Why was this ever tampered with? This is perfect. The asphalt, the cars, all of it.

I think the reason was because the asphalt was breaking up which was a safety hazard for the drivers especially at those speeds.

Seeing Bob and Benny is just sad. They made NASCAR sound so fun.😢😢😢 Also, seeing how Bristol was laid out, compared to how it's a literal collusseum, its not the same. R.I.P Tim Richmond. The biggest "what if" in NASCAR history.

Thank you for posting this. I love watching the old races with the drivers I grew up watching. But, from these comments, I guess I'm in the minority about Bristol going from asphalt to concrete. It BECAME the true "Thunder Valley" in the late 90s with the concrete...and the racing was never better. The best rest ever was the 1999 night race in August, most true NASCAR fans know the race I speak of. And thank God they stopped with the damn dirt covered track!

Watching these races just depresses me with what NASCAR's become today. You have Steve Phelps trying to turn every track into Talladega while cars can't get close without plowing.

@@rdaws73I'd say it peaked before then. Probably around the end of 2002. True fans stuck it out for a little while after Earnhardt died but without him there for people to cheer and boo for it just wasn't the same and the gravity of that loss really started showing in 2003. It's been on the decline ever since

I was 6 years old and at this race. We started going in the fall of 83 and then did both races from 84 to 88. If you notice on the front stretch nobody is sitting or even walking from about the tenth row down while under green. That's cause you would get peppered with chunks of rubber and some of them could hurt ya! Lol good memories! One of the biggest brawls I've ever saw was at the end of the fall night race during that time we were going. I can't remember which year but it started with people throwing chicken bones and hitting people below them and everyone had a ton alcohol in them! 😆 Nascar is nothing like it was back then! Can we at least get the commercial break music back on tv? I love hearing that old bluegrass!

It was Richard's 400th CONSECUTIVE race, dating back to 1971, and something like 960th overall. In 1986, he made his 1.000th start overall. Still, 200 wins in less than 1,000 races is better than a 20% average.
