That car looks a lot like my '86 Firebird; mine had a 2.8L V-6, a 5 speed trans and the T-tops. It was royal blue on top with silver rocker panels. It had 153,000 miles on it (I bought it with 92,000) and I traded it in on a 4-door sedan a month before my daughter was born. (You just can't put a newborn baby and her mommy in the back seat of a Firebird!) The water pump blew as I drove it to the dealer; I miss that car so badly!!

It's Trans Ams like this is why I just drive my 88 GTA unrestored. Your car is beautiful. Mine, even though it's always been garaged, had the infamous GM primer issues and without the paint the metal has some rust here and there and the rest of the paint is quite faded. Fully documented, I bought it from the original owner..it has 64k miles now....blah blah blah..every car has a story. Love the color. Body looks mint. Motor sounds strong. Enjoy!!

Thank you for the comment. This is actually my brothers car. I painted it right before it went into storage. The body was perfect, no rust or dents, just needed new paint. I stripped it to metal and painted it.

Haha! Yup. This is my brothers car. He moved out of state in 1999 for a job and couldn’t take the car with him. It had already been sitting for 2 years at that point. The car has never seen snow or salt. A bit of a time capsule.

Same here. I was luck enough to buy a 1988 GTA that was stored since 1996 a few years ago. Got it for 10k and car was mint, no rust or anything. Now that I have been daily driving it for 2 years it is starting to see some rust. Best thing about the car was the in 1993, the owner who was a local racer dropped in a 500 horsepower N/A fuel injected 383 setup, 12 bolt rare with 3.73's, and a billet internal 700r4. Let's just say I'm smoking most cars except the newer muscle cars.

one of the first brand new cars I bought was a 1985 black/gold SE Bandit II edition & kept it til 1998 when I sold it with over 280,000 miles & still running! you should have put some Marvel Mystery oil in it before you started it, helps lubricate anything thats stuck internally!

Super Pursuit Mode KITT from the last season was a modified 1986 Trans Am. Second, why call him a loser over a Knight Rider reference. I own a low mileage, bone stock, 99% original museum quality 1987 Trans Am survivor today because I loved Knight Rider in 1982 when I was 13 years old. Lastly The W62 GM RPO Code you referenced is the GTO option code for the 1964 Pontiac Tempest/LeMans. Nothing to do with an ‘85 T/A.

I bet that you are having cooling problems, when I was running an electric fan on my 83 trans am, the relay quite out so the fan wouldn't turn on, causing the car to overheat and boil the carb, so when I shut the car down it would diesel and keep running for a few seconds then fully shut off. In Sept of 1979 a US government regulation went into effect that all cars sold in the US could not have speedometers that displayed speeds over 85MPH, with an emphasis on the 55MPH hash mark. This regulation was in response to the ‘70s energy crisis. The national speed limit was 55MPH at the time as well. The 85MPH speedo regulation was repealed in 1981, but many cars kept using the 85 speedo for the following several years due to the cost of redesign. Manufacturers waited until a vehicle model’s next redesign cycle to make higher reading speedos. Just because the speedo topped off at 85 doesn’t mean a car could not go any faster.
