in fact have original tires until last year, many still do. It proves original mileage and is very common on low mileage examples. My other Testarossa I bought with the original belt still on it 7 years ago, and I ended up replacing it myself. The rubber was not in great shape (kind of hard and shiny), but it was still good enough to drive cross country to get the car home. Currently I have a Lexus SC430 in my garage as well that has about 60k on the original belt which is 19 years old. I inspected it when I got the car a month ago and it looks completely fine, pliable with no cracking. I will give that another 2-3 years before replacing it. So I guess everyone has an opinion, some people have opinions that are based on what other people say rather than experience - That is at best a worthless opinion.

  • @alphaetomega

@@roberthaydenoz Most don't drive them enough to do mileage based replacements. in 7 years I have put maybe 2500 miles on one of my TRs. The belts still look new and the lettering printed on the belts has not discolored at all. Still bright white. The belts on these cars are in no way inferior to a Honda, Toyota or Subaru timing belt which do not fail under 100K miles or around 25 year of age. It is however very profitable to overchange them for the franchise holders which need to keep the lights on.

Own both, love both. Testarossa is a fun car, you better take it easy with . Apart from the terrible maintenance schedule, they are prone to a wide variety of problems. The fuse panels are known to give out, the interiors fall apart, and the rear differential is extremely weak. The Countach on the other hand feels indestructible. The Countach looks better, sounds incredible, requires far less maintenance, handles better and is faster. On a recent Grand Tour episode they put both on track, and the Countach not only beat, it obliterated the Testarossa ( also the Bugatti Eb110 and Jaguar Xj2220) . In the publics eyes, the Countach makes the Testarossa invisible. The only advantage I give the Testarossa over the Countach is in braking. And lastly, a Testarossa must be Miami Vice white. :) As for which is closer to a race car, merely take a look at the Countach suspension setup, compared to the Testarossa, and you'll see there is NO comparison.

The Testarossa is a reliable car. My fuse box has been (preventively) renewed with better electric circuits. The interior is like new after 43000 km and nothing is moving or making any noise during driving. The leather quality is excellent. Yes, the differential is a weak point but I avoid to do sporty launches from 0 km/h. I hope and I think it will last longer than me. It will write you a message the day I have an issue with my TR. ;-)

Personally this one is my fav of all. But when he said the lambo was more race car he was right. The chassis was racing car type stuff at the time. The suspension used rose joints which was used in racing cars at the time. The engine was in a very high state of tune like you would find in a racing car which is why it makes its power up to and not all the way through like the Ferrari. Dallara and bizzarini were both former Ferrari engineers. Dallara worked on chassis that was his craft and he applied his lessons learned from racing into both the miura and countach. But that’s why the testa is a better car bc it’s meant to be gt which is better for on road usage. It’s easy to drive and anyone can do it the lambo would require a pro to rly maximize its capabilities

First off, a VERY well done video. I think the Testarossa was a, ‘Grand Prix’ car with a lounge seat. The engine came directly from the 312 T-4. Anyway, it is striking to see something as beautiful and controversial as the Testarossa being that today’s cars look pretty much the same, to my eye. Nothing stands out, really. Great video, lovely panning shot of the Lamborghini, but not enough film of either the Lamborghini or the Ferrari Testarossa accelerating up to high speed, and maintaining high speed for any length of time,or mingling with or overtaking ordinary cars,on the road. And seeing these cars do these things from the outside, not being made to feel claustrophobic inside the the car with the drivers, or driver waffling on excessively, and these expensive cars doing next to nothing. How many opportunities does an ordinary person get to see one of these car’s,let alone drive one. That’s were you come in.Providing us with great views of what these cars look like demonstrating their dynamic action, and potential on public roads, and on the track. Not chortling on about what your seeing, and what sensations your enjoying, and feeling. That’s all very well and good, for you,but we are not feeling them.Too many test drivers do this.I find this selfish, and somewhat inconsiderate It’s also a wasted opportunity to show to the viewer what the car can do.I hope you take on board these observations, and my rant has not been in vain.It would be wonderful to see great improvements, and much improved test drives that are much more satisfying and enjoyable to watch.

This car would have had only one flying mirror from new. When it was imported to Australia it was probably deemed by the government officials that it needed a passenger one to comply with the design rules! I sure someone put it there in the interests of symmetry not realising it would be completely useless as you can't see it from the drivers side for the pillar! So a pointless exercise anyway. - Dave
