I'd say North Korea. Like literally, they hang portraits of their leaders everywhere and in every building in the country, even in train carts, nearly 100% of North Korean citizens wear red badges of their leaders on their chests. They only have 1-2 TV channels, most programs beside the news are songs and documents about their leaders they still have a loudspeaker system that plays propaganda speeches out the streets.

Orwell was a socialist... this is not an anti communism book. It was anti-authoritarian/totalitarian. The furthest you can go with the anti-communist angle is anti-authoritarian communism (Joseph Stalin) people don’t understand that authoritarianism does not equal communism.

I know this is an old comment but I’m going to reply anyway. :) Orwell was a Democratic Socialist. He despised communism, was in favor of freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and individuality. He saw what communism does to a country, its economy, and its people, and he feared that it would exist worldwide in the near future.

He WAS a Soviet critic , however. Huxley, in Brave New World makes a realistic criticism of the totalitarianism that we currently face-fascism. If Orwell was just criticizing totalitarianism it seems he would’ve made clearer the connection to Nazism and fascism. Instead his dystopia looks much more like the Soviet Union to most readers. This. HOWEVER, doesn’t give “socialism” a pass. Marxists and Soviet communists were explicit in their hopes for the role in socialism to simply be a step toward communism. And one way they expected that would happen is through growing dependence on government over other private relationships. Pretending there’s no relationship between socialism and communism is ignorant and foolish.

Yes! The movie could have used more exposition. As I'm watching certain scenes play out on screen I could only think to myself the inner monologues winston would have that wouldve fit perfectly as narration. Like the cafeteria scene early on in the film, winston's thoughts on Parsons were written on his face, yet I only feel like I would have known that from reading the book.

This is probably the kind of movie that you can only fully understand if you have read the book it is based on. Still, it is by far the most book-faithful of the movie versions. The part I don't find satisfactory is Winston's time in the Ministry of Love, which is simply lacking in intensity. Burton as O'Brien seems slightly bored with the whole thing, especially compared to the stormy god that is the literary O'Brien.

I think by focusing more on the big visuals of the hate and getting the teleprompters they missed a big opportunity to have us connect with the main characters by focusing on their story more. The Winston/ Julia scenes were supposed to contrast the oppression with a spark of hope- without that hope, the oppression didn’t hit as hard. They could have used clips of Winston writing in his journal a lot more as a tool of the inner monologue and they also cut a lot of the bread crumbs; i.e. the “shop owner” thought police saying some cryptic things, i don’t even think O’Brien was mentioned before becoming a main character. It was super disappointing

I tried twice to watch the movie and between how disturbing it was and yet difficult to follow, I never got more than half way through it. I just completed reading the book. Hands down, book was the winner. Loved how descriptive it was and knowing Winston's thoughts definitely kept you in the loop. Still disturbing but well written. It was like Orwell had a glimpse into what we are going through today. Way too relatable, scary! Adam, I just found your channel and this was the first video I have seen of yours but I thought it was very well done and I look forward to watching more from your channel. Blessings!

  • @crimson90

I just finished watching this movie, and I think it was an abismal showing. Winston having an inner monologue would've done this movie wonders since a good portion of the exposition in the book is Winston's thoughts and perceptions. Plus, they cut out a lot of little, subtle things that while perhaps only adding maybe ten minutes of total extra runtime would have each added mountains of context and depth (and necessary story bits). For almost the entirety of the movie, all I could think was, "Without having read the book, I don't see how anyone could grasp what, how, or why anything is occurring in this movie!" The pacing was weird; it felt unnecessarily drawn out in some spots while hastily moving through the plot in others. The whole thing felt like a nostalgic slideshow whose only goal was to conjure memories of having read the book rather than actually telling a story itself. 0/10, would NEVER recommend, just read the book instead, it's short enough at about 250-ish pages.

Orwell was a socialist. The KZreadr doesn’t know anything about him, the book, or the movie outside of a bad cliffnotes synopsis which he freely gives in this simplistic breakdown. If you read the book or watch the movie and you can’t relate it to the capitalist America hellscape that we all live in then you are seriously limited.

Just watched the movie for the first time. I’ve read the book many times and agree it’s more relevant now than ever with the western world insanely clamouring for socialism. The movie does really heavily on having read the book. Not having read it in a while it was kind of like watching through a first timers eyes. Agreed there’s no explanation on how overbearing the govt is, big brother I think was mentioned once. The ministry of truth isn’t explained at all, the memory holes, how the news is constantly being edited. Winstons friend who works on the newspeak dictionary isn’t really explained. His kids kind of accuse Winston of thought crime but unless you know what that is it doesn’t mean anything. Newspeak isn’t explained. The resistance and Goldstein aren’t explained. Even the random bombs falling on Oceania aren’t explained. Proles aren’t explained. Ministry of love, where Winston is imprisoned isn’t explained. Basically everything that makes 1984 the book, so great, isn’t explained at all. Pretty disappointed with the film all around. Great comprising anyway. Subbed!

Having just watched the film last night and never having read the book I disagree that film didn't go into a lot of this. Big Brother is mentioned constantly, though they don't really go into a lot of detail on who or what Big Brother is meant to be. They show Winston editing the newspaper several times, though I was thrown a bit for a loop when they later refer to articles he's written, as all I saw him doing was censoring things. I guess my biggest complaint there was it was a bit out of context, and I wasn't always sure exactly what he was doing. I thought his friends explained newspeak pretty thoroughly nearly the beginning and throughout the film it makes more and more sense. The kids accusing him of thoughtcrime I thought was pretty self explanatory, the government brainwashing these kids into paranoids. I didn't think Goldstein needed much explanation, but I assume maybe that's a more interesting aspect of the book, but overall in the film I understood the point. The resistance never felt like a real thing in the movie, I don't know if that's the same in the book but in the movie it comes across as a ruse, false flag type deal. I did find the Proles a bit confusing. I didn't really understand how they factor into this world. The bombing I thought was a little open ended. How it came across to me immediately was it was just the result of these wars they've been talking about the entire film, or it was a staged attack to drum up more support for the war effort. I'll give you the Ministry of Love not being very well explained, I found that to be a bit confusing. I thought the film overall was pretty good though, and I liked the moment where it finally dawned on me the 'thoughtcrime' they were rooting out was love, and I like how they didn't hold my hand to that conclusion.

I read the book and then watch the movie. I could understand what was going on, but someone who hadn’t was going to have a hard time doing so. It was always going to be a difficult book to adapt without making significant changes or going heavy into exposition. The book itself is very, very exposition heavy.

I just watched the movie in order to prepare for an assessment but honestly I will say I was disappointed. They left out some major things. Such as when Julia went with Winston to O’Briens. Also didn’t help the audience and myself really feel bad nor connect with Winston at all. I believe like you said if there was some sort of narration it would have really helped! Especially hearing more of Winston’s thoughts like we read in the book. Such as how he feels about Julia, which shows the brutality of the party. Definitely also that one scene in the book where he walks past a severed human limb and just kicks it to the side. Really shows us how the party had made their people so emotionless. What really frustrates me is that they didn’t include the thought of the brother hood at all, nor Winston and Julia reciting what they had to, for the brother hood. But mostly, the end I was dissapojnted about. They forgot to include Winston being shot at the end. In the book this really stuck with me because I remember when O’Brien had mentioned to him they would shoot him. And well, they did. But other than these things I think the graphics and some imagery of the party was pretty well presented. I just wish they included a lot more elements from the book.

Of course the book is better, but I found that, with the movie, I got a bit of a better sense of the pointlessness and, shall I say, dirtiness of these people's lives. It all revolves around keeping this terrible monolith standing, even though you don't want to, and there's no hope offered in EITHER the book or movie, which is what I appreciate about them, really.

First thing I did after watching it was to look it up on Wikipedia and see what the heck half this stuff means, doesn't seem like they read the book either though. I agree with some of the comments below. This is very scary. I am a horror fan, and I find this true horror. m Monsters like zombies (clickers might come real tho from TLOU), vampires, etc., aren't real. This can become real. Maybe it already has. This is terrifying because I kinda think it's already happening. I don't really understand why either. Why can't humans just be happy and live a happy life? Why do some people want power and control over others. Just live your life and let others live.

The film had absolutely no life whatsoever, it’s as if the actors were all half asleep saying their lines. Like where Syme talks about Newspeak or where O’Brien talks about the Party’s future.

Yes, the book is better, but the film has some strengths that deserve praise. 1) Casting for the film (especially John Hurt and Suzanna Hamilton) was almost the most perfect casting to any motion picture I’ve ever seen. 2) The dark and dreary setting and atmosphere were conveyed very, very well. It was almost like watching a horror film if you can just imagine you or a loved one just having to actually living in that environment. 3) The film score (nuff said) Great video!

I was trying to spare my family the torture of reading the book. But after having to (Try and fail) to explain the depths of despair and control that the party exerts on its populace; well, I felt stupid for suggesting the viewing. Shame on the movie makers, why not more narration? Maybe not outright exposition, but an inner monologue. The diary entries were all off. It’s almost like someone really wanted to make the movie. Then they made damn sure nobody could understand it. I will be referring them to this video. because I know there’s not a chance in hell they will ever read that boring; depressing book. Not after that movie. that message is ever present and universal. A warning ⛔️ everyone should be cautious of. and Of course I will play the audiobook for them. Possibly just follow them around the house as I read aloud. Mind you; I only read this under duress(required reading). It changed me tho, like Night or The Metamorphosis. Made me 💭

I think most books are better then movie adaptations.. in general. Even if it is very good movie.. Like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest ... Movie is great but you get only like 5% of the book content. The same with Congress .. adaptation of Futurologistic congress . Or Generation P ... all good movies and I think better than this 1984 adaptation, but seems movie as a medium just provides different angle on the story. Anyway I think 1984 movie adaptation isn't bad but yeah kind of bland..

1984 sucked. There was very little diversity. No people of color in prominent roles, the LGBTQl community are totally ignored and Julia is just a sex object in Winstons sick male fantasy. It's just toxic masculinity at it's worst, with Winstons fear deemed more important than any mention of equal pay or womens rights. The book would benefit from stronger characters, maybe showing true bravery like embracing Trans people and decrying racism in all it's pervasive forms. Straight white males again... yawn. This would never be written today, or even be worth sharing on Instagram or tick tock. Shallow and lacking diversity. 1 out of 10 x.

@@ayegirl9452 completely correct but the book is still awful and outdated and shouldn’t be adverse to criticism. Winston is a fucking awful person and Orwell is obviously 100% to blame. Hesaid that when he first saw Julia he wanted to rape her and then murder her. Winston also basically called her a whore, and Julia the only female character, her only personality trait was that she would have sex with Winston she was nothing else. That’s not good writing
