@@ajgrant6172 Dallas defense TORCHED by Marino and the Marks Brothers, and the Cowboys were CRUSHED twice by the NY Giants 28-7 and 19-7 (Bill Parcells - Head Coach, Bill Belichick - Defensive Coordinator, LT and the up-and coming Big Blue Wrecking Crew Defense). Landry's Cowboys, with all the success they had over the years did not match up very well vs. the physical teams - Steelers and Raiders in the 70s, Bears, Giants and Redskins in the 1980s.

A great game between 2 legendary coaches and franchises...Cowboys missed the playoffs for the first time in like 10 years because of this loss and Miami went to the Super Bowl and lost to SF.....love the older NFL

My two favorite teams growing up. I first saw Dallas play in the Cotton Bowl, and it’s the only game I saw with my dad before he passed. And then I grew up in Florida from 12-19 years old. We usually rooted for Miami because there were NO other Florida teams at that time. But Big D will ALWAYS be my team.

As a cowboys fan this game was exciting as could be

The week prior we lost to the Redskins at home so we needed this win to go to the playoffs. Was such a frustrating game. Highs and lows with this one. "live by the blitz, die by the blitz"

This is the first MNF game that I distinctively remember watching when I was a kid. I was 9yrs old. I remember the when the Cowboys secondary wouldn't let The Fun Bunch do their celebration after a score that one game. I believe it was this season.

16:56 this play, watch the clock on the Orange Bowl score board (lower right corner of the screen) shake as Clayton nears and enters the end zone. Why is it shaking? Anyone that remembers big Canes or Dolphins games at the Orange Bowl never forgets the feeling of the metal beams holding up the seating literally shaking. Sometimes we would wonder, in the middle of pandemonium, whether the structure would collapse. But, we thought, it wouldn't matter because it's football heaven anyway. Watching this play again, 36 years later, brought tears to my eyes.

I was at this game and many other Dolphins and Hurricanes games in the O-bowl. Near the end, at least one pieces of concrete fell from the upper deck. It was literally a rockin and rollin stadium. Amenities were bad, but atmosphere for watching a game were great. My first OB game was a Monday night in 1974 vs the Bengals. I wanted to see where I was going to sit, so a few days before, walked right into the completely empty stadium and found my nosebleed seats. Try walking into any stadium today like that.

Y’all know what’s up. All these dudes that have made it to the hall of fame now have either played a LONG time or played in an era where offense has evolved so it’s making guys like my pops and duper’s number insignificant. And either way people will say it’s all Dan but we could see... they did have the same success (consistently) in the 90s or got as far as they did in the 80s

This ended up being the last Dolphins win against the Cowboys at home-until now.

I remember watching this game as a kid, thinking we needed to get to this guy. The only way possible was to blitz and he made us pay just about everytime. I forgot how exciting this game was back then. BTW, b.s call on Bill Bates. No forcible contact.

First Cowboys team not to make the playoffs since 1965. We should have won this game..and the week before it. Last 3 weeks we had to play the Redskins, Dolphins and 49ers... Talk about tough..

They were a 6.5 point underdogs / They never led in this game (Miami jumped out to a 14-0 lead) and scored on a fluke catch play to Hill to tie the score late / and Marino passed with ease down the field to take the lead 28-21 when everyone knew in the stadium Miami was only passing. Also 1984 Cowboys last 3 regular season games were at Philadelphia (6-9-1) / vs Washington (11-5) / at Miami (14-2). 1984 Cowboys didn’t play SF that season.

This was what we should have had as a Super Bowl in '84... Instead of a blow out loss.... Just a nice back n forth close game 28-21... would have been epic

As an aside, Dan's first NFL game was in '83 in the preseason in Dallas. Woodley was starting and both teams defense's were stifling the other teams offense. as I recall it was 6 - 3 Dallas with the first half coming to a close Shula put Marino in for one drive. I was a huge Dolphins fan and was really wanting to watch Marino closely to see what I thought...Woosh, Woosh, run, Woosh, Woosh, run, Woosh, TD suddenly the Dolphins offense looked unstoppable. So right out of the box it was obvious Danny was special.

Marino had the quickest release ever in history . Marino, Favre, Manning, Russell Wilson, Aaron Rodgers(imho second only to Marino in quick release passes), and the best qb you never heard of Brian Sipe of the Cleveland Browns in late 1970s early 80s , are my favorite qbs ever , they could improvise so well and win games with a spotty , sub par all around team . Tom Brady would be a nobody if he didn't have one of the greatest offensive blocking and one of the greatest teams(Pats) to play with . pocket breaks down and brady is worthless . Aaron Rodgers is one of those rare overcome adversity and being overlooked by Division 1 schools to become one of the finest quarterbacks in NFL history . In High School he started playing qb his jr and sr years . He set records . still because he was only 5'10 at the time, nobody wanted him . He went to Jr college for a year . University of California at Berkeley gave him a chance his sophomore year . the California Bears would become an elite team ranked #5 in division 1 , Rogers leading them to a 10-1 record his junior year , only loss to number 1 ranked USC 21-17 . Rodgers left after his junior year and went into the NFL draft . Being born and raised in Chico California, about 90 minutes north of San Francisco, he wanted badly to go to them. They had no 1 pick but chose quarterback Alex Smith out of Utah instead . Packers drafted him as the 24th nfl pick in the draft . 3 years sub to Favre from 2005 to 2007 . Regular starter beginning 2008 and the rest is a great history for Rodgers .

A bad omen for the Cowboys this season was being swept by the Giants, 28-7 and 19-7 at home, their first time being swept by a division opponent since St. Louis did it in 1970. Sitting at a decent 7-5 after 12 weeks, Dallas easily beat St. Louis and Philly, but imploded against lost heartbreakers to Washington and Miami here.

Shula's Dolphins lost SB VI to Dallas, then beat them 6 of 7 times to take a 6-2 lead in their series. It evened out thereafter.

If the Cowboys win this game they are in the playoffs. They blew it. By 1986 it was all over for Tom Landry.

How did Dallas blow this game? They never led. Miami was a 6.5 point favorite / had leads of 14-0 and 21-14 / Dallas tied the game late at 21-21 on a fluke catch by Hill / Miami (14-2) was playing to secure the #1 seed in the AFC / Dallas (9-7) was playing to secure the last playoff spot in the NFC.

ABC literally shows a graphic at the top of the telecast that says if Dolphins lose this game to Dallas then Denver gets home field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs. The Dolphins had to win this game. If they didn’t, Marino wouldn’t have played.

@@drbonesshow1 - Yep simple minded is what you are. Claiming the win is more important to Dallas than Miami. Miami actually had Super Bowl title aspirations with the a new QB that shredded NFL defenses and Dallas was struggling just to qualify for the playoffs with an aging roster past it’s prime where every playoff game would’ve been on the road. Are you really this out of it?

On Clayton's winning TD, did Dallas have the wrong D or was it a horribly blown coverage? Clayton could have driven a truck through that opening.

This is the difference between passing the ball and throwing the ball Marino was throwing darts no way these weak ass arm quarterbacks of today like Matt Ryan or Brady could make these throws . It's a shame you got mediocre quarterback like Matt Ryan putting up crazy numbers because of the rules of today's NFL he would have been a backup in Marino day. Marino played today under these rules you be looking at 65 tds probably 6500 passing yards.

The rules Marino played under were more open than the rules Joe Namath played under...So what's your point, the fact is the NFL has been changing the rules for decades & every generation of football fans can say about an earlier era that their particular era was better/worse it's all a matter of perspective. This notion that Tom Brady & Peyton Manning couldn't make it if they played in the '70s & '80s is total complete HOGWASH!!! I am as aggravated as anyone that falling on a Quarterback nets a 15 yd personal foul, I think the league is getting ridiculous with these over-exaggerated so-called rules of protection of quarterbacks [which they've been doing as far back as the famous In the Grasp rule of the Marino Era] Common sense rules should be accompanied by common sense rule enforcement.

@@BIG-D-STAR Under the same rules for each era Marino is by far the best. The only person remotely close to him in the 80s was Fouts. In the current era there are several QBs on par with Brady and Manning. Same with the era before Marino; several QBs put up similar numbers. Marino had no peers.

In the 1990s Marino didn't have as good an overall team as he had in the Miami Dolphins in the 1980s

Meh. The only good teams he had in the 80s were 83, 84 and 85.

15:10 every football players dream. but hill was playing with fire running so close to the sideline . nobody near him and you think he would have took a couple strides away from the sideline towards center of the field . could have easily stepped out of bounds .
