I attended this race we sat directly over the turn that went up in the stands we would look right down on riders as they made the hairpin turn. Best memories i had as a kid was supercross in pontiac

Cool. And you know Hannah's ego just ballooned after this.....as if it couldn't get any more inflated than it all ready was. But hey....he always backed it up. Probably the best rider ever to twist a throttle.

+kepler240 Nobody ever became a champion of anything, with out "self esteem". Some of them just have a tighter woven filter between their brain and their mouth. I love big ego's that publicly show great self esteem. I think they make great Hero's.

My first SX race, I was about 12 and still can see/smell the 2 stroke fuel lingering in air at the Silverdome and hearing the roar of 20 250cc two strokes ripping thru the stadium. Thought it was so cool how the track went into the seats. Good times.

It’s not true that only Johnson did the triple on Saturday night in ‘86. I was sitting there by the triple. The first time Bailey saw Johnson do the triple, he did it one time the following lap. After that, he returned to doubling.

Does anyone know the name of the vhs with all of Rick Johnson’s battles with David Bailey and Jeff Ward. Including the race where Johnson crashed and came from 18th to 1st and won. I watched this vhs tape about 100 times but I never knew the name of it, and I would love to watch it again.

This was the first SX race I attended, and I don't remember any of that great action, or Bowen mixing it up that hard with the top brass. Heck, I was shocked just now to see him pass Bailey for the lead.

I remember one year Bowen had the race win wrapped and then his chain broke. He slammed his helmet so hard it bounced about 20 ft straight up off the concrete floor.

I remember racing his littler brother "Greg Bowen" at Morelands MX in Stanton MI. around those same years, (which I never went fast on--but kept going there anyway--lol). Well, he was in the "A" class, (and winning), and I was in the "B" class, (and not winning). It was a staggered start, so they raised the gate again, and we took off after the "A" riders were several corners gone. I remember Greg lapping me on a downhill into a right hander and back up again. I remember thinking, "Damn it, I know I can go that fast into that corner", but my body never reached that mental capability. :)

Morelands was fun, half that track was hard as concrete and the other half was loamy (just like Mustang Acres). Speaking of Kieth Bowen, did you ever go to the track on M-53 (WheelWars?) That was the first track I rode for open practice. We got there and Kieth (who had just signed with Yamaha in 84) was out there. There were no flaggers just a guy collecting money at the gate. We later heard they closed after a 3 wheeler and a bike did a head-on collision over a jump.

@@fkhan577 No, I don't remember that track. I started racing in 84, and I raced about 6 times a summer for about a decade. Mostly at Red Bud, (night track usually, but I did great at one of the first grass races) and Morelands. I did Baja and Midland, (first race) only once, but later got good in the sand.

Bones! Both Keith and Greg bowen were great riders! Greg won in 87, 88 at Loretta’s against some guys that went one to great careers. I think 89 he finished 2nd behind Lamson. This was 125 A Mod I think. They both won a handful of championship at Loretta Lynn’s. Keith had a good pro career and Greg did to.

Yea, good times back then. Michigan has not put out a factory rider since Kelly Smith over 2 decades ago. Not like the good old days. I bet John Grewe is still fast though. :) I remember seen a kid on green named Bruce Clary at Morelands back in the later 80's. Fast. 2 seconds slower than Eddie Warren as I saw them race once, (Warren factory rider then). I saw another fast kid once, and never knew what happened to him. A kid named Robbie Mugen, (91 ish). I got a hole shot on him, but that was it. :)

@@EarthSurferUSA was good back in the day! Yes sir, Eddie Warren was another fast guy from that time. I don’t remember mugen though. Morelands was the place to be! I don’t ride anymore but live close to Loretta Lynn’s now and like to go show up and see the next batch of fast kids! It’s hard stay away from moto. I still talk the Greg and hope to get back home to see him and hang out for a few. Preferably around hunting time lol
