Hi bryede. Thank you for your comment. How were the XT6's to drive in comparison to the XT? Years ago I worked for a Suby specialist w/shop (nothing was irreparable i.e engines, trans, final drives etc; etc) I have 2 of these beauties. The other one has had the "mild custom" treatment over the years.

Awww my first car. Dam I wish I had your skills! I was about 15 when I saw one drive out of a basement car park in Adelaide. I had never seen one before and I couldn't stop looking at it. 2 years later I bought one, sadly it was a lemon, countless issues and my sunroof would leak like crazy. Still I loved the car.. We'd get 5 in the cab and 1 in the boot. Was a huge boot! Years later sold it to Mt Barker wreckers in 2002 for $200. I love seeing these cars and so awesome to see a restoration in SA. :-)

Thank you for your comments sir. I kinda have plan/s??? to re-engine the silver car with an EJ22, as I had successfully grafted same engine into my Suby L Series touring wagon some years ago to be better equipped for off road work....Was it what!! Finding more time & the extra w/shop space required these days is a bit of an issue (you don't say?!?!??) Hope you manage to have yours restored one day also. Regards.

Thank you for your comments. Very pleasing to hear that my 2 yrs of BST has prompted your good self to "get off da couch" & start your own resto/s. Looking forward to seeing your progress visuals.

Fantastic resto I rescued my Xt from under a tree. It had had a front end crash. I ended up with another shell to graft another front onto it. All the rust spots were the same as mine. Well done I have had mine on the road now for 2 years up in Gympie Qld. Cheers Shane 😎👍

Need a few parts, mainly trim, which I think I have now sourced, so just a case of gathering all the bits and assembling. I have owned it for 8 years and really never driven it as I live in Sydney, but will move it down to Sydney in due course. I also have 4 SVX's and a Brumby.

I had an '86 turbo in the states, which was simply called "Turbo XT". Light blue originally, and I too painted it this combo eventually. I saw this darker blue on someone else's car and I was smitten. Mine had the orange digital dash with the silly bar graphs, and the seats were partially checker board. Two things are true: 1. I loved that car. 2. I have never owned another car that broke down as much. I can't remember how many clutch cables I put in, or how many times a spline on the drive shaft(s) stripped from the rotor/hub. A blown coolant hose on a highspeed Interstate run ended up destroying an engine. I found an engine from a crashed all wheel drive model, and drove a few more years. The dedication you put into reviving yours is admirable!

The silver "customised" Vortex have now owned for 14 yrs (and yes, one does get a few looks when sitting at traffic lites, stopped for fuel, loud comments @ 60kph with thumbs up (I guess that means it's cool) The Blue one also attracts attention moreso because they do recognise it as a Vortex. Usual comment is "Cannot remember the last time I saw one". I personally haven't seen one being driven on the road myself, but saw a few come into our workshop as we were Suby specialists & that's how I became the proud owner of the Silver car as it required head/s attention & owner couldn't be bothered (his loss, my gain!!) Such excellent work, Edster! I'm in Queensland and looked for a local Vortex before finding one in 2018. After a little coolant system/rust/paint work it was back on the road. May I ask how you refurbished the dash, considering how much brittle plastic mine has (covered by a dashmat). Plus, you showed rust spots near (I think) glass on either side - was that at the back corners? Here is a video of my Vortex XT, which looks to have been the same colour as the old vehicle you started with? kzread.info/dash/bejne/k62b1LJxc8yxiLw.html

Hello C & C. Thank you for your comments. The rust holes were at the front screen area. Your unit generally looks in far better state than mine. I'm still not quite sure to this day why I undertook such a massive project considering one is not (or has been) a bodywork specialist. Ah yes, the dash. I was fortunate here as I had "scored" two rolling chassis some time ago, that basically became my parts store & one unit had a very good dash! Have to be lucky some times eh! I also have a Silver one that has undergone "mild custom" bodywork. Quite different. Must get around to posting some pics of it. Have owned it now 14-15 yrs.

Hello Alex. As you will have noted in my video, they have a number of issues their age & where & how it has been "stored"! Is it driveable, & if so, could it be driven to your trusted mechanic (if you are not one yourself) for a good "look over". Alternatively, if there is reluctance in this dept (quite understandable) is get your mechanic to site to check over. Bearing in mind we are dealing with 30+ yr old vehicle here. Ask to view recent work performed receipts etc; etc. It all depends how keen you are to own one, & if yes, be prepared for some expenditure. I have 2 of these fine vehicles. One drives well, smooth gearing where the other has a very clunky gear change feel (box is ok, synchros good, but it's harsh in operation) Hope this is of some help.

You're so lucky ! Great job! Though, I am not so crazy about those rims. They just don't work for that car. I recommend changing them to the original XT Turbo rims (If you can find them, though I have seen them on the internet). Also, get some decals made like the original Subaru XT Turbo decals that go on the door and stick them on there. There are many print shops that will make them for cheap. Here is an idea: kzread.info/dash/bejne/m6BhwcqOZtWqk6w.html Your work will then be complete!

Hello David. Always great to hear from fellow Vorts owners, & am assuming you are in SA? To meet up at some stage would be good. I also have 4 units, but alas 2 are rolling chassis (minus engines) One is straight & original, the other experienced a front & rear & repairable if...?!? Have entered the All Japan Day at Glenelg 26th Feb (in case you are in vicinity) Regards.

Magic stuff sir. Looking forward it. There's a possibility of one, perhaps two more local Vorts there also.
